EOS R related announcements coming for CP+ [CR2]

The DiG!C 8 controls AF/metering in the 1D X Mark III in the same way that what was essentially a DiG!C 5 controlled AF/metering in the 1D X Mark II and 5D Mark IV.

For image processing, the 1D X Mark II used dual DiG!C 6+ processors. The 1D X mark III uses a single DiG!C X processor.
Not the point and really doesn't matter. More than 1 processor is used for the whole sheeeee bang. Would not the metering have to do, in part, with the total output ability? RE better DR? I don't know. Don't really care. Do you know? The point is better DR. How that is accomplished, ultimately, is pure speculation on anyone's part around these parts on the internet forum. I've said it before. I'll say it again: The tech side is not within my realm.

What is your favorite new feature of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III

Yep I understand you meant there was little room for improvement, but your post brought me to the idea that this camera will show the current limits of Canon's tech.
Canon is lagging behind in low light and dynamic range at the moment. If there's no improvement, what's the point in releasing new cameras? Right now the 1DXIII's specs seem to be only shining in autofocus and fps (in terms of the stills photography). It's a flagship with all the best tech from Canon. It probably sets the bar for what Canon has in the sensor tech department, so I'm curious to see the reviews on low light and DR.

I think Canon can potentially improve the DR by one stop or so, at least in terms of the physical limits.

But in practice I bet 1DXIII will likely have the same DR and low light performance as 1DXII.

One stop improvement at the sensor level requires doubling sensor efficiency. Everyone, including Canon, already have sensors with better than 50% efficiency.

Sports R: Why not now?

I suspect that a few years from now we might see, in hindsight, that the main purpose for many of the design decisions Canon made regarding the 1D X Mark III were not motivated by the desire to produce the ultimate sports/action DSLR as a last hurrah, but rather by the strategy to use the 1D X Mark III as a test bed for the systems Canon planned to use in upcoming pro-grade mirrorless bodies.

Patent: Large LCD equipped mirrorless camera

OK I get your point about pairing wanting improvement but no, putting Android into a camera is a truly horrific idea. Android is only slightly less worse than iOS in terms of user control over the device. Ever try to install your own new version of Android on a smart phone after the manufacturer moved on to new models and no longer provides updates? Talk about an exercise in nightmares. And then there's the bloatware; the last thing we need is a camera that has built in (uninstallable) facebook/twitter/instagram/wechat/snapchat/tumblr/weibo clients.

I don't think any of these are serious concerns.

Firstly, as I said Android would have to be a dual OS that you'd choose to boot into as and when you need it. If it comes to a point in five years or more time when this specific version of Android is no longer supported by Google for security updates and Canon has also stopped providing updates you could simply chose not to start Android on it and keep it running within the standard Canon OS.

I don't think installing a custom version of Android on a phone is any harder than installing a custom firmware (eg magic lantern) on a camera. And for the same reasons that's something only 1% of people would do.

I don't know any phone (at least not from a reputable source) that has unstallable facebook/twitter/instagram/wechat etc clients. I know that if Canon are expecting this new format to take off they'd be very aware of how such things would look to reviewers so I'd be pretty certain that the only uninstallable stuff on there would be the stuff that is directly required to integrate with the camera.

And maybe the camera only needs one card slot if it can sync photos with your Amazon Photos/Google Photos/Dropbox etc on the fly in the background :)

My one concern about this idea, and something that could kill the android idea dead, is the ergonomics of using an on-screen keyboard with it - especially if a heavy lens is attached!

AFMA of long lenses

I have found it difficult to discern differences by eye, perhaps due to my vision. However, I've manually done a AFMA by eye in the field and had surpurb results, thats a exception. I use Focal outdoors. I'm probably on my last paid version of it, since I don't plan on getting a new EF based body or lenses, it will do the equipment I have.
If you use the manual method you don't have to update your version of FoCal.

Review: Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III USM

I heard they were going to release an at-home conversion kit...

Seriously though I just don't get this anti-adapter mania. I guess people just decided that adapters were bad from the experience of adapting Canon glass onto Sony cameras, which is a legitimate stance to have. It has always been a crapshoot to adapt one manufactuer's lens onto another manufacturer's body using a third manufacturer's adapter.

But I've used the RF adapter since it came out and it's flawless. Seriously if you want this lens "converted" to RF, but the adapter on, and tape off the joint between the adapter and lens to seal it up from any possibility of water getting past the seal.
Amazing I get quoted 11 months after!

RF 24-70 f2.8 L IS vs EF 24-70 f2.8 LII - both on EOS R

RF lenses will not work on the 5D mark IV, so your decision is easy, you need to get the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II :) To make use of the RF 24-70 f/2.8L IS, you would need to buy an RF mount camera (currently your choices are the EOS R and the EOS RP) as well.

Hope that helps!

thank you jd7! Definitely makes for a much easier choice! I appreciate the reply!

Hands-on with the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III

One thing he doesn't like
It's still a very big and heavy camera. This is obviously great for stability, durability etc however I'm very much sick of pulling my neck and back because of the weight of the 1D series.
He's ageing but not as old as me yet! I'd love something with the AF capability of the 1D series, but I could not consider the weight.
Heavy the EOS 1 D ????
Ever tried a film era Leicaflex SL Mot ? You'd need (me too) a crane to lift it !;)

EOS R

Dear All,

I have a question about the IS build in the lens used on a EOS R. I noticed that the IS (Image Stabilisation) is continue on when the camera is on. Normally the IS is on when the shutter release button is pressed and about 4 secondes more at DSRL cameras. In the manual it is also told on page 143(Dutch) that the IS is continue on? Who knows why Canon did this?

Focus Camera store website hacked

I stopped accepting credit cards for my small business and switched most of my sales to Amazon where they take care of hacking issues and payments. I could have been wiped out from legal fees if my small business web site were hacked and had to spend a lot of time keeping up to date on the exploits. I prevented lots of attacks, in the end, it was too stressful for a relatively small business. I have no idea of how much of my Amazon fees goes to dealing with hacking losses, but they charge me plenty. Same with Paypal.

Tamron 35-150 F2.8-4 Di

My friend has one, I have heard only a few tidbits but he loves it on his 6D2 and not so much on his 60D. imho, it's a great FF focal zoom length. Not everyone goes super wide or long as I for one am mostly a 24-135 shooter. As for quality, I'd look at Bryans review on TDP. Tammy's have come a long way, especially the G2's. I'm not hesitant about them myself any longer.
