A different source
A new source is saying Canon will be sticking with the 100-400 focal length for any update they do to the lens.

No word whether or not to expect it at PMA.

Disclaimer
It seems every photo show this lens is slated for replacement. The current model sells extremely well for Canon. I have one and would have no interest in replacing it, my copy is silly sharp. I haven't received any information from bang on sources about such a lens yet. I am bugging them for info though.

EF 200-400 f/4L IS
This seems to be a lens a lot of people would like, I just don't think a lot of those people would pony up the $4K-$5K it would cost. I haven't heard any rumor about such a lens being in development.

EF 400 f/4L IS
This is a lens I have heard two bits of information about over the last few months. I think it'd be more likely you'll see a non diffractive optics version of the 400 than another 400mm zoom added to the lineup.

  1. well, i was on the fence on whether or not to buy the current zoom… looks like i’ll just take the plunge… hope it doesn’t take too long to get a real sharp copy…. the 400/4 would be nice… don’t know if they would get rid of their precious DO though and don’t know what they would sell it for … hopefully nothing close to what the DO is going for

  2. would love to see a 200-400 f/4L IS. For as I watch all my friends switch over to Nikon, they all say besides the D3, the 200-400 f/4 is the best. Something Canon needs to catch up with, among other things, like something to compare with the D3

  3. Just as long as whatever focal length(s) don’t employ the push pull design. It ages poorly imo.

  4. I’m in the market for the 100-400 but with all the rumors, I don’t see any reasonable reason for me to purchase a lens that is likely to be replaced in the near future.

I don’t see why current users of the 100-400 would upgrade to a new version, but I don’t see why users such as myself who are looking to purchase one would do so now rather then waiting for a new version.

So unless canon releases a new version I can’t see the current 100-400 selling very well.

I will be first in line to buy a new version if/when it comes out.

  5. I’ve had a 100-400 IS. It is pretty poor at the long end, the push-pull zoom is not easy to use, and the IS needs to be updated. I wouldn’t buy another of the current design.

I’d like to see a 400 or 500mm 5.6 IS though. My 400/5.6 is a great lens, IS would really help.
