Thinking about springing for a 70-300L IS

My quick addition.

I own the 70-300mm L - bought it very soon after it became available. It is a great travel lens, so versatile in the range it covers (especially on a APS-C DSLR... it gets me equivalent of 480mm). And with very high quality!

Together with my Canon 15-85mm, I am covered for most situations - in a 2 lens 7D travel package. At times, I even go with my UWA (Sigma 8-16mm) for dramatic landscapes, etc - and the 70-300mm L to cover a very different perspective.

While I often am 'focal length limited' - I don't want to spend several thousands on a larger tele lens. My 70-300mm L gets me 95% of what I want for my tele needs.

I love that I can have it (either on camera, or in the spare slot) in my Lowepro shoulder bag, with a 2nd lens... works so well that way. The awesome AF and IS really add to the convenience.

Let me explain. No, there is too much – let me sum up. The 70-300L is a great lens, my go-to telezoom for travel and daylight outings (for indoors I grab the 70-200/2.8 II).

The only downside is the reversed position of the focus and zoom rings compared to other L zooms, but you get used to it.

I will be picking up a tripod collar for this ('C' knockoff) Since I already have a RRS L84A plate, will that work? I believe it's similar to the recommended P20.

I have the OEM collar with the RRS L84 plate (is there an L84A?). One thing I like is that with the collar/plate, when I support the lens by it my fingers are positioned right at the zoom ring.

I agree. I use the collar on the 70-200 and 100-400 this same way and I've considered getting the 70-300 collar. It peeves me that they don't include the collar since it's included with about every other 'great white' L zoom lens in the Canon line.

Well, I have it and I love it. So far no discernible need to AFMA the lens and I love all the features. The hood is top notch as well with no pesky lock button and yet it's close to the barrel and secure. Tomorrow I'll test it out with the CPL. In a couple weeks I'll take it to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, woohoo.
