Internal Source from Japanese Broadcaster NHK says IOC has a Do-or-Die Date of March 28 for Olympics to Go ahead or Not!

I will remember this post when the Olympics are cancelled and I will DEFINITELY be saying I TOLD YOU SO !!!

Right now I would say there is a 30% chance of cancellation of the Olympics and every week until March 28, 2020 is another 10% added !!!
.
Because of LEGAL contracts with major broadcasters and the host city (Tokyo) the HARD YES/NO CANCEL date is April 15, 2020.

the IOC (International Olympic Committee) LEGALLY MUST GIVE NOTICE of a YES or NO by no later than that date!

.
Harry, Olympics will likely (99%) be cancelled, OK? regardless of your fairy tales.

Canon R5 8K 30fps with AF

The 20fps stills mode is almost certainly 12-bit ADC (the 1DX3 e-shutter is also 12-bit in all drive modes).

But yeah, the 1DX3 5.5K/60fps has the same throughput as the R5's 8K/30fps… but only without AF!
All about this R5 is distinctly different from the way Canon has done things in the past. I wonder why the 1DX III seemingly got less love from Canon with regards to the video AF.

Is it just a firmware thing? Since they wanted to make sure the body could be ready for the Olympics, maybe some aspects were left out of the initial development and meant to be added later.

Or does the R5 have more new hardware other than just IBIS, that was too experimental for the 1D series? I doubt it. So I would agree it has to be 12-bit with eShutter. But I also wrote that I can guarantee that the 8K mode will have no AF a few weeks back. So yeah...

So much to speculate about :ROFLMAO:

The Canon EOS R5 will have an SD & CFExpress slot [CR2]

I confirm that. I sourced a Sandisk high capacity card recently via an authorised Sandisk distributor. The card has failed within literary hours of use. Upon a rigorous investigation, it turns out that I was sold a counterfeit product. Refunded with apologies. with no explanation Provided as to how this even a possibility for a product sourced via an authorised supply chain. I made some calls
And apparently there are number of offical
And “unofficial” supply chains that they are connected to. It is becoming really convoluted lately. I am going to Source Sandisk product directly from the top level distributor in the country.

I recently got a B+W polarizer through amazon that was about as genuine as a three dollar bill. I sent in back and bought a real B+W polarizer from B&H.

The kicker? I like the look of the shots I got with the fake filter better than the shots I've gotten with the genuine article!:ROFLMAO::LOL::ROFLMAO::oops::cry:

Another Canon camera shows up for certification

I'm betting the R6 is either going to have dual SD slots or one CFExpress slot. They have to differentiate it from the R5 beyond just changing the sensor.
My guess is Cfexpress to be able to catch these speeds (12/20). Canon has to implement dual card slots or else they will kill sales of R6. If everything goes well I think that R6 will sell more this time than R5... especially if its sub 1000$ from R5.

Wasabi batteries in EOS R?

Hi AlanF, it should be a simple matter to calculate power sent into the battery during a charging cycle - this is just mA integrated with time. I expect the measurement to be reasonably accurate. I agree that it is the discharged power that counts. If we assume that the charged power is measured consistently (even if not accurately) and that there is a reasonably good relationship between charged and discharged power, then the relative charged power of two batteries should give a reasonably indication of comparative capacity. This indicates that the Wasabi is about 5% less than the Canon, even though it claims quite a bit higher.

Hi MSP, the Wasabi battery is near new (just two charge cycles). I don't know how many cycles the LP-E6N has had - I got it new with my R in October 2019 and rotate four batteries through the R. Its still showing 3 green bars in the R battery health indicator. I think the comparison is fair.
As for burning the house down, I haven't read of any situations where Wasabi or Watson batteries have damaged cameras, although there are a few reports of batteries swelling and being difficult to remove from Olympus cameras. My father flies radio controlled aircraft. The lithium batteries he uses to power the electric motors in his planes do combust from time to time (they are a different form of lithium) - he stores his batteries in a ceramic pot with a lid!

I've always used Canon batteries in my Canons (300D, 20D, 5D, 5DII, 5DsR, 6D, M3 and now R) until now. Previously there were issues with incompatible chips, but the Wasabi is fine. I'm not concerned about damage. The question is the length of life. Let's see. I'm also interested in the new battery in the R5.

NAB Cancelled

All large gatherings are going to be cancelled in the coming weeks. We have a huge NCAA first and second round playoff scheduled in Spokane next week. Last I heard, its still planned, but if it goes off, it may be the last big gathering.

There are many large conventions in the spring and summer, it is beginning to be likely that most will be cancelled and we will hole up in our castles waiting for the virus to pass us.

Nikon has to postpone D6 because of Corona virus

Its not so much where the final assembly is done as it is where the components are produced. Even a single component can stop production if it can't be sourced elsewhere.
Precision and quality in the final assembly is extremely important, I just remember Nikon's trouble with D800 sensors that weren't well adjusted. Some years ago, Roger Cicala from lens rentals guessed in a blog that Canon's production has reached a new level of precision, because Canon's lenses tested didn't show any badly decentered copies anymore. When they e.g. reviewed Nikon's then new 300mm f/4 diffraction lens they had to rung three copies or so though their optical tests until they got a well-centered copy. Plus, my wife bought a Sigma 500mm f/4.5 for her Nikon gear some years ago, because a rare review of 300, 400, and 500mm primes in a German photozine revealed that most Nikon lenses suffered from decentered lenses, again.

I think that Nikon follows a policy of financial cuts since many years that aren't good for quality, at least below the level of their D(X) series. In fact, in former times Canon cameras were cheaper than Nikon's, now it has partially reversed. Sad, I loved Nikon's quality in the old analogue times...

Canon will announce a new Cinema EOS camera ahead of NAB [CR3]

I wonder if this will be a C300 MK III that will be targeted at corporate/doc shooters. It will probably shoot on the same 5.9k sensor found on the C500 II, down scaled to 4k, to a middle ground codec with no internal raw. That would effectively put it right in the middle of the C200 and the C500 II. You can either get the C200 with 4k sensor and internal raw, the C300 III with 5.9k sensor and a robust middle ground codec but no raw, or the C500 II with everything in one box.

Canon's Downsizing of 86 Authorized Dealers

Sorry, I've never met a staffer at BB that knows anything. Maybe things have changed? I gave up going there several years ago.

Worse, they will tell you an outright lie rather than admit they don't know.

I ran into one that DID know something once, and he complained he couldn't get other departments to just refer people to him when they had a question in their area of expertise.

RF 24-70 f2.8L IS

Question: Do you use DPP for post-processing workflow (if you post-process at all)? It seems these new RF cameras have DLO (digital lens optimizer) enabled by default, which can make these lenses seem a bit better than they really are. I noticed this with my RP and 35mm 1.8 - at f1.8, the IQ seemed surprisingly decent with sharp corners...then I realized DLO was preset. Once I disabled it, the corners got noticeably softer. It seems that with MILC (specifically, RF mount), digital correction of lens flaws and electronic image manipulation will be much more prevalent.
I only use Lightroom and raw images, so there is no DLO corrections in my images.

Should af sharpness equal live view sharpness?

They should be pretty much the same, but only if you use one shot and not servo. But it is tricky. When calibrating you need at least 10 EV light and test at 50x focal length and take at least 5 shots at each AFMA value, with pull it completely oof between shots. Then compare them in Lr at full 1:1.

one of the many reasons I don’t miss dslr’s :p

Patent: Canon universal battery grip

Give up on profits? Nah. Make a low cost adapter and charge a nice margin. R&D costs for a one time universal battery grip that they don’t need to redesign for every new camera body and charge the same for this grip as for all their body specific grips. A lot more profit in this model.

If the electronic interface is the same (a universal adapter wouldn't work otherwise), making a new camera-specific grip is just a matter of reshaping the plastic, a quick & cheap job.
