It's actually logical and scientifically sound that a battery can warm itself up by doing work and becoming more efficient. A petrol (gas) or diesel engine is very inefficient when cold and does very few miles per filling of a tank but it heats itself up and becomes more efficient so a tankfull lasts much longer.

The work of warming the engine (or battery) up does consume some of the gasoline (or electrochemical energy) so there is some reduction in the useful capacity of the fuel tank or battery, even if the very first thing it does is heat itself to optimal operating temperature.

It is, of course, more energy efficient to be running at warmer ambient temperatures. If it is below suboptimal temperatures outside, there is work of warming the engine but it is small compared with the gain in efficiency in working at the higher optimal working temperature.
Lithium batteries were first made commercially by Sony, which might offend some Canonistas.
