Show your Bird Portraits

Out today with the RF 800/11 on the R5 as birds were likely to be very distant. A Little Owl at over 60m away, a male Stonechat at about 25 and a female Stonechat relatively close at about 14m. I'd be interested in doing the same with the 200-800 but I find it difficult to keep these small targets in the centre of the frame without a mono or tripod.

I suggest you lookup "Bird vision" on Wikipedia. Most birds see the world in four colors, red, green, blue, and ultraviolet (RGBUV). Humans/primates and old-world monkeys share the RGB color system. Most other mammals only see two colors (hint no red). So, if the head reflects an equal amount of red and UV then birds may see "ultra-purple" as a distinct color like we see red and blue as purple. We only see the head as red. How cool is that?
Thanks for pointing that out. Odd thing in that interesting article. It claimed that having the lens closer to the back of the eye gave better night vision. But, that’s half of the f-number equation.

Being as you are in the neighborhood, just jog over to Hogwarts and see if Hermione can stir you a batch of "elixir of youth". Then you should be able to hold that 200-800 as steady as a rock. ;)

You missed the point. Birds are direct descendants of one family of dinosaurs. Go back to the beginning of the thread and read the article. ;)
I didn't miss the point. In your words "descendants" should be replaced with "evolved from one family of dinosaurs". "Descendants" is also correct but is not including the process and what it means for the final product!

You most likely know them as birds, but they'll always be dinosaurs to me!
:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:!
First question: have you ever seen/interact with dino?
The second: do you think you are monkey (well, well - I know, we all behave sometimes as a monkey since we are descendants :D! but there are more significant differences than just the behavior! That behavior for some people comes only occasionally for others on little bit more regular basis).
Just a sample: show me evidence for a single monkey taking photos of birds, with camera produced by monkeys and I will rise the white flag:p:ROFLMAO::p:LOL::ROFLMAO:!

Alan, I am happy for you. I can see that you can use the sunny weather for birding. :cool:
As Christmas holidays with disgusting weather are over for me, and seeing the sunny weather outside I'd somehow close to bite my... :censored:
And the forecast for the weekend is bad again :(
So please keep posting that at least I can enjoy your photos

Thanks Maximilian. It was bright and sunny but below zero. I was really pleased to see the Stonechats as there are so few birds around.

The close-up birds are easy and the eyeAF/subject AF works. However, a Little Owl at 60m fits in just a focus square, the eyeAF doesn't work, and when you wander off it the lens focuses on the distractions. I've been shooting hand held with long lenses for more than a decade. It's dead easy to focus with the RF 100-400 on the R7 as it is so light.

Lighten up a little. That was humo(u)r.:giggle: Seriously, the 100-400 is easy to focus with because it is light, but also because it is only 400mm. Slap a 2x TC on it and it won't be as easy. I find a little extra mass (not too much) helps with stability. The 200-800 feels about right for me, whereas holding the 11 lb EF 800 f/5.6 L is not in the cards.
