They formally updated the weight on the web page, btw. It's been AWOL since it was listed the very first announcement day and then it was unceremoniously yanked.

But it's official: 815 g / 28.7 oz

But IMHO aceptable for this optical design (13 elements / 8 groups / 77 mm filter thread).

Even the old 50 mm 1.4 DG HSM was at 505g / 17.8oz. Unbelievable the new one would be lighter.

If more reviews come out like SLR Gear's, will Canon and Nikon step up their game or will they just admit defeat? Sigma is making it really difficult it even consider a 35mm or 50mm from another manufacturer.

949 is definitely in my buy it now price range... but I'll wait. I at least will wait until a 2nd generation just in case the first batch has something stupid going on with it... like the 5d mkiii with their light leak issue.

Good price vs performance ... will wait till the hype settles a bit to see if it really lives up to its hype ... the Sony a6000 also had great hype built up to it, but so far the results aren't as promising.

I checked also Dpreview again. They changed the wrong number of weight from 400-plus gram to 815g. They noticed their mistake

They were smart. They knew they needed to keep it under the psychological $1000 threshold, so it seems like a bargain and it is clearly less than the OEM. But OTOH, they had a ton of built-up demand so they wanted to get close to $1000. Brilliantly done.

I jumped in line as well earlier this morning, but I'm still not sure I'll keep the pre-order or keep the lens once I get it. While the 50L has some issues, I still love the lens and don't know if this lens will be a big improvement for my uses of the 50 prime. I took another look at the imaging resource samples last night and while the bokeh looks nice, especially compared to many of the previous Sigmas, it's not as smooth as the 50 & 85L. Now that's being pretty picky and looking at it at 100% magnification, so I'm not sure that's relevant for prints, but the bokeh is one of the main reasons I love the 50L.

Edit: just found these samples on CNet and this one shows some LoCA. Definitely not APO like Otus, but still not horrendous.
