L plates with an intervalometer

I'm new to tripods/panoramas, all that good stuff. So forgive the basic question: when I'm using an L plate in order to shoot in the portrait position, how can I plug in a wired intervalometer? I'm essentially covering the spot where I would plug it in. The only option I immediately see is sort of half clamping the camera into the ball head so that the bottom half isn't covered, leaving that spot revealed. But that doesn't seem very stable. I guess this would be relevant if I were shooting a panorama in low light or for whatever reason using a longer exposure, where a cable release would be useful.
