Why I’m Buying The R5C Instead Of The C50 (Or R6 Mark III)

You mentioned the "portability" of the C50 and how it's better for gimbal use, but then forget that the top handle has to mount on it to get XLR inputs and now it's not as easily mounted on a gimbal. I agree with you though that the R5C is still the best hybrid out there. The C50 could have come close if it would trigger a flash.

R5C... a camera with mediocre IQ, c-log3 and a pack of dozen batteries to get the day.... and then you see this title?? Ok I'm keep telling to myself that is good to exist different opinions... BUT this?!?!?
I’ll agree with the lack of full-size HDMI being annoying, as well as CLOG2 - but mediocre IQ? Seriously? Have you even used this camera? I’m tired of people complaining about the R5C. If you don’t like it, use something different. Don’t go around spreading misinformation based wholly on ignorance.

The R5C is not a great handheld run n’ gun camera without IBIS, nor a highly sensitive low light camera. So, if you’re judging “mediocre IQ” by running around shooting video at iso 10,000 in the dark, I can see how you might reach that assessment. The R5C is one of very few medium sized ILC cameras on the market that shoots 8k60 raw internal. It also shoots 4k60p oversampled from 8k. Video quality is absolutely fantastic for this class of camera in good light situations. It also has an internal fan, and does not overheat. What exactly are you comparing it to?

The FX3 is a great camera for low light and run n gun, but falls short of the R5c in many other areas. It is not oversampled, does not shoot above 4k, and has similar battery life. R5c record time is about 90 minutes in 4k24p on new LP-E6P battery. Higher video resolutions and framerates get less record time. Stills photography mode lasts forever on any battery.

R5C is not for everyone, but it is one hell of a great deal for the right person- you’re basically buying a compact 8k 60p raw cinema camera with a free Canon R5 stills camera thrown in. You can power it for video all day with a couple small usb-c battery banks. Who shoots on an 8k cinema camera without external V-mount power anyway? Not to mention weather sealing. I’ve shot with R5c in pouring rain.

The R5 C is great. Had it since release. Is it perfect, no. No camera ever is, but I'd take it over the C50. I've had my camera out in serious weather too. Blistering rain in Norway and Germany during winter. Never fails to amaze me. Runs for hours on USB-C PD and all day with a V-Mount. The C50 is nice but I was underwhelmed in some repects. We all use our cameras differently, so buy what works.

I strongly agree as someone who is just doing photo and video for delight with some bigger plans behind ;-)
→ Streamlined ergonomics is very important to be ready instantly and avoid errors.
Mixing R50V with R7 is ... challenging.
→ I missed the viewfinder in the R50V so often e.g. in the bright sun or complicated light and the third stabilisation point with telephoto lenses.
→ The boxy form factor is great on a gimbal
In the end I am happy with my tiny R50V because it produces great image quality and has the S&F mode but I would pay 150 € for an S&F capable firmware update for my R7 and R6 ii .
And I like the remark about the R50C handle: If you need perfect audio with HQ mics XLR with phantom power is mandatory and this handle - well mounted - is so much cleaner than audio devices with antlers for the mics. I settled with lower audio quality with the Zoom M3 M/S mic as a compromise - which also sports an internal recorder: Canon sadly offers no audio recording in camera during time lapse/slomo.

From everything I have seen, the battery life on the R5 C and C50 is about the same with LP-E6P batteries,
The C50 only lasts a few minutes longer.
The biggest problem with the R5 C is that it ships with the wrong battery.

Can time lapse have original sound even in principle? It's just a series of still images stitched together as a video. (High fps/slo mo is another matter).
The final product is a movie so recording some wav file and feeding this into the movie file cannot be a problem. wav files are small compared to video and are no burden to the camera. I would prefer a movie file AND the wav file over the whole period to have more options later.
Finally I use the Zoom M3 microphone with built-in recorder and add the track afterwards leaving room for some tweeks to the sound file.

My point is, how does audio for time lapse make sense conceptually? Do you capture audio for the duration of each still, then squish them into 1/30 sec or whatever the final frame rate is? Most time lapse that I have seen is either silent or has music/narration added afterwards.

If you have a forest or a street it would be fine to put the atmo in real time under the images. So just using a part of the audio ... that is my intention. And this is easier to do if you have only one system which stores both and gives the data filenames showing that they are connected.

Yepppppp. Well said. Pretty much everything you mentioned is why I'm not upgrading my R5C. The R6markiii even though it's kind of a "downgrade" from an R5 series body on paper looks like an upgrade for so many reasons, the open gate alone almost had me but I think people who think they need that or a C50 are the same people hung up on specs, hdmi sizes and dynamic range in a very unhealthy way. I care more about a camera that doesn't slow me down in the field and sometimes having an EVF and shutter angle is all I need to get the shot quick. 6 seconds between photo/video, no Clog 2 but with the new LP-E6P's, the R5C is still the GOAT.
