From a regular (50 f/1.4)
I’m told for certain that a new 50 f/1.4 is coming this summer from Canon.
It will retail in the $699 USD range.
New Lens
The same source says there will be one new lens from Canon this summer/fall that is not a replacement of anything current. He didn’t have specs at the present time.
Teleconverters
There are new teleconverters being tested at the World Cup I’m told. No word on a release timeframe.

In the $699 USD range for a 50mm f1.4?!?! Geez.
Well if the 50 f/1.4 is replaced I sure hope it’s actual price at retailers falls close to the $345 the current lens is commanding…
Gotta love how Canon competes with Nikon 1 to 1.
Then again… I’m wondering what’s taking them so long in the 14mm end.
Don’t expect so… Even Sigma can ask a nice premium for their 1.4, and unless Canon really screws this one up, they’ll simply go over that. What’s the alternative? 1.2L? 1.8? I think this one will drop to $500-ish, but they’ll start high, and slowly reduce prices if sales are below expectations.
Any additional info on the teleconvertes/extenders? Are they testing upgrades to the 1.4x and 2x or something new? Inquiring minds want to know! :)
You’re assuming that this it will be a ‘consumer’ grade. What if it is going to be an ‘L’ grade lens? Canon haven’t introduced a non-‘L’ EF lens for years -the last was the 100mm macro? This has now been replaced (if the recent rumour is true) with an ‘L’.
Maybe its a 501.4 but L serie build
…and the other lens will be a Canon EF 135mm f1.8 L…
Surely they must be testing more than just Teleconverters at the world cup.
Well in that case the next question you should be wondering about is whether you’d want to use anything over a 2x or bother with something less than 1.4x. That way the only “new” (and sensible) TC could be a 1.7x :)
EF-S 15-70mm f/4 IS USM as an alternative to the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM for &D shooters.
The 7D shows Canon’s commitment to the 1.6 crop and they will bring out excellent glass to match the 7D, the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM was only the begining.
A completely new lens from Canon. Would it be too much to ask for Canon to make a 200-400 f/4 or even a 200-500 f/2.8-4??
Or what is taking them so long with the AF system of the D700, the ISO / FF performance of the D3s…
The current MSRP for the 50mm, from Canon, is ~389.00 USD. The Amazon.com price is ~350.00.
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=152&modelid=7307
If the MSRP is 699 USD, there is a good chance it will at or near 699.
$699 seems a little high for the 50 1.4, but I want a good 50mm. The f1.2 is too expensive, and the sigma has focus shift problems when stopping down (apparently due to residual spherical aberrations), which will cause problems from f2.0 to f5.6, maybe more.
The excellent Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G is $484.95. Sure hope that Canon can match it.
Compare to the Sigma lens which dominates the current Canon 50mm. Corner to corner sharpness.
Compare to the Sigma lens which dominates the current Canon 50mm. Corner to corner sharpness.
I think it will be an L lens with similar design tolerances seen in the 100L macro. Mostly high grade plastics, light, scratch resistant hood, and L ring.
I’d pay $700 no sweat if it is sharp stopped down to close to wide open (say 1.8-2.0) and fast AF.
And all the Canon folks who thought Nikon glass was expensive. The reason Nikon was able to charge more for there glass is because most of the high priced lenses are of new design. They have produced I believe 3 400 2.8’s in the last 10 or so years while Canon is still making one thats 12 years old. But once Canon starts updating their lenses they will be charging the same or more than Nikon. Example: The Canon 70-200 and 200 f2 are more than Nikon’s version. And know they will try to charge 200 plus over Nikon for a 50 1.4.
Aside new lenses for photography (that are always highly appreciated and requested), we would also like to see a new and different line of lenses: A “cine lens” line from Canon.
Just like the latest Carl Zeiss CP.2 we mention in our last Blog post about “Disassembling & Modding a 5D Mark II for PL Mount”:
http://5dmark2.wordpress.com/2010/06/16/modding-5d-mark-ii-pl-mount-2/
That would be nice, and VERY MUCH appreciated for those who use current and future Canon HDSLRs for Cinematography purpose.
We are almost sure something like that will come in future… Maybe from 3rd parties first (besides Zeiss).
no way that it’s going to be an L.
Canon will get there eventually…
See how long it took Canon to answer Nikon’s D300? ;)
wtb ef-s primes that cost a LOT less
Since Canon has a patent for a 14-24 f/2.8 lens, I suspect that may well be the rumored new lens. ;) If that turns out to be true, Canon will have covered all their bases save the 24-70 f/2.8L IS.
There is the Zeiss, but that is also bloddy expensive and does not even have AF.
The “suggested retail price” for the current is $390, so the $700 quoted above is almost *twice* that.
A 50 f/1.4L would be the end of the 50 f/1.2L.
The number of people willing to shell out for the extra 1/2 stop can be counted on the thumbs of your left hand.
See Nikon. Given the questionable performance of the 2x TC, a 1.7x might be the way to go.
On the other hand, just cramming more Megapixels into the central image area give you the same thing without the need for additional (imperfect) optics – at the cost of a smaller viewfinder image.
if ( BIG IF) it is better than the Sigma then I think 450 is about right – still a FAR cry from the cost of the L…
As always i’d love to see some sort of affordable decent corner to corner sharp wide prime – a replacement for the 20. A 20 1.8 perhaps (sigma makes one – can’t be impossible) or maybe a 18 2.8 or 3.5
I also would like to see a progression of the 24-70 rather than just adding IS – I would love a 24-85 2.8 would make for a great wedding lens…Canon and Nikon both changed the 28-70 to 24-70 – now lets see a little more at the long end…
Not going to be an L lens as this would kill 50 1.2
Don’t forget the 200-400 f/4
??? The Sigma’s a great lens, but mostly because of it’s center sharpness wide open; it’s corners are actually pretty sucky
So you are telling me I should stop waiting for a update of the 15mm Fisheye? Dang, my hopes were so high.
Actually it’s a 1.6 so that the FF frame crowd can have the same advantage the APS-C senor crowd has now :). I do like your reasoning though. I guess I’m in the minority because I used the 1.4x and 2x extenders this past weekend with a 400 5.6 and got some very sharp images with the 2x.
As always the truth is neither black nor white.
I regularly use the 1.4x TC with a 300 f/4 for birding. Towards the edge of the image, CA becomes annoying. IQ in the center is still quite good. Given this degradation, I hesitate to put on a 2x TC.
I do not own the 2x TC. I have read several imdependent reports that you have to stop down by at least one stop (on top of the two you loose due to the magnification) to get reasonable image quality.
How much of that is due to the limits of the IQ of the original telephoto, unavoidable errors of the TC optics, and match/mismatch between the two is anybody’s guess.
The smaller viewfinder image – call it 200% coverage ;-) – can actually be an advantage if you have to find a llittle bird hopping through the bushes.
Agreed. Corners dont’ look good according to tests. But who needs stinking corners open that aperture, Blur Baby Blur.
My left thumb got lopped off in an accident so I agree. Aint nobody going to buy that lens!
God I hate when people say things like “I’d pay $700 no sweat if it is sharp stopped down to close to wide open (say 1.8-2.0) and fast AF.”
Why the HELL would you buy a lens if you can’t use it to its full potential? What happened to the days of FD lenses where they were JUST SHARP no matter what aperture you chose? I think it’s pathetic that people are willing to shell out hundreds and thousands of dollars for lenses that “Are awesome IF you stop it down!”
Pathetic.
A 50 f1.4 would make sense if Canon is going to release a 30mp + 1d mark 4. The 50 f 1.4 stopped down is considered Canons sharpest lens and is usually used for bench mark tests.
So if Canon wants their new 30+ mp camera to perform well on resolution tests then upgrading the bench mark test lens would really make sense.
where have you heard that the 50 1.4 stopped down, wide open, inside out or upside down is the sharpest lens from canon?
that is just crazy talk…
+1
What a fricken loon
While I agree that a 50 1.4 II is way overdue, I am perfectly happy (well, focal-length-wise… ;-)) with the Siggy 30 1.4 and th 85 1.8 (on crop, obviously). But the FF folks could use a decent and less fragile “normal” prime that doesn’t break the bank.
What I personally would like to see, and which is not covered by this rumor, is a longer, but relatively afforedable telezoom, i.e., a replacement for the 100-400. GIve it the latest EF, improved optical design, perhaps twist zoom, improve QC. Perhaps make it 80-400 like Sony’s offering, or preferably even just a tad longer.
And, most importantly: Canon, please stop being greedy like you were with the 70-200 2.8 IS II and actually most of the more $recently released lenses (like the new TS-E’s, yikes!) and keep the price visibly below the 2000€ barrier (at least after you have successfully shafted the early adopters).
Thank you!
If you don’t, I might just sell my 70-200 f4 IS, some other lenses I don’t use anymore, and get the 70-200 2.8 II plus a 2x TC, which would cost me less in the end and which according to some tests can come close to the the 100-400 at the long end under certain circumstances. Well, you might end up having my money either way.
Aargh, no more late posts for me… “latest EF” -> “latest IS”
Not necessarily the “same thing”. Optical reach/magnification is better than reach/magnification obtained through higher sampling, in practice:

It’s not summer yet?
I’ve been pretty happy with my 50mm 1.4, but I’d be happy with a new one. It definitely seems pretty sharp…but having shot half my images on it (the other half on the TS-E 17mm) I can tell it could be sharper. Contrast and color is nice but sometimes the detail isn’t there. At reasonable apertures like f/8 in good light it’s awesome for stuff at close range, but I bought it for the fast f-stop too. Not to mention I have trouble with autofocus, especially in f/1.4 conditions again (though I use live view when it matters; being a newbie it took me a long time to find out why it focuses past infinity – strangely my 17mm does that too, odd for a manual lens). I’ve been finding recently that I have to stop mine down to about f/3.5 to get decent images out of it (but then again mine’s dirty, even the rear element, whoops!)
Here’s to hoping that they’ll be working out a design for a TS-E in the same focal length (I haven’t seen the 45mm but it looks like it could do with a replacement). Ideally they’d make one as fast as the 50mm AF, but it’d be a bigger lens.
Stop with the BS. Nobody is testing anything at World Cup. Photographers are there to make money from photos, not to betatest for Canon.
oh man you again with the 15-70mm rumors.
if canon is really serious about the 1.6 crop format they will work on the 60d and get some weatherproofed lenses to match the 7D dammit.
Nobody has mentioned the reason for the $699 price tag on what would be an ordinary non-L prime — it has IS. But the IS mechanism limits it to EF-S mounts only. Therefore it’s the EF-S 50mm f/1.4 IS USM. Canon’s first EF-S prime.
RE: Canon’s first EF-S prime.
Second. The EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro is the first (and only) EF-S prime.
Where’s my *#&^$(@#*&Q@ 35mm f/1.4L II ?!?!?
That is one big and heavy lens for a small group of specialized users. Canon is better off with a revamped 100-400 f/4-5.6L.
Oh right so all those photographers testing Lenses at The Winter Olympics were faking it to mess with CR Guy’s head?
I didn’t say photographers specifically testing equipment. And you’re right not all photographers will be testing equipment. Though I’m sure Nikon, Sony and Canon are testing out some equipment out there at the World Cup.
But more to the Point, there was absolutely no need to get your panties in a twist. Because I’m sure a lot of us out there would like to know what is possibly being tested at the World Cup, because it was exciting when the Winter Olympics were on and rumours of equipment being tested were flying around left right and centre.
Sharpest lenses from Canon are 200 f2 and 135 f2, the 50 is not in the same ballpark
You say that this is a regular source , but have they ever got anything right ? That’s an important piece of information. If they are regular and regular get things right then this is good news. But if they regularly tell you things that dont happen then it would be good to make that distinction.
I forget now exactly what the CR2 ranking means and I cant find the little key you used to have that broke it down.
I do agree with your point, but what got tested at the olympics? I dont remember seeing anything concrete in the end to suggest that there was anything there being tested that has since been released ?
Although I agree that places like that are likely testing grounds.
Think of all the Canon lens rumors:
14-24 2.8
24-70 2.8 is
35 1.4
50 1.4
135 1.8 is
all the long primes, etc, etc.
I’m sure Canon will come out with something new.
There was a CR3 rumour about a Camera body being tested at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. And I’m sure there was some lenses spotted as well
http://www.canonrumors.com/2010/02/camera-being-tested-in-vancouver-cr3/
And this one as well
http://www.canonrumors.com/2010/02/camera-spotted-in-vancouver/
I find th eonly glaring omission in Canon’s line up (at least compared to Nikon) is a fast normal-equivalent prime, i.e. a 30ish 1.8. Please with USM. Please below 400€.
Canon need to redo the 50 1.4, too bad I already bought a Sigma 50 1.4.
canon also need to make a fast focusing 85 1.4, the 85 1.2 just AF’s too slow.
I am still waiting for a teleconverter that I can use on my 500mm that is on par with Nikon’s.
I love the look of the Sigma, but the autofocus is useless.
It would be amazing if Canon released a 50mm with image quality as good as the Sigma, but with decent autofocus.
I think it would really sell well.
I note that the source for that first CR3 rumor also said “The same source has said we will see a 1Ds Mark IV before the end of February”
He should have his CR3 status removed!
A new lens would be great, Hopefully it is a wide angle zoom like the Nikkor 14-24/f2.8. I also hope we will see a new 300/f4 and 100-400/f4-5.6.
Maybe they’ll finally take their FD circular fisheye lens and redo it into an EF circular fisheye lens, thus making it “not a replacement of anything *current*”.
After having used this lens, all I can say it’s quite overrated.
Sure it’s flexible but if flexibility is the concern then there’s also the 100-400 or even Sigma’s 50-500 OS now :D
To complement the EOS 7D, a camera which shows Canon’s commitment to the 1.6 crop sensor, a new new lens will be announced in time for photokina which will help underpin the 7D as a camera aimed at professionals. The EF-S 15-70mm f/4 IS USM will complement both the EOS 7D and the current EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM. The EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is currently the only lens in the EF-S line which features a constant aperture so the EF-S 15-70mm f/4 IS USM will be the perfect partner to this lens.
The EF-S 15-70mm f/4 IS USM will also compliment the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM a lens which is currently very popular with users of DSLRs with crop sensors such as the EOS 7D.

why compliment the 17-55 2.8 – replace it with a 15-70 2.8
the crop cameras don’t have the same ISO performance as teh full frames so they need the aperture to make up for it…also to get back some of the shallow depth of field that so many people love…
In fact rather make it a 17-70 f/2 = that would be a cool lens that takes advantage of the smaller size sensor. About the same size as a 24-70 2.8 I’d say…
that is a dream lens. However, i am not sure that Canon will make it. just the size alone will be prohibiting, let alone the price. look at the sie of the 17-35mm 2.8. It is already using 82mm filter. can you imagine what it will need for a f 2.0. By strapping the curve, it will take a 123 mm filter. the length of the lens ewill be around 200mm. as for weight, It will be 2lbs easily. do you want to handle this monster???
” do you want to handle this monster???”
Yes, yes, please.
>drool<
Nikon don’t cheap you out on lens hoods either ..
Think of how long it took Nikon to finally catch up (and surpass in some areas) with Canon in DSLR, it’s not surprising that it will take a while the other way round!
Yeah he probably could have. But the source was CR3, that doesn’t change but future posts from him may get down graded to CR2. You have to remember though that Sources have no actual control over releases. It’s marketing and upper management. R&D might have finished the 1Ds MarkIV already but marketing and upper management may have delayed the release to garner greater market anticipation or to get rid of older stocks.
not quite, plus some of the FD such as 1.8 were the same as the EOS 50mm 1.8
Interesting. The low contrast in the 50D images is quite remarkable.
But don’t forget that between the 50D and the 5D2 you are also comparing completely different sensors, and that of course this shows the performance of one particular lens/TC combination.
Still, a very interesting piece of information.
Taking their sweet time. We’ve had one lens announcement and one release. These happened in early January and March respectively. It’s been over 6 months since we knew about any new lens releases.
I think the 50 1.4 remake is a fabulous idea. It needs to be complimented by a few other lenses though. So right now I would not purchase it.
I’d very much like this rumored 50 1.4 to replace my 35 1.4 as my standard indoor lens. But then I’d need to get something else to get wide at 2.8 or better. 24 1.4 II I’m told is soft to very soft in the corners at anything below 2.8. So in order for the 50 1.4 to work with my shooting style I’d probably need Canon to release either a 14-24 2.8 (hoping it’s sharp in the corners like the nikon) or the long- rumored, mythical 24-70 2.8 IS which would probably be better anyway for my style. In this way I get back my wide angle lens and gain IS for low light indoor shots.
I should say “for me it needs to be complimented”
$699 for an EF-S-only lens? I can’t see it.
Other than that the specifications sound alright. I’d definitely enjoy IS.
How do you like your Sigma 50? What camera are you mounting it to and how well is the autofocus working? Thank you.
16-35 f2.8
Yes, different sensors is what we’re talking about for this purpose. If both of them were the same design (including same pixel density), there won’t be any extra “reach” :)
Canon usually announces lenses in Jan-Feb and in Aug-Sep. Canon has announced 4 lenses a year for 5-6 years.
So, I guess Canon will announce 3 new lenses in Aug-Sep, possibly in Photokina.
i can only hope that we get a full-USM, modern 50mm 1.4 update from canon.
the sigma has crappy AF, and the current OEM 50mm 1.4 is unacceptably soft at max ap.
i won’t hold my breath, but this is (i must admit) exciting “news”.
I thinks Canon should make a USM, IS 28mm f1.4 lens that is optimized for APS-C sensor. This will be an excellent “standard , all around lens for the ASP_C sensor user. If canon cannot make it as f1.4 , either due to size, weight, performance or price, I will settle for f 2.0.
What 1.6x advantage does the APS-C crowd have, beside a decreased angle of view ?
does anyone think a 50mm 1.4II will drive down the used-market price of the current 50mm 1.4?
Eventually, it probably will. Looking at the recent release of the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, once that lens came out at a significant premium over the MkI, retailers started selling the MkI version at or near list price, so used prices actually went UP in parallel.
I think the 300 f/2.8 IS is the sharpest one among those..
