Canon has announced a recall for certain Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM lenses.

Phenomenon

When shooting in a high-temperature environment, the intended exposure may not occur, and the brightness of the captured image in the same scene may vary, or the error “Err01” may occur.

*Lenses with serial number engraved on the mount are not eligible.

Free repair acceptance period

Until March 2026

Check with your regional Canon repair department to arrange repair if you have one of the affected serial numbers.

  1. looks like only lenses manufactured in 2022 are affected, my 50 1.2 is at least a decade old. I would guess that most of the 50 1.2 ef lenses out in the wild are not going to be part of the recall

    But it's an interesting data point that Canon did a production run of this EF lens last year.

    I was trying to find the article I read, but can't. However, my understanding is that Canon keeps making lenses until they are officially discontinued.

    They go to "Final Sale" status until supply runs out and then the status changes to "Discontinued".
    However, you are correct in that internally "Final Sale" is discontinued.
