Why the 5D Mark V?

With an Eos R's EVF, I can see exactly the DOF that I will get on the final shot.

Well, sort of. As long as the angular size of the displayed image is the same as the angular size of the EVF when you are looking in the viewfinder, you will, within the limits of the EVF's resolution.

But if you take the exact same image file and display them side by side at different sizes and view both from the same distance, they will have different DoF. The larger display size will have shallower DoF, and the smaller display size will have deeper DoF.

Lens recommendations for EU trip

I want to post a belated thank you to all those who took the time to give their recommendations. I took the 6D and 5DsR bodies, and the 24-105 which was my "work horse" lens, the 70-200 f/4 and the 16-35 f/4. Due to my wife being in a wheel chair, plus managing her crutches, it wasn't practical to carry more than the 24-105 on whichever body I took off the boat. I used both the 6D and 5DsR about equally. The 6D is better at high ISO in museums from a noise standpoint, but I did have the 5DsR in the museum in Naples. I almost exclusively used the 70-200 f/4 on the ship when docked and the 5DsR, since I knew I could crop effectively. There were a few times when I wished I had the 16-35 f/4 over the widest setting of the 24-105, but it just wasn't to be. I shot 1500 photos, and will start culling and editing them over the winter. The trip was fantastic, and the five of us thoroughly enjoyed the trip. (Wife, step-son, daughter-in-law and 2.5 year old granddaughter in a stroller. Yes we had two sets of wheels to deal with.)

Anyone using external video monitor/recorders with the EOS R?

I've been getting more into video work lately, and I bought a used C100 MkI to do this. But the thing is, this camera definitely shows its age and lacks a bunch of features that the EOS R has. The C100 autofocus, even with dual pixel, is mediocre bordering on awful. You only get one AF area in the middle of the frame which may or may not actually focus on you want it to. And I supremely miss auto ISO that pretty much every stills camera for the last ten years has had.

So I'm considering moving over to the EOS R with an external recorder, probably the Atomos Shogun Flame. Is anyone using the EOS R for a lot of video work with an external recorder? How is it? Any problems with overheating during long, multi-hour video shoots?

Canon EOS R not good for action photography

Thanks Alan, I think I will.
The purpose of this thread was to post an entire sequence, as it was, good or bad, to prove a point. I think I need to adjust myself to the mirrorless camera way of shooting fast action. It's challenging but it can be done.
I started learning photography in 1990 and thinking of the cameras back then and what we have now, there's no way I'll let some minor technical specifications prevent me getting the results I want.
I can only see two possible outcomes for us:
  1. We get a new camera with a better EVF, suitable for fast motion photography
  2. I develop chameleon eyes, one to look at the subject, on to look at the screen:)
Thanks,
Nelu
My wife chops vegetables super fast with a big, heavy, sharp chopping knife. We have a drawer full of very good steak knives, but, for some reason, she doesn't use those for chopping. It would be challenging but it could be done! ;) (Again, Nelu, thank you for posting that whole sequence.)

Canon Third Quarter 2019 Financials

I was also hoping Canon would keep the EF mount but after the fact they introduced RF Mount I looked at the history of Canon and found that Canon is one of the companies that have changed SLR Lens mount very aggressively.

R Mount 1959 till 1964
FL Mount 1964 till 1971
FD Mount 1971 till 1987
EF Mount 1987 and counting
EF-S Mount 2003 and Counting
EF-M Mount 2012 and counting
RF Mount 2018 and counting

After looking at that data above I am not too surprised with Canon's decision to introduce a new mount and it makes perfect business sense because they can sell all the same FL lens again to their customers at a higher price than their EF counter parts. Something that does not makes sense to me is at this point Canon has at least 3 active mounts (EF, EF-M and RF). Obviously I am assuming EF-S is dead already. I thought Canon would kill EF-M at some point but this news says that EF-M mount cameras are number one selling cameras across the globe. So it sounds like Canon will continue with all 3 mounts and at some point they will stop producing EF lenses and RF and EF-M mount will continue as is. To me it makes sense to have a RF and a RF-S mount like EF and EF-S where people can graduate to full frame cameras and continue to use some of their RF glass but Canon obviously thinks otherwise.

FL lenses were forwards compatible with FD mount cameras, so that was more or less 1964-1987 in the same mount.

Your overall point does remain.

Canon to add 24p recording to the Canon EOS 90D, Canon EOS RP & Canon EOS M6 Mark II

The idea that "professionals" are out spending big bucks just because they are "professionals" is the silliest thing I have ever heard. Most professionals are eating hand to mouth. .
there is a very good reason why the phrase “starving artist” exists....

Canon is shutting down Irista

I was in on the beta of this service, I can't remember the name of it, but it went pretty smoothly. Once it went out of beta and they named it Irista, I had that very feeling of dread that it was going to die a quick death. Companies need to stop naming their products ridiculous names. Irista... I get it, but it's not odd or catchy enough to be memorable. After a year or so, I forgot all about it as I started to back my photos up to a local cloud.
It gets confused with Jrista, our astrophotography expert.

Big price drops on the EOS 5D Mark IV, EOS R and more

Lens prices tend to be less fluid. If memory serves me correctly, it usually takes up to a year or more before you see any kind of a reduction -- which generally comes in the form of an instant rebate. In the short term, your best bet is the Canon Price Watch street price program.

If Canon stays true to form, discounts for newly introduced lenses will be in the form of "instant rebates" that can be extended indefinitely with the listed "regular" price staying where it was for several years after introduction. I would not be at all surprised if there are no deep rebates offered in the immediate period following the release of a "pro" R body, either.

Patent: Canon is working on shrinking the size of mirrorless cameras

Bah. I remember the time right before smart phones, when the trend was towards tinier and tinier phones. But they got too small to use comfortably. Remember Derek Zoolander’s absurdly tiny phone? Then things swung back into bigger phones for the bigger and bigger working screens. Cameras are the same. Unless you need it to go in your pocket, leave it big enough to hold and to have plenty of buttons.

1DX Mark II dead at 200k

Unfortunately I've joined the broken mirror hinge club :( Not sure of my shutter count, maybe around the same as yours...sent to fix today

Well it finally happened and far earlier than expected. The mirror failed on my 1DX Mark II with 202k shutter clicks (rated for 400k).

The mirror is totally out of alignment and thus not sending the image to the AF sensors. I can still shoot in MF.

Hopefully CPS can turn this around quick as I’m heading to Denmark for the Cyclocross World Championships at the end of the month. View attachment 182747

Question on potential black friday deals for Canon EOS R

You don't want to wait and see if/when the rumoured EOS RA is coming? I had read something recently that there would be an announcement soon.
I read the note on the Ra, but I don't think it would work for my infrared purposes, as I go full spectrum. As I understood the press notice, it feels like the Ra would not be full spectrum, but closer to a 665nm mod.
