Just thinking out loud here
Canon won't be attending PMA as we all know, but they WILL be attending WPPI. They can't be going to WPPI with just the T2i can they?

5D Mark II firmware delays may give a clue as to what is coming down the pipe. Will we get the 60D or the very desired 1Ds Mark IV? I do have a source that swears a 1Ds Mark IV will be around before the end of February.

Again, I'm just throwing this out there.

Another tidbit to think about. Canon has the largest booth at the event and have just launched new ImagePROGRAF printers, The iPF6300/6350 & 8300.

Be patient, they're coming. :)

I would like to buy a 5DII for myself but seeing as Canon said the firmware upgrade is coming out I’m waiting until it is released.

The main reason for getting a 5DII over 7D/550D for me is that I will only be shooting primes: 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm at those focal lengths, at night, with available light.

The APS-C cameras do have good video features but there is no good 24mm equivalent prime anywhere.

Until there are decent fast wide primes for APS-C I will only be considering a FF camera, and for me to buy it now with the 550D on the way it will need the same (or better) video features.

  3. Many xxD and xxxD owners care about fast primes, too. However, it is probably a reasonably valid assumption that the majority of these owners do not care about really expensive fast primes.

Three out of four xxxD owners that I know have the nifty-fifty and love it. However, when I recommend the 35mm f/2 or 85mm f/1.8 (both of which I own), they baulk at the “high” price. They think I’m nuts spending that much money on a lens. Offering these people a cheaper alternative will boost sales.

What I want to see is the EF 50mm f/1.4 and EF 35mm f/2 brought up to the standard of the EF 85mm f/1.8. Better build quality, proper USM autofocus, maybe bump the 35mm to f/1.4 and all for about the same price. At the same time, introduce ONE new “plastic fantastic” prime lens, something like an EF-S 30mm f/1.8, to complement the already adequate nifty-fifty at about the same price point. That will be a big seller as a “kit prime”, but will not cannibalise sales of the EF versions: too plastic, no USM, not as nice to use, slightly slower, no good when I upgrade to FF next year, etc.

    1. Part of the reason that people buy the APS-C sensor is for smaller size of the camera. So a smaller lens will also help to keep the size and weight down for the whole system.

Actually, the EOS 7D is heavier than the EOS 5D Mark II…
