Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Video Frame Rate Options

There's lots of very enticing things about this camera. But as far as video goes I have to wait for the reviews. I was thinking perhaps this camera could fit in with the other video stuff we do. I have to see what people say about Canon's implementation of Motion JPEG and how they were able to grade the color and so on. Perhaps we can get some sample files to work with. As usual, the devil is in the details.

Eagles used to take out Drones!

expatinasia said:
Hats off to the Dutch, what a clever idea!

As part of a new trial, the Dutch National Police force has begun training eagles to intercept troublesome drones during an emergency, when another capture device might put people below at risk.

Read more here:

http://www.engadget.com/2016/02/01/eagles-vs-drones/

Now where can I get one of those eagles?!!

it sounds like a ridiculous idea to me but hey, some people are probably making good money from researching this, and playing with drones for top level government salary ;-)

The national news said the birds aren't harmed by doing this (really, no risk of the drone blades cutting somewhere?). The short video they showed wasn't convincing. Eagles aren't native in the Netherlands (except for a few extremely rare cases that are protected). How many eagles do they need to patrol all the 'sensitive areas' (that's everything related to politics, nuclear power, migrant centers, military, airports etc. etc.)? And even if they continue this plan, it should be pretty easy to take counter-measures that could be really harmful for the eagles.

P.S.: my city council made a lot of noise two years ago about patrolling the skies with birds of prey to scare sparrows, jackdaws etc. that are a nuisance to some of the citizens because of their massive presence. Expensive experiment, zero effect. If anyone was scared it was the patrolling bird of prey ;-)

Some Conflicting EOS-1D X Mark II Specifications [CR2]

Jack Douglas said:
CR must be pleased. I've only been around a couple of years but it sure seems the ranks have swelled the last couple weeks. Where's everyone coming from? Is this typical?

Jack

Yes it is pretty typical when there is a new big body release due, the 7D MkII wasn't as big as the 5 series, just wait for the 5D MkIV rumors to start rolling :)

Canon Sales Going Pretty Well in Japan

I am not a sales figure guy..and I definitely do not have to be reinforced that the cameras, (or camera company) that I know, use and love having to be the best sellers. I don't care. I use what works best for my needs.
I do not know it these sales figures are for gross $ or for units sold.(not good with charts..I have art brain...LOL) .....but if a camera is extremely inexpensive or had a huge price drop it may have a tendency to sell more units. I know that the Canon M experienced a HUGE price drop

snip. the Japan market is very price conscious. Most mirrorless units have had huge price drops in japan to sell well. Olympus sold off all their old inventory of E-PL6's and got top dog in Japan by doing that exact same thing.
Ahhhh...you may have a very good point there!

Invites for February Canon Press Event Going Out [CR3]

I think after the 1DXmkii announcement leaks for the 5D mkiv will be more detailed. Maybe just maybe folks they are sitting on a lot of great new stuff, they reveal it in their flagship, pro, high end dslr. After that the cat's kind of out of the bag and people will kind of know what to expect (or not to expect) for the next in line 5D.

Pro-100 and ink use

Yes, I'm pretty sure grey and light grey go down faster on mine too, but perhaps not quite as fast as yours (4 prints to empty!). I now refill my cartridges with bulk inks. It's a lot cheaper, and just as good. The trick is to have two sets of cartridges, which you keep filled up. As soon as you need to replace one cartridge, replace them all, and refill all the cartridges, even the ones which are mostly full (so you're just topping up several cartridges). The reason for this is that, whenever you replace any cartridge, even just one, the printer uses a certain amount of ink in all the cartridges to charge them. So, if you replace just one or two cartridges at a time, you are wasting an awful lot of ink.

Second Mitros+ or 600 ex-rt?

adventureous said:
If your Mitros is like mine which I bought new, after a few full power shots it takes a long time to recycle. My Cactus RF60's run circles around it at full power. After a few shots it is so bad it will slow down the pace of the whole shoot. I moved it to inactive duty and it is just a optical backup now. Mitros build quality is good, but in the performance department it is a slacker.

I have noticed that. I can get about 5-6 shots at 1/4 power in succession and then it has to sit for 10 seconds. 1/1 and it is even worse. I now have a 430 officially and ordered a mitros+ so I should be good.

Review: Nikon D5 by Ole J Liodden

When looking at high ISO shots that are out of camera jpegs, it is difficult to evaluate them because different amounts of NR are applied by different cameras.

One thing to look at is the amount of detail that is retained. Noise destroys detail, and as ISO climbs, the fine detail disappears.

We will have to wait and see what raw images with no NR look like at various ISO's, but the camera is obviously ahead of my 5D MK III by at least 2 stops.

Basic questions about getting started with a lighting kit

What model number are the heads and what controller are you using?

They are both Integra 500 strobes. I do not even know what the controller is?I'm using a physical cable to synch with my 5DM3 if that is what you mean.

Thanks.

The manual is here, it starts in German but has the English version later. http://hensel.eu/katalog/aitdownloadablefiles/download/aitfile/aitfile_id/27/

The power does indeed start at 5.0 for minimum power, I believe that is a European idea that normalises different powered light actual output, so a 250ws light would go from 4.0 to 9.0 if it had the same range and a 1,000ws light go to 11.0 etc.

7D MKII and EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Autofocus

Despite poor light condition I went out with the 7D and my 500MM f/4 (which I am still getting to know) yesterday. Tried, without converter and with a 1.4x or a 2x. Lots of badly framed shots, lots of BIF shots missing the BIF <G>, but also >80% where focus was spot on. Certainly no wildly out of focus shots. So the Camera seems to be working OK.
Here's an example of a Cormorant landing so its pretty much coming at me, I took a burst of 21 shots, I think all are pretty much sharp.

7DMKII, EF 500 f/4 MKII with 1.4x MKIII TC, ISO 3200, f/6.3 1/2500 sec.

Cheers Brian

Tamron SP 45mm f/1.8 VC Focus Retest

searsie said:
I returned a copy of this lens for a similiar AF issue. Perhaps I should have exchanged for another copy because when the lens focused correctly it was wonderfully sharp. Didn't though - bought a Canon 35 f2 IS instead that I am very happy with - think I like the 35 bokeh better as well. Third party auto focus is sooo frustrating when the rest of the lens is so tantalizing but like you Justin I believe a lens that promises AF should do it accurately and consistently (especially at the price Tamron is charging for this lens in Canada).

I actually had to return my copy of the 35 IS for exchange when I bought it several years ago, but I'm glad I did - I've loved the lens.

I'm very happen with the Tamron 45 VC now that focus is locked in. Extremely sharp, great drawing, and the minimum focus distance makes a for a lot of fun. My policy is to have a little patience when buying a new lens; you have a brief period of goodwill with the retailer to exchange and make sure you've got the best bang for your buck. I look forward to many great years with the Tamron 45 Vc.

Nikon rises prices - Will Canon follow.?

According to the pdf, the 200-400mm f/4 G went from 1,000,000 to 1,030,000.

With the fluctuating value of the Yen versus other currencies, prices may rise in some places, while others have not yet lowered their prices to account for the drop in the yen. Of course, they always price whatever the traffic will bear, which is why there is a thriving gray market.

Fujifilm Announces New Flagship X-Pro2 Camera

I've been waiting on a suitable replacement for my original 5D. It was a fantastic camera, especially when I bought it not long after release but it sadly packed in and the repair expense is worth more than the camera is now.

I've been considering waiting for the 6D mk2 or the Fuji XT-2. I'm primarily a landscaper / nature photographer (not a birder though, so fast AF isn't a requirement).

I love the Fuji system and have always enjoyed their lenses especially as I have a panoramic GX617 with the excellent 90mm & 180mm lenses. The Fuji approach to customers seems to be very good as well, with firmware updates practically giving some cameras a new lease of life by adding features.

I just don't know if I could wait for a 6D2 if the XT2 comes along beforehand. It's a tough choice, but my L's won't be redundant as I still have a 30V that I use from time to time. I'm really torn, but swaying towards the Fuji system due to it's size, weight and quality of lenses that probably match if not beat some L's. I think the X Trans and image quality is really good as well. I'm hoping to see some more 6D2 rumours so that I can get a better idea of what I want to do.

Lots of Sensor & AF Patents Emerge

keithcooper said:
There's quite a wide collection of patents just come out - I skipped over most of the photocopier and printer related ones ;-)

There were quite a few others covering things like transistor configurations in pixels and related aspects of sensor design/manufacture, such as

Keith

I've tried looking at US patents from Canon as they emerge, and its a huge and frustrating job. I admire your persistence at doing something that I lost interest in after a couple of tries reviewing a few dozen patents, many for printers medical equipment, etc.

New 5D mark IV or 1Dx [mark I]
If the price will be olmost the same?
Rumors say that 1DX Mark II will cost approximately $ 6,000.
It has not mentioned the price of 5D Mark iv.
I didn't mention the 1Dx mark 2.
I ment to the mark 1, that cost now about 4600$, and after the mark ll will come out, it will cost as the new 5D lV.
So what is better
Making a guessing exercise, I'd say the future 5D Mark iv going to have image quality at high ISO, similar to the current 1DX.

Probably the 5D Mark IV will have sharper images in low ISO, and AF system as good as 5DS.

The only certainty is that 1D series cameras will be more resistant to heavy use and harsh environments with rain or dust.
And it have a grip bild in already that cost 250$ at least
