It's amazing to see a successful predator. I do feel bad for they prey, but it's nature and I don't want to starve

If you keep going out, you can eventually get lucky.

Still better than me: the biggest predator with a prey in my collection is a Heron (several of them) with a fish (in one occasion it was with a House Sparrow)!

I'm for #2: look at that guy with a tilted cap and flamboyant pose! And when I imagine the size of the bird I hardly can't smile ). Personally for me the busy background is just the habitat where they are living and hardly can destroy the photo!

I love herons but haven't been lucky to catch them catching or eating fish.
I did get a hawk with a duck, but it was so fast in the shade that I didn't get my iso up in time. So, it's not good quality, and I'm not certain where it is anymore (two computers and two main cameras ago...)

I agree that a background and foreground does not have to be a bad thing. Does it give it a different style? Yes, definitely, but not necessarily bad. I doubt most people who aren't photographers or collectors will really notice much.

Usually larger hawks (Red-tailed, Red-shouldered) and Owls carry their prey into trees or on top of power poles which make photography challenging. Here I got lucky because at least this juvenile Cooper could only fly about 2m high and 10m away with the cottontail in tow. Unfortunately, it had to contend with hikers, so I kept finding it in various locations and poses as I doubled back from other trails.
