Sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, I'm not sure what help we can offer. We can commiserate or sympathize, but I would not call those helpful.
If you have insurance on your gear, you may want to consider if it's worth filing a claim. If it's a business policy, possibly worth it. If it's on a homeowners/renters policy (a rider, supplemental 'inland marine' policy, etc.), it's probably not worth it because of the deductible and the effect claims have on insurability.
Else, the repair will cost what Canon charges. Your only alternative is a used copy of the lens, for example they're $1100-1200 at MPB for excellent copies. But yours will come back from Canon like new and for less money.
I had the 70-200/2.8 II, it's an excellent lens. I did drop mine once, ironically was after i decided to sell it – it fell off a table when I was taking pictures of it. The fall cracked the focus distance window (with implications for weather resistance), but otherwise the lens functioned perfectly. I knocked $100 off the price and listed it with full disclosure and a pic of the damage in the listing. It sold fast.
