5D Mark II Firmware Upgrade
Expect a new firmware upgrade for the 5D Mark II to address the “iris jitter”.

Timeframe for the release is unknown at the moment.

Do not expect any other functionality to be added (i.e. 60fps).

House & the 5D Mark II
Mitch over at Planet5D reported to me that Fox will only be using the 5D Mark II for special lighting circumstances and for a few other types of shots. Apparently post production costs were as high as standard film with the 5D Mark II's files.

The timing is off for me to buy this thing, but you can. I swear this lens was on the 5D Mark II in the final bathroom scene during the House finale. I could be wrong. :)

Editorial: A Little 1D Mark III Love (Don't yell at me)
Some people are curious about what I'm shooting with.

Well, I sold my 1D Mark IVs and moved back to the 1D Mark III.

Why? I honestly prefer the files from the 1D III. My shooting conditions never triggered the AF issues. It also AF's better in low light than the Mark IV.

I'm also not a pro sports photographer, I had no need to have that much money tied up in camera bodies.

I'm also good with having the 5D Mark II for video. Although my video skills leave a lot to be desired.

So if you want a camera that I feel is better than the 7D in IQ, build & AF's as well, give a 1D Mark III a try. They're getting very inexpensive. I've seen some below $1800 USD.

If you love your Mark IV, I'm happy as heck. It's a great camera. If you want a steal, try a Mark III out.

  1. We just helped users (and still try to do), providing information and encouraged them in some campaigns (worldwide, not only here or there), to “push” (request) Canon to release fixes and improvements to public customers. Of course that happened along with lot of other users doing it by themselves.

We never claimed the updates are thank only to what we did or do, it would be false. We ALL users are part of the equation, with multiple variables and parameters.

Without the huge amount of users requesting AND the huge adoption and success of the 5D Mark II for video/movie purposes, the official release (of full manual control) wouldn’t have happened and (along with OTHER factors) the later DSLRs wouldn’t have so rich movie features either.

Those movie features (standard 24/25/30p, 720p50/60p, even Crop Video function and ISO limiters) are DIRECT consequence of users requests. You can still read them on the original petitions and campaigns’ information.

Those video features were NOT present in Canon’s roadmap & plans indeed. That’s something evident when they mentioned the “unexpected success” of the 5D Mark II in the video/filmmaking fields…

Yes, Canon already had Full manual control…. Since 2008, but they never officially released it until June 2009…. (it wasn’t the exact same firmware, but it had Full manual control)

Some production sets/special customers already had it, so the “official” release is not really due nor thanks to big productions or famous people requesting for it, as some people has said, because they ALREADY had it.

Canon provides unofficial firmware versions to specific special customers when they want.

Canon doesn’t need to release official firmware versions with improvements if they don’t consider it will be a good business move (unless an issue is detected or reported, as with the initial official version, and later 2.0.3 and 2.0.4). That’s obvious, it happens on every company developing high tech devices.

Remember Canon’s own words when releasing Full Manual Control for 5D Mark II: “By Popular demand…” and so on when announcing the (next year) update with 24/25p modes in October 2009.

Of course it shows them as a company that “listen to customers” (and they actually do, but it takes LOT of time to make them hear well enough…) That’s marketing, but it’s also true.

The demand was huge. We only collaborated on that purpose.

It’s all about business, customers and sales.

Not easy at all anyway. Huge amount of time to join customers in a positive action (not only by us) is required. Even more to keep on doing it for a long period of time.

When lot of people said “it’s impossible, Canon won’t release improvements”, we (and many more) kept encouraging to request to Canon (through many ways we learned and refined during the process) instead of just rest and complain. (if anyone wants more details, just check our blog since the beginning, but be aware that that’s only part of what we did and do)

This is all thanks to a COMBINATION of Forces and Factors. What happened and happens with the EOS 5D Mark II is a unique case.

  2. the “team” referred to is 5D Mark II TEAM, they comment lot on anything related (obviously) to the 5D mark 2. :P

  3. me, and only me on

    >I honestly prefer the files from the 1D III.

What is it about the 1DIII’s files that you prefer over the 1DIV’s?

  4. Hey Evert,

With your MkIV. What ISO are you shooting at night at weddings. Have you shot much at 6400-25600? Are you getting anything decent in high ISO available light or do you keep it dialed down and use a flash?
