Sony Announces the Sony A7 V

It's pretty clear that Canon wanted to slightly eclipse the Sony A7V with every spec
I am not sure how Canon or Sony would even know what the other was going to come out with.
Each camera was a reasonable upgrade.
The only advantage that Sony had is that they knew the Canon price ahead of setting theirs.

October CIPA 2025: Compacts Skyrocket

I suspect the driver is that P&S cameras are trending with Gen Z.
You seem to be correct.

There was something maybe two years or more ago that it was becoming cool in Japan for buying the earlier p&s because the noise offered a analig like quality that separates the look from contemporary devices. I think at least the Fuji or maybe it was another manufacturer won't allow chimping.

Anyway, mores specifically I (sorry wasnt clear) was referring to the CIPA results mentioning the price increases:

The shipment value increases are even more stark, identifying that the camera manufacturers are not only increasing their shipments, but shipping more expensive cameras. Shipment values of built-in lens cameras have increased by 49% while interchangeable lens camera values have only increased by 1%. This tends to indicate that the product mix for interchangeable lens cameras is getting less expensive, while the product mix for compact cameras is increasing in value

I neglected to consider Trump's Tarrifs have influenced price increase as well...

Are New Features Coming to the EOS R5 Mark II & EOS R1 in February?

When someone is on the fence, then even such small feature can decide. The R8 it a good example. Besides IBIS, there’s no a real dealbreaker. But when you add all the small things then you buy the R6 if you’re not on a tight budget.
I’m sure budget is a major factor for many buyers. Canon knows this, which is why the EOS RP remains 'current' in the lineup even though it's almost 6 years old. Personally, budget isn't really an issue but I chose the R8 over the R6II for use as a FF travel camera due to its smaller size.

Sony Announces the Sony A7 V

but at the same time I am not a fan of having to sift through a lot more photos after.
Canon has a great management for that. You can map a button to “lock” and then press delete all files (except for the ones picked with “lock”) and you keep the one or two best.

Better choices are even better, but a) Canon is not currently making some lenses that Sigma offers... and b) I would not call the latest Sigma offerings "bad"
I didn’t mean the Sigmas are bad. I meant suitable for a person. I use the 14-35 f/4, 28-70/2.8 and 70-200 f/4 and other systems have worse variants FOR ME. I also use the 600mm f/11, also a lens that I like and don’t see in other systems.
I totally understand that other people have other preferences and therefore they choose different systems

Canon’s disdain for APS-C users.

One other point worth mentioning regarding the complaint that Canon has 'not released RF-S prime lenses' is that the statement itself is false. We are now 3.5 years after the first RF-S lens came out, and there are two RF-S prime lenses. That's double the number of EF-M primes at this relative point after the system launch (there was only the 22/2) and double the number of EF-S primes in that same time period after the first EF-S lens (there was only the 60/2.8 Macro).

The two RF-S primes are not often discussed on this forum, likely due to the demographic here. The RF-S 7.8mm Dual Lens and the RF-S 3.9mm Dual Fisheye lens are intended for content creators, not photographers, but that doesn't change the fact that there are already two RF-S primes. That indicates that Canon is now devoting more (or at least, faster) effort to crop prime lenses than with the EF-S or EF-M mounts. It’s just that ‘we’ are not the target market.

Sony Announces the Sony A7 V

Sony seems to be using the lower pricing of the 3rd party accessories to build a more robust ecosystem to where they can charge more for their bodies. Canon seem to be charging less for their bodies to sell more accesories. Take the R6miii which Canon has priced at $2,800. Sony releases the direct competior A7V AFTER Canon with LESS features and prices it at $2,900.

Canon releases the R5mii at $4,400 and then put in on sale for $3,900. Meanwhile Sony releases the A1II AFTER the R5mii, doesn't update much, adds precapture and increases the price to $7k.

Sony spent years trying to put out camera bodies with more tech that are priced aggressively to make up for their lack of historical customer base. Its clear they now feel they have enough people tied to their ecosystem that they no longer need to compete on price and specs. So now Canon is saying hey we have the better specs per price buy our camera and then when they need a new lens they makeup the extra money. Sony is saying pay more upfront for our bodies because you'll have cheaper options for accessories that we wont make money from later.

Sony seems to be focused on being a premium product. The Chinese may be able to attack the budget and eventually the midrange but they will probably always have trouble branding luxury products. This seems to be the same lesson they've learned in the TV space. Companies like TCL and Hisense make the best TV's for the money and have gobbled up market share. Sony focuses on the high end luxury tvs and makes more per unit due to that image.

While Canon is primarily an imaging and printing company Sony is an electronics company. If smartphones were to replace cameras then Sony would just either make smarthones or sell the sensors to the companies who are. If the Chinese start making apsc or full frame cameras, they'll just sell them the sensors. They sell more sensors to car makers then they put in cameras.

Camera are about 5% of Sony's revnue so if they completely lost that entire market to the Chinese and picked up some sensor sales that wouldn't be that impactful. Meanwhile Cameras are 20% of Canon's revenue and they aren't a major seller of sensors. As a result Canon seems to be more invested in Cameras as an actualy product that is key to their business where as Sony seems to treat cameras as a means to an end.
I mostly agree, whereas I would never define anything by Sony as luxury, as they target high tech feature and not image (like Leica or Hasselblad) and they seem to disregard attractive design completely.

Canon has a big industry department, too, but for sure are more committed to the imaging dimension as OEM wrt Sony.

As for Chinese luxury, Hasselblad is already here to stay.

Is a ‘Holy Trinity’ of f/2.8 STM Zoom Lenses on the Horizon?

If you are travelling but still want f2.8, then this new STM range makes a lot of sence. It also makes a lot of sense if your want the f2.8 apaerture, but down want the pro build / bulk.
The 70-180mm f2.8 STM is a logical step for Canon. After all both Nikon and Tamron have a version of this lens that is small, lightweight, sharp and very popular.

Canon’s disdain for APS-C users.

Many first-person shooter games have the feature to earn badges based on heroic or stupid behavior you show during the game. Such an achievement is usually announced to the complete team you are playing with through a sound or jingle.

If this forum were such shooter, you would get your “purple heart” badge for pointing out that Canon would build a lens based on individual desire rather than on business analysis. The sound played on the forum would be “Canon is leading the market by wisdom and science” shouted in a drill sergeant voice followed by a Darth Vader like breathing sound from Neuro.

The “Eiserne Kreuz” badge you would earn by pointing out that there is indeed a benefit from using APS C cameras in regard to length of the lens and IQ. This time the sound would be “You don’t understand reach” shouted in a choir by the complete full frame mafia here on the forum.

Had you been on the forum already 10 to 15 years ago, you could have earned a “ Bronce Valor” badge by defending the APS H format as the only valid sensor size for serious professionals, the silver version for claiming that the term “Full frame” should be reserved for the Texas Leica (GW 690III) and finally the golden one for debating the pros and cons of the Canon EOS IX.

BIRD IN FLIGHT ONLY -- share your BIF photos here

The White-booted Racket-tail is a hummingbird found in the Andean cloud forests from Ecuador to Venezuela. I photographed this male while birding in Colombia in November, 2025.

Background separation, pose of the hummingbird, the colours of the flower, That's a really nice one.

Canon’s disdain for APS-C users.

Sharing a viewpoint is fine, sharing a contrary viewpoint is not. Mmmmmkay.

FWIW, I personally would like to see Canon make some nice RF-S primes, and it seems like low-hanging fruit to have converted the M22/2 and M32/1.4 (or even the M28 Macro) to the RF mount as they did with the M18-150 (looking at the lenses, I can see why they needed to redesign the M11-22 but that should not be needed for the three). But they haven't, and most likely that is a data-driven decision based on how well those lenses sold (or didn't sell) in the EF-M mount.

But I'd like even more to see some of those niche lenses you won't mention. TS-R 14mm, please.
I would bet money that RF-S versions these M lenses or updated designs will appear at some point. the question is if that will be before or after lenses such a 200- 600 lens 5.6, the TS-E lenses or 35mm 1.2...
The sharing of that contrary viewpoint just felt like a very well read, oft repeated statement that did not further anything. Beating a dead horse.

About as redundant as what I just wrote.

And, well, a TS-R 14mm could very well be an item coursing through my neural pathways.
Almost everything people write (especially on internet) is redundant unfortunately not everyone could read it or can understand the truth or lack of truth immediately and so it gets repeated ad nauseam.

The Buffy Helmetcrest is a hummingbird endemic to the high elevations of the Central Colombian Andes. I photographed this individual feeding on Espeletia flowers at almost 14,000 feet in Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados.

Gorgeous bird. Needs extra horsepower to hover at those altitudes, but I see it is more of a gripper than a hoverer. Makes sense when the air is that thin.

Canon’s disdain for APS-C users.

Pretty straight forward. No statements of "Canon must", or "Canon doomed". No demands at all. Just his experience.
To me the OP understands where Canon finds their profit. It doesn't seem they needed to be informed on the details regularly provided by Neuro.
