Well. First needs to mention, that I from Europe, but I'm going to participate a Work & Travel program. I will spend 3 months in California, so the chances for a better price is higher than here. I've experience with various of cameras, lenses(from Pentax to Canon, form rebel to 1d mk IV) but being in a budget I'm waiting for some ideas. My expectations is a good IQ system with lowlight, using for portraits, landscapes and events. I'm also interested in video side, shooting some shorts(even mf lenses, audio recording).
Any advice, experience is welcomed.
Ps:Sorry for my english.

Quite frankly I don't think it will make any sense to buy gear in the U.S. and then bring it back to Europe with cash-back and customs all calculated in, because prices in the states are not so much better. Just compare online shop prices and calculate for total costs. I say it won't look pretty. Depending on where you are living, you may be better of buying in another country in Europe.

If your really tight on a budget. Here's the options

5Dc, MK2 or MK3

28 1.8 or 24mmL II or 24-70

50mm 1.8 or 50mm 1.4 or 50mm 1.2

100mm f2 or 135mmL f/2 or 70-200 2.8L IS II

430EX II or 580EX II or 600 RT flash.

Done. Couple of memory cards and other stuff but that's pretty much it.

What about putting the new forty shorty (40mm pancake) instead of a 50mm? Cheaper than the 50 f/1.4, although obviously quite a bit slower of a lens. Much smaller and lighter though, and somewhat cheaper.

Because if he decideds to get a 2.8 zoom, it covers that already. Plus the 50mm Prime is still about speed and you'll need sub-f/2.8 for alot of situations.

That makes a lot of sense. In my humble opinion you should purchase at least one lens much faster than f2.8 at a useful focal length such as 50mm. This gives you a lot of options for narrow depth of field or low light situations you would otherwise miss completely.
