Show your Bird Portraits

The male Crowned Woodnymph often appears to be all dark, but when the light hits it just right the brilliant emerald and violet plumage is stunning. I photographed this individual while birding at La Florida, Bosque de Las Aves, at km 18, Colombia, November, 2025.

Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the photos. The Hummingbirds are probably my favorite avian family (and among the most difficult to photograph well).
Yes, hummers are a challenge to capture well. I have settled on the RF 200-800mm on an R7 as my best choice of gear. Faster glass is not helpful because as I am sure you have found, anything faster than f/8 puts half the bird out of focus if you are close enough to get decent magnification. I suspect your work is more challenging in that you are clearly photographing fully in the wild, whereas my backyard birds are pretty tame.

While @foda and @ISv are getting their spectacular close-ups of rare colourful birds, what do I get. Well, a rare scarce winter visitor Red-necked Grebe in non-breeding plumage was reported a short drive away. At 80-100m from the shore, it needed to be pointed out to me and I got one shot in focus of the dull bird in grey light of less than 400 px width at 800mm with the R5ii. Oh well, some shots are just for the record and for the twitchers they just need only to give it a tick.

When in Bulgaria (2023) I tried to find it on a spot that it should breed (it's relatively rare species there but breeds on many localized spots). Didn't see it and I have never seen it! In England it should be by far more rare bird - I mean you are lucky to see it at all!

This afternoon I tried to find again the Orange-cheeked Waxbill. Looking at a group of ~60-70 birds didn't see it. Instead I found a partially leucistic Common Waxbill (first time I see such a Common Waxbill). Took bunch of photos and seat to see what I have done. Suddenly on several photos I saw blurred orange cheek! Went back and this time I spotted it! Same place as the previously posted photos, just 50-60 meters apart.

I haven't seen the Little Owl since February 2024 but he was back on a woodpile this afternoon. He's in the middle of a fenced farmer's field and the closest I get is about 80-100mm. The 1.4xTC on the RF 200-800mm is very useful at this distance and the image is pretty sharp for hand held and the owl only 570 pixels tall.

Several times I have seen "Mynas wars"- in the local slang (I would say "Mynas brawls"!) but always distant or I was not prepared. There is no way to be "prepared": the event stops as suddenly as it starts. I think they have some negative energy that they need to get out!
I was sitting on a bench checking out my photos of flowers (botanical garden) when it started right (and close!!!) in front of me. The only time that I had was to close the aperture for DOF and started shooting at "group AF". The losers are pretending "dead", but wen the dust gets down they are walking together with the winners like nothing happened :ROFLMAO:! Everything in 5-10 seconds.
Sorry for the blurred photos but the light was not enough and changing with the movement of the canopy above... On other hand you are getting sense of the dynamic of the event?
