The Canon EOS R1 will come well before the EOS R5 Mark II [CR3]

I agree. If history is any prediction of the future the R1 will be a pro sport photography camera just like all 1 series cameras before it. With that said, I expect some surprises from Canon. The R3 might be a one off camera like the EOS 3 before it.
Once we have specifications on the R1 we should know more wrt to the R3s future....
Always fun to speculate and conjecture!

Or maybe the R3-2 will be an R1 but in a much smaller body, without the grip. The R5-2 becomes the high resolution body.

Frankly, no on has any specific info which is good. It is somewhat humorous that I have been reading some post of the Nikon Z9/Z8. Users are pointing out the significantly worse high ISO performance relative to a Nikon D6 and people are wishing the Z9/Z8 had fewer MP. High native resolution or high ISO performance pick one! Yes one can downsample to remove noise, but then why shoot at high resolution in the first place.
Case in point: You cannot please everyone. Frankly, I hope Canon makes the R1 a modest increase in resolution with a resolution in the low 30s. Maybe the best of both world's.

I strongly suspect that a formfactor change will also mean a name change. So that gripless R3II would be an R4.
Not sure how that would be positioned against the R6 series, would people pay €2000 more for gaining CFe, a bigger buffer, nicer EVF and faster readout?

Canon could radically change the form factor, possibly include an EVF attachment to be used with the multi-functiion hot-shoe, this could free up internal body space at the top of the camera for dual-sensor type configuration (think a rectangular cartridge for IBIS purposes that retracts when the camera is powered off, then user can select Sensor A or B). The power zoom attachment is 1000 more on the new RF 28-105 f2.8, so Canon could offer more than one type of attachable EVF, perhaps one that can angle into a vertical position. They could sell these obviously for a price, and charge more for the 9 million dot 240 Hz blackout free ones!
The patent for the selectable internal ND may be intended for a selectable sensor. This could be what Canon means when they say "Master of everything".

I think Sony is doing the right thing by having the a1 and a9 be separate lines.
I just think Sony is doing a poor job of distinguishing when the a1 is the better choice.
Maybe they are afraid of folks opting for the Z 8 since all of their Sony lenses can be adapted.

I do not think an R4 would be a bad idea.
I am sure some folks would prefer that it be an R6 III but that would mean the R6 III could not share with the R8 II.
It would also make sense to just let the R8 price drop instead of having an R8 II so soon.

Except that 4 has bad connotations in both Japanese and Chinese languages, so it is unlikely they want to call it "4".
In China, four (四 - pronounced sì) has the same pronounciation as death (死), so many avoid that. I've seen highrise buildings without all floor numbers that would have a '4' in it. Same with hotel room numbers.
In Japanese, the characters are the same and they have the same pronunciation: Shi.

I can only confirm. During my active years, I got many gifts from Japanese customers. Never 4 pieces, never.

And yet, the EOS 5 D IV...perhaps it was named differently for the Japanese and Chinese markets?

I also remember our "Intercultural Training" during which we were warned, never to hand out 4 similar business gifts to Japanese or Chinese collegues and customers.
