Alleged 30 MP 5DIV - 6D II 24 MP?

The Nikon D600/D610 dating back to 2012 has 39-point AF system, with the central 9 points cross-type. The Nikon D750 51 focus points (including 15 cross-type sensors; f/8 supported by 11 sensors) dating from 2014.

So 19 AF points in the 6D MKII would certainly not cut it, period.

Nope. That 45 point system would be just fine though

Canon Professional Services Keeps Professional Sports Photographers Ready For Action

So tell me how Canon CPS fails in comparison to Sony and Panasonic? Nikon ain't too hot, either from what I've heard.

Canon just fails. It's $500- USD for the membership I had. For that amount of money plus the amount I spend on lenses, bodies and paying to still use their pro service for repairs that aren't correct I would say that is a good starting point. Im not saying anyone else is better. Better products? Maybe? Listen to their consumers more? Definitely!!!!! Listen to working professionals about that they want in future cameras? Definitely? Know how to keep customers? I don't know because I have never had a beef with any other company where I needed help on a professional level for an additional service I payed a premium for. All I can tell you is that the CPS program did not live up to the standards. What they should of done was refunded my my $500- for a failed service. They should of over nighted me a loaner body since a standard sensor clean rendered my body un usable. There are a lot of things a huge company can do to keep a customer. That $300- in a loaner camera & fedex cost them probably 100K over the next 5-10 years. Not a big deal to Canon but these reviews matter. I'm just letting you know about my experience with Canon as a working professional that makes my living from my cameras.

C300 Mark 2 = FAIL - FS7 6K cheaper and shoots 4K 60 FPS. I mean where do I even start with this brand. It's like the Japan earthquake knocked all the sense out of the developers too!

Cant wait for the 5D lol - watch 4K, 30fps, no C LOG, 8 Bit if our lucky internal, probably a lame codek and it won't be full frame 4k... Dying over here. People stuck on a name.

I am not doubting that they failed in this case, just questioning your assertion that Panasonic and Sony provide better service.
I would say Canon has an excellent history of listening to what working professionals want - and while pros want a myriad of different things I would say Canon is particularly good at prioritising developments so they concentrate on what truly makes a difference not what every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks is funky.

What I can't understand is why you are with Canon at all if they have such an apalling history.

That $300- in a loaner camera & fedex cost them probably 100K over the next 5-10 years.
That's some assertion. Are you saying you would spend 10-20k a year with canon?
Good luck with your (not too far in the) future Nikon/Panasonic/Sony. Let us know how it works out.

Maybe we really can't have it all...

Nice shots, Sporgon. I like the first one.

I agree, great shots, and especially the first one!

Thanks Luds. With EF lenses the M3 can certainly track subjects coming towards you much better than the 5D / 5DII. ( I know that's not saying much). Probably similar to the 6D, large AF area not withstanding. It would be even better with the dedicated m lenses, but they are too slow for crop to claw back its shallow DOF disadvantage.

I'm just so in love with my 80d.

Take your 80D. You'll get better pictures using a camera that you enjoy using.

DPreview compares 80D with Sony A6300

I read it and as an Canonian, I can´t agree in some points to their opinion.
My grandson´s wife owns the A6300 and she uses it a lot of time in family shootings of their children. They are quite agile and a lot of shots are not sharp at all. But the 80D´s are. I rented it for a weekend from my local camera shop for deciding if I would buy it.
And the AF is very good. AND: You can use the 80D with my 100-400mm Canon II and 1.4x extender on it. The AF does not work on their 70-400mm lens as propriate as the Canons´s did. And it is rather hard to switch the AF point on the A6300 fast. Here the 80D is much better and more agile. And I was not able to use the 1.4 extender on the 70-400...

Question on live view focus vs viewfinder AF and micro focus adjustment re 80D

Hi Scott, obviously the answer is to have Canon fix it, I suppose i'm just trying to eliminate human error first and know I have a case...

I just have to check one more thing and that is the stronger AA filter on the 80d, which I didn't know about, mentioned by StudentOfLight...so once again I will take a few comparison shots and have another critical look...

If you are as technologically backward as I am then you have to make sure of your facts first.... :)

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV to be Announced August 25, 2016 [CR3]

If announcement date is August 25, 2016. When is likely release/availability date?

Given Canon's track record a week or two (at the most). Availability may be limited though in the beginning (this sometimes happens) even if I expect they will have all the 5DIV's you want ready in stock.

Assuming you're asking the question about the US or Europe (not Asia), once announced the cameras will be in short supply for a few months until local inventory catches up.

Most likely, Canon will air freight the initial (small) batches to their warehouse right before the announcement. Then, once the 'cone of silence' has been broken, they can ship large quantities by sea (container, ship much cheaper than air).

But remember, a shipping container from Japan takes approximately 18 days to get to the US in summer (good weather), and longer to Europe. In winter that can double (or worse).

A standard container ship travels at 15 knots in good weather, slower in bad. It is approximately 6000 nautical miles from Japan to Los Angeles (the usual container port on the US west coast). Do the math.

Those toys you buy in early December for your kids for Christmas? They were shipped in June (or earlier).

A really excellent book is "The Box", which is the history of the development of the shipping container. It is a fascinating read, and it explains how drastically the world was changed by this innovation (you'll never look at the movie "On the Waterfront" the same after reading 'The Box').

EOS 80D RAW noise - some thoughts/observations

Thanks I had a look at the chart.....I haven't compared 100iso and such just because I have gotten so used to shooting at 400 to 1600 with my 6d....even commercial jobs with nary a care or worry about noise....

For now I have a huge image sharpness problem with my 80 d and I think I may have a faulty camera or I am doing something really stupid!

5Dm3 in camera crop

DCP said:
How do you get it to show up as example 16:9 on the computer, any browser, PS LR anything and all still show it at native 3:2. I thought there was a way to set it in camera at say 16:9, then in photoshop it would automatically show it as it was set in camera? Any help on this would be much appreciated.

In the 5D3, only JPEGs are actually cropped. RAWs still contains the whole 3:2 data, and only metadata tell the shooting aspect ratio - but the software must be able to understand them. DPR probably does (never tried), but LR/PS may not.

Advice for In-Camera Stabilization Body

My take is that is doesn't work nearly as well for long telephoto lenses as in lens IS, and for a old lens, it will be worse.

Unless you have some very expensive old telephoto glass, buying a FF mirrorless just to use it with poor IS is a waste of $$. You might sell your old lenses and buy modern ones and along with the money saved from buying another body, you could get a really nice lens.

If you want a mirrorless camera for some other reason, and just want to spend the money to play with the old lenses, I'd chose the camera based on the features you need for it, and not by how well it adapts IS to old glass.

Review - Do You Need or Want 50mp? Canon EOS 5DS R

My own experience with a 5DSR and a 5DIII is that the ISO performance of the 5D III is better.
The noise in the 5DIII is easier to clean up.
I don't like the noise in my 5DSR at all. It's similar to the noise in the 7DII.
It seems to me to be more blotchy.
Canon themselves by default restrict the ISO on the 5DSR as they must think beyond the default point the noise is not something they want to show off.
If you are shooting RAW there's a solution to your challenges so you can get more out of your 5DS/R pictures.

What program are you using and how do you deal with noise? And if you use LightRoom are you using Adobe's standard color profile?

I can never remember what color space I'm using but I'd assume it is Adobe's Standard Color profile. Yes I'd be interested in any tips.

OK. This is likely your problem. And its easily fixed.

Sadly, Adobe default color space for the 5DS/R is broken. It will crunch your blacks and overblow your whites. I promise you that just changing this in LR will improve your pictures a lot.

I have posted some samples here that show how big a difference changing the color profile makes: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/57099728

I'm not quite sure why Adobe did not change it altogether. They did make a fix however. I have my own color profile and you can find several out there for free if you google them.

But to keep things easy I suggest you either use Adobe's own "Neutral" color profile (free download) or check out Horshack's customs profile's (freebee also) which many consider better because Adobe's are slightly flat in the colors - and I agree with this. There's also Huelight's profiles (15$) taking a small fee for a vast improvement:

Horshack: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/56156685

Huelight: http://www.colorfidelity.com/canon.htm

Adobe's atempt is here with steps for installation (beware there is a difference between profiles for the 5DS and 5DS/R): https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1872272

Try it out with a few of your pictures at first - it should at least take away the "blotchiness" - and do come back here if noise is still not as good as you would like it to be.

Looking for Monopod recommendations that fold down to 14 inches or less

I had never considered a folding Monopod, I've always used telescoping ones.

However, I did find a folding one that folds to 9.85 inches.

Size:

55 x 55 x 250mm / 2.17 x 2.17 x 9.85inch (Close)
39 x 39 x 1270mm / 1.54 x 1.54x 50inch (Extends)

Travel Insurance for gear- Suggestions for which is best?

I see two options - I have State Farm. I am NOT a pro so my rates are lower than if I used my gear to earn a living.

1. I schedule my gear. All risks are covered including my stupidity. If drop an item or leave it on the plane, it is covered. Costs around $1.25 to $1.50 per $100 per year. No deductible. I wish there was as I will not file a claim for a few hundred dollars.

2. Home owners covers most of my items. Protects against theft, fire, .. but not against my stupidity or bad luck. I believe this coverage is both inside and outside the house. There is a deductible.

Check with your home owner insurance agent or you can get camera insurance independent of home owner's insurance - check with any photo organize you are member of. Might even join one to get insurance.
