This isn't an L lens but it does a good job and on this camera makes for a small package. These were shot with a Canon RP, low light, high ISO and puppies that wouldn't stay still.

IMO this lens has deserved more attention because it is ...
  • lightweight and compact
  • has f/1.8 for some separation with good bokeh (= non-disturbing, organic)
  • has f/1.8 + 5-stop IS for low light
  • has @f/1.8 very good center IQ and good corner IQ +
has @f/4.0 excellent IQ over all of the frame (contrast, color & texture fidelity)
  • has 1:2 macro / closeup functionality which is unique (AFAIK) and very attractive for me who
disliked the "clonk" while trying to get close enough from my FD lens days
  • has the unique combination of all mentioned features as a GOOD compromise
  • is well suited for video (except the often-mentioned noise of its STM drive but an external
    microphone helps.
One downside is the heavy vignetting wide open but in most situations I like it because it draws attention to the main subject.

Some images below, the corresponding f-stop is given in the file names:

(the upper left dark corner is NO vignetting, it's the edge of the background)

The RF 35mm f1.8 is a wonderful lens. When I was all EF, I used the 40mm STM lens as a walk around/travel lens and appreciated it as well.

This one gives another welcome 5mm of coverage, a stop+ of light and all that stabilization. Bigger, but ideally suited for an R5.

Photo was made at 1/40 f2.8 handheld. No crop. R5B_2465.jpg
