Here it is
This is what is going to be happening with pre-orders and the first shipment of 5D Mark II’s.
Retailers have to prove there has been money exchanged from a customer for a pre-order.
1) Canon must receive a fax from the retailer proving money has been taken for the 5D Mark II. Sales receipts or whatever.
2) Once this has been done by retailers, then Canon will set the allocation as to which stores get what. No proof of preorder…. No camera shipment.
3) Canon must receive this information by Friday, November 14, 2008 or no cameras for you.
4) This basically assures no one is getting the $2799 pricing.
UPDATE
I’m unsure if this is Canada only, if anyone else from other areas of the planet have any info… please let me know.
Canon Canada updates web site
Canon Rumors and its loyal readers can take credit for making Canon Canada admit they have 1Ds Mark III’s. It’s now on the Canon Canada web site.
We’re taking credit until Canon says otherwise.

Come on… that sucks big time. Can’t believe that after so much waiting this is the only option. Sounds to me like Big Brother… someone is controlling us here.
Will this be the ‘worldwide’ situation or just in Canada?
arghhh.. I just noticed that it’s CR5…
1Ds Mark III is showing up on Canon USA also at $7999.
This should be a separate entry with a CR5, not part of a 5D Mark II’s entry.
BTW, this appears to be the same sensor as the 5D Mark II but run on a DIGIC III, limiting the high ISO as an expanded 3200. Perhaps use of the same sensor explains the low initial availability of the 5D Mark II? Hmmm….
GOOD CATCH!!!
Quite frankly ridiculous solution considering that most major online retailers do not charge the customer before the camera ships!
I assume that by going to Henry’s store today and putting a $100 deposit I’ll jump ahead of everybody who pre-ordered online?
Wow. Isn’t this a little bit of a predicament?
Say you are a retailer and have 50 preorders. You can only request cameras from Canon once you charge those 50 customers. Once you charge those orders Canon must deliver all 50. If Canon looks at overall supply and demand and deems you can only get 30 cameras aren’t your customers going to be irate?
Am I misinterpreting this?
well i pre-ordered my 5D2 at adorama. i send my payment via paypal. i have a a reciept of the order but they did not charge my account yet. i figured once they ship the camera i will be charged. this will be my first dslr, i hope the price does not increase. i have a 24-70L and a 50mm L lenses on my shelf with no camera to use it on.:(
honestly I doubt this will be true,
probably just a viral marketing tool to scare people to put money down. If retailers have to call all their customers to ask them for a deposit in order to get first pick, a lot of them will be pissed and will probably feel less bad about pushing nikon gear for the holidays :)
I did not put any money down, I think i’m 3rd on the list of a small dealer here. I don’t care if I don’t get first wave. as long as I get one in december.
I have a feeling a number of US customers are like me and have a camera pre-ordered through the US, and one pre-ordered through Canada. I almost pulled the trigger on having the camera charged to my account when the US dollar hit a recent peak, but rumors started flying about a price increase and the dealer didn’t want to commit to the old price. Now I’m leaving the camera on pre-order because the US dollar keeps getting stronger and I don’t mind waiting until spring to get the camera.
If a bunch of people are like me, Canon Canada may have a lot of pre-orders fall through if the US dollar tanks or they start shipping a bunch of 5DII’s through the US. So I can see that they want to know if the pre-orders are serious.
@Ian,
CanonRumors rated this one as CR5, and he’s 100% correct. Canon Canada must receive invoices proving a purchase has been made, if not no cameras for the dealer.
With all this said, it’s still marketing hype and it works for them very well.
It sounds like this is a good way to weed out the interested buyers from actual buyers.
With the cameras in short supply, camera stores could inflate waiting lists to get extras, and then sell the extras on ebay for a bigger markup.
It is one way of getting cameras into the hands of users versus ebay sellers. Presumably, it will be a short wait for those who pay. Maybe only a week or two.
ok then I will call my dealer asap and put a deposit down lol
So in that saying, all the retailers in Canada should start charging the pre-orderers to get the “proof” rite? Has anyone been charged recently?
I haven’t been charged, but if friday’s the date limit that doesn’t leave a lot of time
So I’m on a pre-order list with Camera Store Calgary but haven’t given them any payment details (they didn’t ask – said they’d call people as ordered on their list when the camera’s came in.) So according to this, I’m not getting a camera cause I haven’t paid yet. I wonder if I’m going to get called tomorrow.
Do the deposit now!!! Otherwise you will wait. Apparently Canon has so much market share they can call the shots, an LSD dream.
My understanding is a photocopy of a visa or debit transaction, not just yeah he paid a few bucks is required. Anything like that will be quickly rejected and you will wait like all the others. Remember get a CreditCard/Debit reciept.
Amazon is posting $3299 for the body and $3999 for the kit. My preorder for the kit still shows $3499 and I’ve not been notified about a change…yet. (I’m in California)
A friend of mine that works at Henry’s says that he is hearing they will be receiving most, if not all, of the first shipment of the 5d mk ii. They are not asking to take full payment before their orders come in.
He also said that Canon is being really strict that the camera needs to go out at the new price, but if people are looking for other pieces to purchase – warranty, memory, lens etc, him and all the other sales staff at his store are going to do the best prices they can without risking a written warning.
I’ve talked with my Camera shop. He told me that he had a brief discussion with his Canon pro rep. His point is that only names are enough, no need of any proof of partial payment… that leaves me in a gray zone.
Fred C how sure are you about your statement ?
I posted this recently
Michael’s Camera in Melbourne, Australia have confirmed our local pricing
5D2 body only A$3999 equiv to C$3170 / US$2559
(as of 13/11/08 currency exchange)
5D2 + 24-105L kit A$5399 equiv to C$4230 / US$3470
our price is cheaper, because our dollar really sux at the moment. price will increase eventually & be more expensive then US price.
Ben S.,
The price Amazon is showing is not Amazon’s price but “Willoughby’s” which is a third party selling their product on Amazon. Amazon hasn’t actually shown a price for over a month. It just has a link to be notified when its available (when you select Amazon as the reseller).
However, onecall.com (US based) still has the prices showing as 2,699 and 3,499 as originally given from Canon. They are also still accepting pre-orders.
brrrr i’m starting to hate canon ! gotta sell all their glasses and move to nikon.
This is ridiculous. It might be the reason why Amazon.com shows it as “Sold Out” – Amazon does not take money until the item has shipped, and that should be the standard for everybody.
randy, think of us if you plan to sell lenses :-)
Well, I waited for the 5d MK ii for the video feature (I know I’m probably in the minority) so I could video my daughter for Christmas. It looks like I’ll have my wish…. for Christmas of 2009.
WOW, the RED SCARLET is going to take Canon mount!!!
“Scarlet will launch in 4 choices ranging from $2,500 (and possibly less) to $12,000 with a variety of lens mounts (yes, Canon and Nikon) capable of shooting 3K @120fps on up to 6K @30fps. ”
http://www.engadget.com/
if you really want to video your daughter this Christmas get a canon hf-11. the 5d2 will only deliver good quality video with a tripod and by focusing manually… not the best way to shoot kids :)
I am a CPS member here in the Netherlands.
However I will never pay a 2500 euro for a camera beforehand if I would not be sure to get it instantly.
We already have been waiting too long, for a bit too much hyped camera.
That said I’ve heard today from my dealer Canon NL was thinking of releasing it only on december 5th (Sinterklaas -which is like christmas in the rest of the world). This particular dealer was not pleased with this, if this would be true. They were afraid of loosing sales due to cancellations for comming too late.
dang im speechless on red’s achievements… such a young company and able to come out with such mind blowing ideas and tech in such short period of time responding to nikon and canon… and not to mention their ability to listen to what people actually want and tries to deliver !
Canon’s latest announcement for their pro line up camcorders which is gonna cost $3999 seems too old fashioned and out dated and a rip off considering what Red can offer in the near future.
I guess its really time for all these big boys to emphasize more on giving customers what they want or they’ll be in really big trouble. !
“I’d be really surprised if Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Panavision, Arri, Dalsa, and everyone else did not pee their pants this morning in fear…. This is absolutely amazing.†– REDUSER QUOTE
Ian, I wasn’t really in the market for a $500 camcorder that I would use very rarely (I find I’m not that big into video, but want it occasionally). I may just go with the G10 on this and use it’s video feature. I need a more walking around type camera anyway and the 5d MK II is a little bit to put in a shirt/pants pocket.
From the Red Forum.
So what happens to the RED ONE owner with the release of Scarlet and EPIC? What about our promise? Since we have found a way to make Scarlet and EPIC upgradeable and interchangeable in every way, we decided that “Obsolescence Obsolete” applies to the RED ONE camera as we envisioned it in the beginning. But it now also applies to the RED ONE owner .
A RED ONE owner has several choices.
1. A RED ONE owner can keep the RED ONE and upgrade to the Mysterium-X sensor for a TBD price… just as we promised.
2. A RED ONE owner can purchase any EPIC and trade in their RED ONE for full $17,500 value towards the purchase… just as we promised.
3. A RED ONE owner can choose to keep their RED ONE and receive a one-time credit of 12% on a Scarlet system purchase.
Once any of the above has been chosen, the serial number will be marked as “Executed”. It can not be used again for #2 or #3. It can, however, always be eligible for another sensor upgrade as we release new sensor technology in the future.
A RED ONE owner also has priority on purchasing a Scarlet or EPIC. Beyond the new Mysterium-X sensor option we will continue to offer firmware upgrades, service and parts for the RED ONE. It has become the legacy of RED. We will never forget the camera and those that believed in RED with their purchase of the now famous, RED ONE.
I really doubt if too many 5D MK II types would want to buy a Red Epic where the down payment is $17,500. No word on the price of the Scarlet, but its not going to be $2700.
Now, I see Scarlet Prices on engaget, It is a modular design and you can pick and choose from lots of them. Price starts at $7000 for something called the “Brain” for the size equivalent to FF (S35) and will be able to be configured to use use Canon, PL, Nikkor, and Red lenses, probably manual focus only, this is not specified yet. By the time you buy all the pieces, it will be much more.
Interesting, but somewhat out of my price range.
I just learned that certain Canadian chains will be handling the situation differently, per agreement with Canon. I also heard that, being within the top 5 of my chain’s list, I should receive mine in 1.5-2 weeks. Can’t wait!
Anybody heard how Aden will handle this? I haven’t heard anything from them since the price hike…
For Aden, I think like other store, they might have 2 ways to get their priority list.
1- you are a faithful customer know by them and/or
2- you made a pre-order.
If I was a store owner, I would sale to #1 before #2, but obviously I’m not a store owner.
However I don’t know for Aden, but for sure I’ll buy from them (like all my other cameras). As everyone on this forum, I hope to get it soon…
I just called The Camera Store, Calgary, and they told me my pre-order (without payment) was still fine. They said that as they’re one of the the largest Canon retailer in the west, Canon will be shipping them a large number of the camera’s and I’m fine just being on their pre-order call list. So much for CR5.
Anyone pre-order here from Blacks? Are they honoring pre-order prices?
I ordered one camera online and one in store from Vistek. The one in the store has a deposit but the one online doesn’t. If Vistek isn’t able to secure pre-orders made online because people didn’t make a deposit and it’s going to look pretty bad. Apparently I could just walk in to their store tomorrow morning throw down a deposit and still get one before someone who ordered online over a month ago.
Dumb.
I hope everyone who pre-ordered gives their distributor an extremely difficult time regarding the price increase and now the apparent lack of inventory.
How stupid could Canon be underestimating demand so much? And why have distributors have become total lap-dogs to Canon. Welcome to the new fascist regime that is Canon.
Even though I have so much invested in Canon and desperately want an HD video mode. I think I might be switching to Nikon.
I don’t think Canon has underestimated the demand. I think they’re just creating hype. If you make it sound like it’s not available… people will want it more. that’s all.
I pre-ordered from Blackphoto and luckily they charged me right after the transaction (not just a deposit). I called few days ago and they told me that they do honoured the old price because the transaction is done. However, they told me it is on back-order until late Dec or early Jan, 2009.
I don’t know if anyone else took advantage of this, but blacks photography in canada (www.blacksphoto.com) had a promotion (right before the price increase) where you could pre-order a 5d mk II for $2699 CAD. The web only promotion took $100 off the (at that time) MSRP of $2799. Sounded cool so I took advantage of that. Then two days later the price went up, and the promo was gone, even before the promo’s publish end date. Anyway, i was totally expecting my pre-order price to go up, but no one has called me about it. Also, I read on another forum that Blacks Photo was in fact going to honour the pre-order price. Further, I checked my credit card and they did in fact charge my card the $2699 (CAD) last week when I submitted the pre-order on-line. I have a bill/receipt and my credit card was charged. *shrug*
I’m interested to see what will actually happen in the end :-)
K.
@Keener
Lucky!!!
@Bebopcola
That remains to be seen! :-)
Soon I’m gonna get this baby…..sold all my Nikon gears.
Yep, Keener, me 2. They will honour it. I called to confirm that already.
The only thing I can see happening for blacks is that they will either be forced to take a loss of the camera (selling it for less than or equal to what they pay Canon) OR Canon may have told them they won’t get any pre-order stock until other stores (who were forced to pay the $300) have their pre-orders filled.
If Blacks manages to give customers the Camera on time at the cheaper (or rather even further discounted price) then I will definitely be switching camera stores!
@ Ian – Yes right now potential lack of inventory is hype. If they can’t deliver on time that hype will be converted into an extreme disappointment that Canon was retarded about properly estimating demand. But with the way they have handled the price increase I would bet that Canon is retarded.
As Canon dealer I finally recieved one. This is a store sample, yet not considered a pre-production model. Beautful camera and the video is fantastic.
I have been asked to keep the camera behind doors till the launch date.
This is simply incredible.
I was thinking about this “funny” releasing from Canon.
First of all I am waiting for 5D update since 2006. At this time even consumer level DSLRs had cleaning sensor feature and better LCD…. And after 2007 I am also expecting more megapixels… Now having this circus and marketing tricks fallen on us I get fed up. I realize that all is just philosophy of fear – If you don’t preorder no mark II. no camera for you for long time! If you don’t pay deposit no camera for you for very long time! If you don’t buy L Canon lenses now Canon is probably planning same price increase like Nikon (Nikon stuff in Canada is getting more expensive since 17 Nov. 2008).
Guys who are pulling this shit doesn’t realize that economy is really falling down and everything is actually on discount. I just watch TV news and they were showing retailers doing discounts same like boxing day! Fuck of Canon and Nikon go to hell, keep your fear manners and you will fail once first wave of blinded customers go away you will feel real crisis same like all other companies and real estate agents. Than you will have to lower the prices and deliver your product on time for the first time no delays and funny price increases!!!
If people has no money for rent and payments no Camera equipment will be sold at least not in the same quantities like now. Your philosophy of fear doesn’t work for me and I make sure to pass my view on this matter as further I can.
Camera store will not have 5D mark II for me when I need it or I don’t like the price – I will survive without it.
And Nikon and all other camera makers are only happy to see Canon failing their promises and bring better product for reasonable price.
hey fred,
can you tell us your impressions? ie. iso performance, IQ etc…
appreciated
cheers
ian
fred along with your impressions when is your launch date
I haven’t had the camera all that long, so far it’s incredible, IQ is beyond my expectations. ISO performance as expected, you will be amazed.
My launch date is when I actually have stocked cameras to sell. Who knows when that may be?
the reports state that retail sales have been the lowest so far in october. with recession showing no sign of letting up either canon is just trying to squeeze the most out of its customers or plainly shooting themselves in the foot.
if it really is the case and they don’t send cameras to stores unless people pre-order, i’m definitely switching to nikon, already got plenty of people interested in my canon equipment.
The continuing saga of pre-orders..
Okay, so I had a chance to hit up a couple of Blacks Photography stores in Calgary over the weekend. I asked them about how the pre-orders worked and both of them told me the same thing.
“To pre-order you have to give us the full price of the camera. You are effectively buying the camera from the warehouse, right then and there (at whatever price it is listed at), and are just waiting for it to be delivered to you. This means we can not charge you more later.”
in one store they looked up the camera in their system and apparently, Blacks Photography (Canada wide) has 25 on order, and only 15 people so far have taken advantage of pre-orders. I thought that was an insanely low number, but then I rationalized it. Not a heck of a lot of people are going to drop that kind of money on something they’re unsure about. That is, is it any good? when is it coming? etc.. In most cases, a pre-order is just a name on a list, and most sane people would rather just put their name on a list, or put a small deposit, rather than paying for the whole thing outright.
I guess the ironic thing is, the somewhat insane act of paying that kind of money for something that has a huge question mark over it might actually pay off this time around, as (it seems) Canon is only shipping to people who have pre-orders with money already attached to it.
Just thought I’d share my story.
P.S. I would like to thank Canon Rumors for my (hopefully) cheap 5D MarkII! Reading this forum tipped me to the price increase, and prompted me to order with blacks because they still had the old price listed when everyone else had already jacked up their prices. Blacks raised their prices the very next day. Of course, I was taking a gamble and actually thinking that blacks would probably end up charging me more in the end, but hopefully the gamble pays off.
K.
Hey Keener,
This also echos the feedback i’ve gotten from retailler here in Quebec. When asking around, I was told they expected unit to sit on the shelves as they did not sell all their allotment in pre-orders. One store also mentionned some people cancelled their pre-orders before and after the price went up. As far as dates, I was told in the next week but that Canon was not very reliable with dates…
Great,
maybe I’ll have one after all
Blacks only has 15 orders nationwide on the camera because they are a stationary store. Most professionals order their professional cameras from a professional camera store like Vistek or Henry’s, who both have many hundreds of orders.
I thought most stores were stationary?
