Much Ado About Nothing at NAB 2014 From Canon

<p><a href="http://www.canonrumors.com/2014/03/canons-plans-for-nab-2014-next-month-cr1/" target="_blank">Recent reports about Canon releasing two camera bodies for NAB 2014</a> in Las Vegas next month look like they were recycled rumors from a long while back.</p>
<p>We’re told by various folks that Canon will make some announcements of non camera items that won’t be a big deal to most people. It looks like a quiet NAB from Canon for the second year in a row.</p>
<p>Again, that means no Cinema EOS camera and no DSLR style video camera. The firmware update for the EOS-1D C is still on the table, and I expect to see a cinema lens or two.</p>

Canon seems to be asleep at the wheel. The advantages of the DSLR are starting to become liabilities, especially for those of us who shoot mixed stills/video or documentary style video. Sony is making huge strides in the mirrorless market, especially with their a7R full frame camera, and the DSCRX10 point and shoot. I've been shooting Canon for 25 years, but if I were to buy a camera today, I'd choose the Sonys over their Cannon counterparts.

Sounds like someone got told to keep their mouth shut for one more day until Canon could get an announcement out there.

I was really expecting them to update the c300, or show up with a cheaper C-model DSLR.

You're probably right. The c300 was released in November so it'll be 3 full years this fall.

I wasn't bothered about NAB or any video announcements but this is getting beyond a joke. Almost April now and nothing but rumors of nothing this year. And when it does finally come we all know deep down it will probably be a powershot or rebel!

What do you mean? Where I am in Asia it is free, but they do make checks to ensure you are a pro working photographer.

There's a free level (Silver) in the USA, too - and it's worth just about what you pay for it (you get an ID card and you can call the CPS hotline, woot). The paid levels (Gold, $100;,Platinum, $300; Cinema, $1K) get you repair discounts (20-30%), faster repair turnaround (3 or 2 days), free shipping on repairs (one or both ways), loaners during repair, and free equipment evaluation loans. To get CPS support for Cinema products, you need that membership level.

Canon USA doesn't seem to care if you're a pro photographer (their terms state you must be, but they don't verify anything). They care that you own a sufficient amount of gear to qualify (eligible gear has point values, you need more points for higher levels), and that you pay the fee.

Oh yes. I'm bitterly disappointed that Canon hasn't released the T6i and SL2 that I've so eagerly been awaiting... A few >$20K Cinema EOS lenses and some consumer lenses refreshed with STM to round out 'The Year of the Lens' and I'll be a happy camper.

what if canon announces all the new stuff at photokina, at once?

nah.... i hope that won´t be the case.

but one thing is sure, canon has "lost" some of my money in the past 18 month.
nothing new from canon that interested me meant the money burning a hole in my pocket was spend on third party stuff.

they could have sold me a new 100-400mm, 35mm L, 50mm and a 12-24mm easily.
now at least a new 100-400mm and 35mm L i will not buy so soon i guess.

and the new 50mm from sigma, if it delivers the performance promised, makes it unlikely i will buy a new canon 50mm.

You mean the T5, G2 X, and new macro ring flash weren't enough to get you excited??? It made my year .

I hereby re-name this the "Year of the LONG Wait Until Photokina" and it better be worth it!

I'm a fairly 'long-time' Canon guy...started shooting with a new Ellan II in the 90's. I have bought numerous Canons: Ellan II, 20D, 5D, 1DSII, 5D2 plus numerous P&S's. I still have my 5D2 as the 5D3 wasn't enough of an upgrade for me to spend the money. The last two years I have also been shooting an XPro1 with the 35mm, 23mm and some Leica glass.

The sad truth is I find myself shooting less and less with my 5D2. I wish Canon would come out with something new and groundbreaking to make me excited about the brand again. Even their foray into mirrorless was a joke; coming out with the 'M' when they had the opportunity to produce something exciting along the lines of Fuji and/or Sony A7R.

Have you tried the 5DIII? I was in the same camp as you in thinking that it wasn't a big upgrade - but then I used one. It's a totally different camera and is better in nearly every way. I agree that they have been playing it pretty safe, though, and if the Fuji suits you well, then Canon's probably made you pretty unhappy as they haven't catered to the street shooter/traveler market in quite a while.

I forgot to mention I already owned the 7D too Anyway, the one thing that DID appeal to me about the 5D3 is the user interface is much like the 7D which I actually really loved. I only sold the 7D as I was never really happy with the image quality. Anyway, I know the 5D3 is a great camera but as I said I just couldn't justify the money for a better user interface and improved AF.

In addition to street shooting (hence the Fuji) I enjoy landscape photography so I am hoping Canon will eventually release a counter to the D800E....and with an improved UWA option.

I guess that's what I'm getting at - the 5DIII is much better in many other ways as well - the built in level, silent shutter, better build quality are very nice, but the shadows are so much better, ISO 3200 if very useable, and the AF blows away the 5DII if you're shooting anything that moves. I'm not trying to sell you one but I think you'd be surprised by the level and number of improvements if you shot with one for several days. I had a 7D, too, and sold it not long after buying the 5DIII - the crop factor wasn't enough reason for me to keep it. I was never happy with the 7D at ISO 1600 or above.

Yay more disappointment from Canon. Maybe I should lower my expectations that Canon doesn't release anything that appeals to me so I won't be disappointed.
