Basic questions about shooting in low light

Hi Neuro.
I like the BEAU mode, took a few seconds before I spotted the small print.
I thought P or even [] were the settings suggested to catch fleeing ladders (a thread a long time ago involving blown evidence shots)? The "camera will always get a shot" settings though not what you might use for more considered shots.

Cheers, Graham.

My biggest fear of M mode is that someday I will see bigfoot running away, grab the camera and click off a few shots, only to realize after he is gone I am 7 or 8 stops under or over exposed. In my excitement and haste I had once again forgot to adjust the settings.

That's why I recommend setting up C3 as your BEAU* Mode – settings along the lines of 1/500 s, f/5.6, and Auto ISO. Then, it's a spin of the dial to the end, and you won't miss the shot.

Got me a ride in one of these...

Hi Mike.
Fabulous, the sort of thing I would love to do.
Years ago we were in Arizona and went to lake pleasant, took a trip with Arizona Ducks (DUKWs) on the lake, they let us all have a go in the drivers seat, I was up last and had over half the trip steering it, following the captains instructions. He did get back in the seat quite quick after I asked "so what do I have to do to now I'm approaching the ramp, engage the wheel drive?" I will see if I have any shots from that trip and post one if that is ok.
That was a great experience, and sadly the next year when we went back they had gone, I think it was the year after one sunk, may have been on the River Thames. Gave them all a bad reputation. :'(

Cheers, Graham.

Any one had a ride in unusual transport?

On a recent holiday we had a rise in a Grumman Goose (Pacific Coastal Airlines, BC). We took off from tarmac and landed on a fjord - quite a different experience to other seaplanes we have been on. As you will see, the wing pontoon lifts up to enable it to get to the dock.

Fuji announces medium format mirrorless range

not interested. too big, way too expensive and most likely not much IQ advantage over 50 MP 36x24 sensor systems.

why fuji decided to go into tiny MF market that is an all-out battle for survival between several established suppliers already ... no idea. i would have loved to see a leading edge, ultra compact mirrorless FF sensor system from Fuji instead (with X-Trans) - competing with Sony A7/R II.

MF? wake me up, once something like a compact, slim digital Mamyia 7 II (rangefinder-form factor) comes out, with a a true 6x7 sensor ... at USD/€ 4999 or less.

Hey, AvTvM, I've just realised what camera you want, no mirror, small and light, no moving part an' all: the iPhone 6 !

5D MK IV, memory card for 4k

Took some first 4k videos before returning for GPS repair. Filming my great-grandchildren was a pleasure.

SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC 64GB UHS-II card worked well, the SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC 64GB UHS-I/Class 10 stopped recording after 2-3 minutes. Do not know, why the UHS II Did not stop.
No problems with SanDisk CF Extreme PRO 64GB 160MB/s.
The Lexar CF Professional UDMA 1066x 64GB from my 7DII worked fine, there was one stop in videorecording after some minutes.

Explain 5Div GPS to me

By the way:
What is the third clock you mentioned inside the body?

Edit: I did a quick search in the 5D4 manual, didn't find any "third clock" but an "Auto-update" function for synchronizing the internal clock with the GPS clock. Refer to the GPS chapter and/or the GPS menu of the camera.

Thanks!

I'm talking about clocks between bodies. So I have three cameras it total, 2 for me and another for my second. I was hoping the GPS would update the in camera clock.
Got it.
As I wrote: you can activate a clock sync to GPS according to the GPS chapter and/or the GPS menu of the camera.
If that doesn't work with several bodies with GPS (of the same type) I'd be puzzled, too.

3 photos in one raw file: Need help/advice

What raw converter are you using? It could be possible that as third party raw converters have to reverse engineer Canons proprietary raw format in much the same way that third party lens manufacturers have to reverse engineer lens to body communications, occiasional problems could occur. I've never heard of this before, but it could be worth trying another raw converter, with Canons own DPP being the favoured option.

oops, I meant 1.2 kg or 2.64lb heavier. To be fair, with the new Sigma dock, the lens should be reprogrammable.

Edit after price announcement: the Sigma 500/4 is hardly cheaper than the 400mm DO II.
It is about 0.1 Kg heavier than the Canon 500/4 II. I would get Canon over Sigma any day (oh wait I do have it ;D ) Still 400 DO II is fantastic with 7D2 :)

I've just ordered a 7D2 for my walk about bird sessions to go with my 500/4ii. I have a good feeling about the crop body after getting some great results with my girls 1200D. (and cheap compared to a 1DX2/5D4 etc)

Used ones also seem to be showing up now at pretty decent prices. Might be worth considering as a back-up for sure. Were the issues that many complained about largely from early adopters?

Jack

I got a brand new 7D2 (3 Yr 3rd party guarantee), Canon grip, second LP-E6N, 64GB SD and a 64GB CF all for £1300.00 UK Pounds, I am looking forward to getting out with it and the 500/4ii as well as my 70-200ii and 100-400ii, I think it will boost my images IQ as I will be able to loose the x1.4iii and x2.0iii more so given the 7D2's native x1.6 crop factor, plus I don't loose stops of light, the 7D2 has built up quite a show of fantastic images all over the net some of are shown right here, (great images by the way people!). When I think about my kit bag having a crop body on the side has a great deal to offer, its like a whole new line up of glass!

I don't know of any current issues now in regard to focus and other niggles reported in the early days of the 7D2, I think more than enough time has passed that now is a great time to buy imo (price, probs, firmware and so on).

Here in Canada Canon has it on sale for $1800 CAD (1368 USD) so it is tempting.

However, there is never unanimity on the 1.6 reach advantage vs 1.4X extender.

Jack

No I know, it's always a trade off one way or another, I hope to get some good results at 1120mm as well as 800mm, will have some shots end of week, will post a few up in the bird sections. :)
Just make sure you use AFMA. I had to do that with my 7D2 + 500 II and 7D2 + 500 II + 1.4III
I had success with 7D2 + 500 II handheld and less success with 7D2 + 500 II + 1.4III. For the later combination I used tripod and my keepers increased a lot.

...Canon is usually pretty good, but their pricing is win some/lose some - outrageous for minor repairs and a steal for major repairs because they tend to charge one price for each item, or so it seems.

I found that out. The only item I've ever needed repaired by Canon (not counting the 1D X recall) was my EOS M which just died for no apparent reason. Their fixed cost repair was apparently based on the retail price before the fire sale, and was the same cost as buying as a new EOS M on Amazon (this was after the M3 came out), and $20 less than a new imported M2. I bought the M2.
Yikes, that's pretty brutal! I've been a better *cough* customer. 2 x 400mm f/5.6 hood replacements, dropped TS-E 24mm filter thread repair, 1D X top plate rust replacement, 135mm f/2 realignment/calibration from drop, 60D screen replacement, and at least one more.

The repairs ranged from about $160-460 each if memory serves...unfortunately a few of these happened at the same time.

Review: Canon EOS 5D Mark IV by DPReview

It's not reproducable unfortunately. As with the A7R2, it needs a hotter environment like outdoors with 30 degrees celsius, or an indoor stage event with higher temperature. This never happened with my GH4s or 1DC and also not 1DX2, probably because of bigger bodies or smaller sensor.

In any event Canon - like the dxo sensor rating shows - mainly keeps up with the competitor achievments those released 1.5-2.5 years ago (except dualpixel focus technology which is better). This is sad because with Canon it always feels like as if they are artificially holding back features and quality they easily could have released yet. Sony products feel as if they release the best they can.

The 5D4 video mainly has the quality, specs and functions of the 1DC from Photokina 4 years ago - minus C-Log and minus lowlight capabilities. That is not what someone would call innovation.

"Video is, of course, also a big deal. The [SONY] a99 II [announced today] can capture 4K at 100Mbps (using XAVC S) with full sensor read-out and no pixel binning. A Super 35 option is also available, with 1.8x oversampling. A 'Slow and Quick' mode lets users jump between 1 and 120 fps at the push of a button. All of the capture tools you'd expect are available, including zebra patterns, time code, S-Log2 and S-Log3 profiles and [4k - 5D4 only does 1080P over HDMI because supposedly Canon planned the 5D4 a long time ago when 4k HDMI parts did not yet exist, funny though that cameras that come out a year earlier had the arts, it's probably because Canon execs only at the last second agreed to 'dare' allow 4k in a consumer camera, at which point they had already settled on some old chips?? or maybe more market segmentation nonsense] 4:2:2 output over HDMI. [Stills are 8fps at 42MP or 12fps depending upon mode.]"
Any reason why Sony has limitations with live view tracking vs faster aperture in video and stills.

Panasonic Developing GH5 With 4K 60p/50p Video Recording

CanoKnight said:
4k / 60p = drool .. Now you know why I held off on buying the 5d4. In terms of video the 5d4 is a joke (Only 1080p through hdmi.. are you serious ? ). Indies have been waiting for the GH5 and for good reason.

I bought a brand new 5D3 from ebay a few months ago (using a link from CR to do my bit to support the site : ), and I already have a 7d2. I don't need any more Canon cameras. But I can see a GH5 in my future.

It is not only the 5d4 that is joke in terms of video:)

5D Mark III AF Expectations (Or any other camera)

At 100%, details can still be crisp and sharp. If they're not, for many people, its not a big problem. But for you, it sounds like it might be.

A few points to consider: -

1. If the subject is small, make sure you're using the appropriate AF point and not focusing and recomposing;

2. If you're shooting soccer, birds, anything else that moves NEVER shoot slower than 1/1500s. Aim for 1/2000 or faster. Get that ISO up as high as needs to be.

3. Just because you can shoot a lens wide open, it doesn't mean that you should. A smaller aperture will give you more in focus.

4. When in doubt, use Liveview AF. It is more accurate.
