The Canon EOS Rebel SL3/200D II/250D/Kiss X10 is coming very soon. Images & specifications leak ahead of the official announcement

Is the price tag of the USB 3 license fee that much higher than the USB2? I understand that this is the cheapest you can get... But come on! This is 10 year old tech. It's almost time to replace it. And Canon is still offering USB2 along 4K and mini HDMI. It is INSANE!

I've heard that they have implemented both cr2 and cr3. If that is true that would be awesome so one could check the true benefits of cr3 format.

Upcoming rumored cameras

My thoughts:

EOS RP will be available for 999 come Black Friday
Don't think Canon will bring a lower-priced / lower specced FF MILC anytime soon.
I don't expect them to ever bring APS-C sensored R model/s
Next in R series will be a hi-rez EOS "RS" - 5Ds/R replacement, possibly August announcement
Then, just in time for 2020 Tokyo Olympics a duo of 1DX III (DSLR) and EOS "RX-1" -> Sony A9 (II) competitor. They can and will not leave mirrofree FF sports segment to Sony. And there are probably still enough conservative DSLR friends around in that segment to warrant 1DX III, but it will be the "final" DSLR.
Also in 2020 i expect a EOS "R Mk. II" - specced like and instead of a 5D V

APS-C:
next up M5 II - Fuji XT-3 level, but lower price, maybe aggressive 999 body only
possibly also an "M7" - as a "best in class, fast fps APS-C MILC", instead of 7D III
then "M50 II" or similar plus "M110" entry level, since it is Canon, there might be 5 different models, ever so tightly mico-marketing-differentiated, some also available in colors like piglet pink, fake gold, street-snow white and puke-yellow :)

Another weather sealed decent performer from Samyang/Walimex/Rokinon for RF- (and Nikon Z-)Mount: the MF 14mm f2.8

By coincidence, lenrentals https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/04/just-mtf-charts-rokinon-samyang-lenses/ reported last night the MTFs and sample variation of Rokinon lenses - they have the most variable quality of all; the good can be very good and the bad are awful.
The Sigma 14mm f/1.8 is far, far sharper at f/1.8 than the Rokinon is at f/2.8 as is the Canon 14mm f/2.8 II at f/2.8. https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/04/just-mtf-charts-sigma-prime-lenses/ https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/03/just-mtf-charts-canon-prime-lenses/
But, the Rokinon is much, much cheaper.
I got one of the very awful a few years ago. I've never seen a poorer lens, no matter the brand or price. When someone lucks out and gets a good one and proclaims how wonderful they are, I know how bad they can be as well.

Is a brand new 32.5mp APS-C sensor from Canon on the way? [CR1]

Here's how I dealt with seeing the non-flippy screen on my cameras during the eclipse: foam board with holes cut just the right size to slide them onto the lens (from the rear before attaching it to the camera).

I'll think about that if I head to Dallas in 2024, I think it is. There will probably be fun stuff going on on the SMU campus, where I went to grad school.

As it was, even with the flippy screen shaded by the camera, it was hard to see. I sent the friend I had come with back to the car to get a black umbrella. He eventually got back, after chatting with a radio crew and a woman who had come from France. And I could see decently well as long as he was patient enough to hold the umbrella. My first few pictures were not usable. I posted some of them and an assembled video at http://www.stevelee.name/eclipse/index.html

If I had not practiced on the sun a few days before, I could not have done much during the eclipse. I had to deal with the realization that to photograph the sun, one has to be out in bright sunlight. The flippy screen helped, but moving the camera to keep the sun in view was harder, because the direction of movement was uncoordinated with how it appeared on the angled screen.

Antarctic Photo Tours- Recommendations/Experiences Please?

And also. Book the longest trip you can afford. If you get one that only gives 4 days on the peninsula then bad weather could shorten that down to very little. O e that has at least 8-10 days of landing is preferable as it allows for weather to change. And while i didn't do it(this time) everyone says an itinerary with south Georgia is incredible.

Patent: Canon RF 28mm f/1.8 & RF 50mm f/1.8

It cuts both ways: a 28mm can kind of almost sort of just about do the job of a 16-35, if not quite a 50. From like 1998 to 2001 my "always in the backpack" outfit was a Contax G2 with 28, 45, and 90 and I never found myself wishing I had something wider than 28, even though I shot with the 14mm a lot on the Canon. Also never needed something between 28 and 45.
I agree about the 28mm, and I still have the EF 28 IS f2.8 that I got the year before the 16-35 f4 came out. Having the 16-35, I have come to really like having the 16mm and 20mm focal lengths there when I want them, along with the 28mm. Often, I'll take along the 85 f1.8 to add some length to the 16-35, and deal with the gap by zooming with my feet, maybe with a little cropping. It's a lot easier to crop than it is to uncrop what comes out of the camera. Of course, it has been quite a while since I carried my camera equipment very far in a back pack.

All new 24mp sensor coming to the next Canon ILC’s [CR1]

I suggest we let the discussion end at this point with a mutual agreement to disagree...but instead merely that you go on happily with the view that AA-filters do not slightly blur images and I take the opposite view that they do slightly blur

You could have said 'let's agree to disagree' without intentionally misrepresenting what I've said. Sad...

Went back to using a 5D MkIV after 6 months of the EOS R... It feels antiquated

My EOS R gets virtually all of my use, I used it yesterday for a few dozen shots. I have big hands, and constantly have issues with the camera focusing on the wrong place. Its due to the fact that my thumb touches the top right corner of the screen easily, so the camera focus spot is wrong. I really wish that it required a double tap to move the af spot. I use the touch screen almost exclusively, so I don't want to turn it off.

I find my 5D MK IV to be much superior, but the R is convenient to have sitting on my desk because I can charge it once a week over usb C and it takes up less space. However, for a fast shot, I could get garbage if I don't stop and make sure the AF point is centered or wherever I want it. I usually press the delete button (Trash can symbol) to center it so at least I have the right starting place.

I might experiment with taping something raised to the top right corner of the lcd to keep my thumb off of it.
Point well made. I have the same problem on my M50. A double tap system to change the focus point on screen makes a lot of sense and would thus eliminate accidental touch focus point issues.

Patent: Canon RF 70-200mm f/4

Fantastic if that's the case - I take it the IS elements can be added later and don't need to be patented along with the rest of the formula?

the 28mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.8 definitely mention the IS element.
this patent was really about the dual auto focus motors and related logic surrounding that, it didn't go into much detail of the lens design.

Canon engineers talk all things RF, DS and DO

That sort of feedback makes me wonder if the way to go is M50 + 22/2 or SL2 + 24pancake.

The EF-M 22 is a beautiful lens. Get the new M5 mark II when it comes out, get the EF-M 22, the EF-M 32 and the EF-M 11-22 as and when you can afford them - and I'd add on soemthing like the EF 70-200 f/4 with the EF-M-EF adaptor for reach.

MISSING MAX TELEPHOTO?

whatever happened to the rumors Canon had a competitor to the Sigma/Tamron 150-600, Nikon 200-500 "reasonably" priced zoom coming?
Those rumors may be like the rumors of the 100-400 MkII...remaining rainbow-farting unicorn for many years, until they weren’t. I think a CR2 rumor of the 100-400 II was posted back when CR was sent out via snail mail. :p

Canon closing Jamesburg, NJ Service Center

Oh bummer! I'm only 40 minutes from Jamesburg and have been dropping off my gear for repair for the past 15+ years. It was really nice to speak to someone in person also. They never charged me even with gear years out of warranty. Turn around time was 3 days and I'm not even a CPS member.

I know Toshio received some of the overflow from the repair center. I hope he stays in business. He's near Jamesburg (right on the way in fact for me) and fixed my 17-40mm f4 lens that Canon could not.

It looks like firmware v1.2.0 for the Canon EOS R will be released on April 18, 2019

These are not radical features like “apps on my camera!” I am suggesting here. It’s definitely possible to have both neat features and reliability, after all, MANY OF THESE FEATURES ARE ALREADY IN OTHER CANON MODELS.
And they will be released as time goes on. :) The main thing is getting the new mount sorted. Other things will come through Firmware updates.

Patent: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 with apodization filter

Interesting comments.

I have been shooting with the 50 1.4 for about 8 years, exclusively at 2.8. At that aperture, I have experienced none of the image quality concerns that permeate these comments. Mine is very sharp...it took four copies to land on my current version. However, once i go below 2.8, the AF pretty much goes to hell. And at 1.4, the image is a haze.

And i also own a 35 f2 IS- that was nicely fixed up by canon after being sold a broken lens. Um, yeah, my 50 is better than the new model 35 in both sharpness and bokeh. Boken for the 35 is not one its strong points- it is rakish at best, and oof trees and shrubbery can look pretty horrible at times.

That said I am curious why canon has not updated the optical formula for this, the 85 18 (and its UGLY purple hazey, wide open images). They have put in a ton of work for an L version, while the normal version lingers. The forums + customers for years have been begging for an update, and...nothing. 20 years old formula....it's just crazy.
