LOOKING FOR FLASH DOME - HARD TO FIND

I never say trust me.. I never do.. but:

trust me, this is the most reasonable option for a run and gun situation as it is super light, allows you to shape your light as you pleased, and does not make the camera handling unwieldy. unless there is a nice and white ceiling 8 to 11 feet overhead ;)

The best technique to capture a wedding photo?

Hi Neuro.
Thanks for that, side splitting funny, I have read many of Roger’s posts, but that one had passed me by and has to be one of his best!

Cheers, Graham.

Sorry, but...seriously?

For starters, I'd recommend reading Roger's apparently relevant blog post:

What should I replace my 7D II with?

Naturally the 1DX2 would be my preferred choice - but they are pricey!

Have you considered the 1DX Mk1? Currently I use a 7D2 and 1DX (Mk1) and for the majority of the time the 1Dx is the better camera by a significant margin. Note I am very focal length limited as Canon do not currently make a longer lens than the one I have. Yet, despite the lack of pixel density and wider field of view it outperforms my 7D2 in all but ideal conditions. As to the AF? It is a no brainer the 1DX is just better - a lot better.

The 1DX Mk1 is not silly money these days - just food for thought?

RF 200 ?

What do you mean by bread and butter lenses btw?
He probably means lenses that are not going to cost $7,000 and sell very few copies... except for the big tele lenses for birding and sports. A RF 70-200mm IS f/2.8L would be a bread and butter lens, also a 135mm and true macro lenses. Then there's the non-L lenses. I don't mean to speak for you, Mr. Spokane, that's just my interpretation of what I think you were saying. No disrespect intended. I hold your experience and knowledge in high esteem. I have learned a lot from many of your posts.

Claimed Breakthrough Solution to Spherical Aberration in Lens Design

But doesn't that mean that one needs to reshape the lens surfaces in order to refocus the lens? Hardly feasible for general photography.

Also, the illustrations in the article suggest that the formula might not be suitable for off-axis objects.
Sorry for the late reply, I have the same impression like you. But I can imagine that intelligent optical elements made of flexible materials (like the lenses in our eyes) may utilize such a formula even for bigger lenses. On the other side, I am pretty sure that algorithms that control the shape of such a lens will most probably based on numerical mathematics, not such an attempt to tackle that problem analytically.

Another approach is to correct all types aberrations during post-processing, as it is already done with chromatic aberrations since many years. That's the most probable approach IMO, because it allows for simpler and cheaper lens designs.

Firmware: Canon EOS 80D v1.0.3

While all very witty, this is a real potential problem that is good to have fixed for some people. Canon's Hong Kong local site has a longer explanation: https://hk.canon/en/support/security-advisory-ptp-communication-and-firmware-functions/notice
Notice that if one has an 80D connected live to a smartphone / tablet / laptop and trying to beam out pictures of protests, etc, then state security has the resources to pull off this kind of hack and see what one is recording. Same for similar places around the globe. So yeah, good patch.
Still an utter fringe nano scale problem. Rather had a small functionality update upgrade.

A new EOS Rebel is coming this month, possibly an EOS Rebel T8i or entry level EOS M camera[CR1]

Nobody disputes that 1080P televisions were an excellent entry point into watching TV 10 years ago. But today, in 2019 they are simply totally antiquated tech and 4K/8K TVs are the only thing TV makers need to offer to get new buyers into their ecosystem and retain market leadership.

See how silly that sounds?
actually... you got me there for a second! until I read the last bit being: See how silly that sounds? phew.... :D

The RF mount “Holy Trinity” should be ready to ship before the end of July 2019 [CR2]

Maybe that’s normal in Canon’s world. But it’s messed up. Disney announces their new service is launching in November and it launches in November. Apple does the same. Most successful companies do. Why Canon has apparently strategically developed a reputation for announcing things consistently earlier than they come out suggests a very high level of incompetent leadership. The buyers of their products are, no doubt, their biggest fans. They should be embracing this fan base by providing updates on news flow and accurate estimates for releases. Whether it’s the hold trinity of 2.8 or the possibility of a 2.0, their fans want to know and plan for those releases. And it’s not like holding back that information gives their competition any advantage. Half of buying a brand is the brand, not the underlying product. They should do s better job building the reputation of their brand.
People insist on treating rumored release dates as Canon promises. So far as I know Canon has only said that the RF trinity will be out by the end of the year. I don't think Canon has announced release dates for any new F2.0 zooms. Sort of silly to hold Canon responsible for rumors that don't pan out or unfulfilled wishes.

Canon R experience

I didn’t want a new thread just for this question, so hope it’s okay to post it here:

Is there a way to edit the touch-menu in Live View?

The iso in the bottom right corner is getting touched and set to a specific iso value when I want auto-iso all the time. Accidentally touching when carrying the camera.
Edit on this:

I did find a way, I turned off the “buttons on screen” and instead of having the SET-button to “activate/deactivate touch-functions” I assigned it to Q-menu (since that disappeared from the buttons on screen)

Selling gear

That's a very good and fair question. To go to something that I think suits my individual needs better.. .

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I was a little surprised to learn you were dumping all your lenses, especially the 70-200, but obviously you've thought this through. I will say that the more I use the R the more I like it (although not so sure about the control bar thingy). Me, I'm not ready to dump the DSLR quite yet, but can see how future purchases might not be in the DSLR format -- depending on what Canon does with the "R1x" body. As for my EF lenses, I will hold on to them and defer R lens purchases until I see how things shake out.

Thanks.

The follow-up to the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II may come in 2019 [CR2]

Hi all, I am not so interested (yet) in the EOS R as I think Canon technology is not yet so mature. I am more interest in a replacement of the EOS 5D Mark IV possible.
I am wondering if anything think that by April 2020 anything concrete will appear in shops (I mean ready to buy, NOT just rumors or announcement for later release).
Thanks in advance.
Andrea
OK , so where are the clairvoyants in our group when we need them?! ;) I can recall one who makes great claims but they never materialize. :(
