What will Henry's do?
It appears Henry's will NOT be honoring the previous price of the 5D Mark II, this is completey understandable. What Henry's will be doing is giving out a free 8gb Ultra II CF card to people with preorders. Henry's is contacting their customers at the moment with the news.

Thanks for the heads up.

  1. Everyone who preordered could form a group and file a class action law suit against canon, given the number of people, the chances are good that they will win.
Personally, I won’t buy it at the jacked up price, I’ll wait until it goes back down and I suggest others do likewise if they want to see a fast price decrease.
Canon would rather get lower profit than no profit at all.

  2. Called Henry’s, (didn’t get an email), and they confirmed the price hike, but didn’t confirm the 8gb card offer.

  3. The fact that they called it “pre-order” was really a joke. So they can increase the price for whatever reason. That was just a pure “reservation”.

  4. I don’t personally agree that Henry’s price increase is ‘completely understandable’ and this falls into a general category that I always like to label ‘Canadian small thinking’.

I used to travel internationally quite a bit and it dawned on me as I was ‘outside looking in’ that Canadian businesses excelled at a number of things but the one they were best at was setting up a process and telling people what you ‘can’t do’. In this case it is ‘you can’t have this price if we or Canon revises the price upward’.

I don’t know how much Henry’s makes on each sale but it has to be tidy – so let’s say they actually lose $50/camera – times 80 ( was that the waiting list number?) that is 4k$ – is that worth jerking around 80 people and the resulting fallout – of course not.

You simply grit your teeth and publicize the fact that you hold the customer relationship as the number one factor in your business and you are going to hold the line in the face of a price increase and gain customers from that very practice.

I will buy a 5D MkII – it won’t be from Henry’s and it won’t be at the new price.

I’ll pick and choose the price and I’ll choose the dealer based on a set of principles that Henry’s simply refuses to live up to.

I like the concept of the site – just stumbled across it today – keep up the good work.

  5. I “pre-ordered” several weeks ago at Henry’s and had to put a 25% deposit ($750) down. I got in at the $2799 price because I knew a price increase was looming due to the falling Canadian dollar. When I pre-ordered, I confirmed with the salesperson that this was the price I was going to pay.

I read the news from this site yesterday and went up to Henry’s today. I was told that they were not honouring the pre-order price of $2799. They didn’t even mention the CF card; and I didn’t ask about it since it would have made a difference. I got my $750 deposit back.

I am not too disappointed since I am heading over to work for several months in Taiwan starting next month. Shipments to Taiwan will likely be at the end of this month as well. I was looking at possibly being on the waiting list until early next year before I was able to get one here; or at least that is what I was told at Henry’s. I should be able to pick one up in Taiwan for cheaper (at least saving on tax) and, likely, sooner.
