Review: PowerShot G7 X via DXOMark

bosshog7_2000 said:
Actually a D800 would be great...except that I own Canon glass so not really an option. As for the 50mp, it was a bit tongue in cheek....what I want is a D810 grade of sensor in a 5D body. Also, I'm not an idiot...well aware that the 5D3 is an upgrade to the 5D2, at least from a AF and handling perspective. The image quality is NOT a huge upgrade which is what the OP was referring to.

I laugh at you armchair experts that think you know what others need or do not need from a camera. If you are happy with 22mp then good for you...fact is many of us are NOT. Also, it's not just the increased resolution, I also want better dynamic range.

I remember when I first bought my 5D2 all the Nikon guys were saying that 12mp from a D700 'was all anyone needs'. In fact there are still some who say that. That said, obviously Nikon felt differently and obviously so do many Canon photogs who got tired of waiting for a higher MP Canon body and jumped to Nikon.

Last I will say on this is that for 75% of what I do, the 16mp from myt XPro is plenty...but when I do landscape work I want as much resolution as I can get...and my 5D2 is long in the tooth and for landscape purposes the 5D3 is not worth buying if you already own a 5D2.

The glass, unless you are into the unique stuff like the 17TS-E and 65MP-E, is no excuse, you can get comparable Nikon glass for generally less money than the Canon equivalent, you could sell you lenses and buy the same Nikon ones and make money. I am always surprised at the comparative bargain secondhand 14-24 f2.8's are.

I was not saying you didn't 'need' 50MP, I asked what you thought you needed them for, there is a substantial, though subtle, difference. But like most people who claim things like crop camera reach advantages, often your stated 'need' doesn't actually gel with reality and realising the potential of the advancements you demand is not practical, and often not even possible.

Your point about Nikon's 12MP is true, but there must become a point at which an optimum MP level is reached. Obviously 12MP for the 135 format wasn't it for most people, however I'd suggest few ever utelise the full potential of the 24MP commonly available now, to demand 50MP (even if you then change that to tongue in cheek) demands a lot of the photographer, their technique, and the rest of the system, it is also impossible to actually see all those pixels in anything less than a 30" print @ 300dpi.

Lucerne, where to go?

Valvebounce said:
Hi tayassu.
Thank you for the food recommendation, we are just back from eating there! We didn't have the fondue, as it smells like a pair of well worn socks! The meals we did have were excellent and the staff were fantastic. Would definitely eat there again if when we come back!

We set out this morning in thick fog hoping that Pilatus would be above it, when we got there by train it was thick like pea soup! We went up anyway, wow what a trip, beautiful sunshine all the time we were up there, fantastic views, a really nice day out. Came back down and the fog had cleared, took the boat trip back and about 15 minutes in we went back in to the fog bank! Cleared a bit about 2 minutes before we docked.
Then we walked up to the Löwendenkmal, unfortunately the fog started back in and the light dropped very quickly so I took a couple of shots but I hope to make it back in the morning if the light is better.
We still had a bloody marvellous day.

Yesterday we had a trip to the theatre to see Saturday Night Fever, at least the songs were in English as I don't speak German beyond 2 beers please! On the way there the taxi was T boned by an old fellow in a Volvo, he rushed through a gap in the traffic as he left a side road straight in to the rear quarter of the taxi! Thankfully no injuries but the taxi was unable to continue, good excuse for being late!

Thanks to all for the ideas, I think we fitted in quite a lot. I will upload some shots but I cannot at the moment as I am unable to convert the RAWs to JPEG.

Cheers, Graham.

At last, where to eat... ;)
I have one recommendation for you there:
The Zunfthaus zum Pfister in the street Unter der Egg, they serve fantastic local food like fondue... ::)
But there are of course a lot of other great restaurants ;)

Have a nice trip! :D

It is nice to hear that you have a nice trip! :)
Yeah, fondue is a little challenging for untrained noses... ;)

70-200 2.8 II or 100 2.8L and 135 2 and 200 2.8

jdramirez said:
I'm not 100% sure I agree with not selling A for B. I continuously go upward in quality... so I presume that has something to do with it.

Sold 75-300mm Bought 55-250mm
Sold Canon XS Bought Canon 60D
Sold Canon 50mm f/1.8 Bought Canon 50mm f/1.4 (though this might be the most questionable upgrade)
Sold 60D Bought 5D mkiii

And there are a ton more examples... but the onl time I regretted selling something was when I sold my 100L IS macro. I missed it so much that I bought it again... but I sold my original for my than I paid... and then I purchased the new 100L for less than I sold the original for.

The only lens I have lost money on was the 24-105mm which I bought... sold... bought another... sold that... bought another... sold that... bought another... the last three time making money on the lens... but I'm still underwater as a whole on the lens... which is annoying.

LOL..........sounds like a business JD ;D

I've never make any profits from buying & selling camera gear :-\ Since most of my lenses and bodies were purchased new, any sales would put me in negative end. I rather keep them all ;)

Off topic: I was shooting with A7s(rental) last Friday-halloween. The high ISO looking really good, even compared to my 1DX. I'm not sure it has to do with Sony sensor or lower MP. 25000ISO looks really clean. I ran both 1DX & A7s raw files though DxO Prime - the a7s has upper hand.

I still have the Sony FE 55mm. Just waiting for price to drop.

Own 5D mk III and 7D, replace 7D by Mk II for sports? Dilemma....

docsmith said:
I am a bit like the OP. I have both the 7D and 5DIII. But since I bought the 5DIII, after a series of tests, the 7D has collected dust. I really do need to sell it. This isn't meant to disparage the 7D, it really is a remarkable camera and served me well for almost 3 years. But, I get why the 7D sits on a shelf when you own both. If you are not reach limited, I would rather have the 5DIII, and, at least from what I concluded, usually even when you are reach limited, I preferred the images from the 5DIII. Even though the 7D is a great camera, I like the images off the 5DIII better. You lose 1 fps. That really can't be too much of a factor.

docsmith said:
Anyway, I am interested in what those that own both the 7DII and 5DIII end up doing. I am considering the 7DII as a way to get that extra reach, hoping that the IQ/noise control/etc is now good enough that I no longer prefer the 5DIII images even when reach limited.
+1
docsmith said:
Back to the OP, I, personally, haven't seen enough to have an opinion, but I am glad you started the thread. I think a number of us upgraded from the 7D to the 5DIII. Some may consider going back to the 7DII or supplementing your kit with the 7DII. It is a good question. But I wouldn't expect the answer to be black and white.
Since I have the 5D mk III, the lowlight capabilities are so much better than the 7D: I automaticly pick the 5D if favor of the 7D. I live in the Netherlands, not exactly Carribean light circumstances here... In the sports department I shoot mainly soccer and windsurfing. Especially with windsurfing you need al the mm's you can afford: on full frame the 120-300 with 1.4 converter is often not enough, you'll end up cropping too much. Options would be
-keep it, save money, keep the backup body option
-sell the 7D and save up for extra glass (dropping the backup body option).
-invest in an upgrade from a camera (that served me well before) and get the extra reach (and will not end up being unused).

My 13yr old son did shoot with me with the 7D a few times and he did enjoy it. Taking that in consideration the saving for extra glass and keeping only one body is not the preferred option, being able to go out together is nice as well. I also kept my 24-105, despite having the 24-70II.

Still puzzeled by the AF of the 7D mk II, less than the 1Dx but better than the 5D mk III? Or just comparable to the 5D mk III? I think the 7D mk II is a nice camera for sports/wildlife but the upgrade is not as big as I expected. I really hoped they would have come up with a bit beefier update. Especially when you look at what the competition is doing now, it looks like Canon is losing it a bit. I'm not looking for video capabilities, but if even smartphones and gopro's can shoot 4K video, why can't they add it to a brandnew 1700 euro camera?!
On the other hand: if you own some glass, you do not switch brands quickly. Also, marketingwise I understand they cannot top the 1Dx or 5DIII with the 7DII, otherwise no one would buy these anymore.

Feel like I'm getting there but still miss actual info on how the 5D III and 7DII compare in real life situations....

Photo Expo 2014

Nothing really "blew" me away this year, the Canon booth was way over crowded,I was lucky to squeeze in there to mess around with the 7D Mark II and the 5D Mark III. I'm still on the fence with the 7D Mark II because I want to get a full frame later on. I do need to upgrade the camera I have now but I'm thinking with that $1,800 + tax, I can get a brand new 7D and either the Sigma 25-105mm (when they are back in stock) or Canon's 24-105mm "L" series lens for around the price of a 7D Mark II.

The speed would be a nice addition but I have learned on my 50D with it's 6.3 FPS, how to capture fast moving objects through trial and error. The battery life on the 7D Mark II is half of that on the 7D,I don't want to add additional weight by adding a camera grip(batteries). The third party lens being non-compatible (as of now) also isn't god for me since I only use Sigma, Tamron and Tokina. If I get the "L" series this would be my second Canon lens besides the kit lens.

So, I basically left the Expo holding off on getting the new Canon 7D Mark II but I will be buying the DxO 10 photo editing software. I downloaded the trial version after I got home from the Expo on Thursday.

Here's a few snap shots I took with my phone, Scott Kelby sighting, stopped for a 45 minute lecture with (Canon Explorer of Light Series) Tyler Stableford. The Black Rapid representative gave me a clasp for my strap after I told him how mine became loose (that's not suppose to happen) last summer and my camera dropped to the ground. I took that strap off as soon as I got home.

PHOTO PLUS EXPO 2014 NYC "WHO WENT & WHAT DID YOU LEARN"

I WENT TOO THE EXPO WEDNESDAY "SET UP DAY"
AND WAS ONLY ABLE TOO GO TODAY "A RAINY SATURDAY" BUT MET SOME COOL SHOOTERS
PICKED CANON'S BRAINS ABOUT HOW TOO SHOOT CERTAIN STUFF WITH THE NEW 7D MARK 2 "funny how everywhere i went today in the expo everybody was like how did u get so fast there hard too find & get" i was aggressive went too beach camera warehouse in central nj at Edison NJ and got a kit package with the stm lens lol
but umm i learned that sony, samsung, panasonic and nikon have edges over CANON big time in there cameras and some of there lenses that available and that are coming in the next 6-8 months
canon needs too wake up i cant believe the mirrorless cameras where so cool and fast and small "there trade off are they are not durable 1-2 drops and water damage and they might be done" i know everybody wants 4K video but only a few form what i played got it down packed
SO WHAT DID U LEARN FROM PLAYING WITH CANON AND THE OTHER BRANDS??
what can canon do too even catch up in certain areas

Canon Announces the Cinema EOS C100 Mark II

It's important to talk about distinguishable pixels rather than "4K." After the lens, the OLPF, the sensor, the RAW converter, the codec, and the necessary post, the number of pixels you can get out of a capture system is usually far less than the theoretical maximum imposed by the nominal pixel counts. Same with bit depth, sampling rate, etc. We need standardized chart/DR/RS/Noise etc. tests of every video mode of every camera but those are not to be found for reasons that continue to baffle me.

And for practical considerations, here's a nice hands-on with the FS7. Seems it's sort of at the "Mark I" level, needs firmware improvements, as does the Metabones Speedbooster to work with it. It also could use some hardware tweaks. It's a little early still for the FS7, and the Canons still have a few advantages as he mentions.

Broken 7D

Hi grey4.
Do you by any chance have an aftermarket grip fitted? I do and occasionally get similar symptoms, no 4second shot review, no playback of images, various controls not working.
Remedy, turn off grip, turn off camera, remove batteries, remove grip? (Not sure if this is necessary, it might help resolve a funky contact pin).
Put it all back together and play happily.

Hope this helps, if not dry rice or similar desiccant and warm area as others have said.

Cheers, Graham.

Why does a 2x TC lose 2 stops?

JumboShrimp said:
heptagon said:
The reverse is also true: A 0.5x TC gains 2 stops.

Those are usually sold as speed boosters to use a full frame lens on a crop camera. If i recall correctly, some lens designs with a wide angle and a large aperture have such an element built in.

In astronomy terms, I think these gadgets are called "telecompressors". I used one on my Celestron 8-inch to reduce the EFL from 2000/11 to 1000/5.6, or something like that.

In astrophotography, they are called focal reducers. Focal reducers do exactly that, reduce the focal ratio by a certain factor. So, if you have a 0.71x FR, your and you start with an f/8 f-ratio, then you end up with an f/5.68 f-ratio. Your aperture remains the same, so your focal length drops. If you have an 11" f/10 SCT, and apply a 0.71x reducer, you end up with an 11" f/7.1 SCT. As far as astrophotography goes, those two numbers are more important...physical aperture and f-ratio (we don't usually talk about focal length, not nearly as much as we do with normal photography.)

It's just common knowledge that an f/7.1 scope is shorter than an f/10 scope when the aperture is the same. What the exact FoV is usually doesn't matter all that much. One of the primary reasons we use focal reducers is to get a proper image scale. We generally try to oversample by 2-3x for best results. If your oversampling by 4-5x, then adding a focal reducer brings the sampling ratio to a more useful level where stars are well sampled, round, but still bright (oversampling too much, and you end up having a tougher time actually getting any exposure on dim nebula...focal reducers can GREATLY help get more light onto each pixel in a given exposure time.)

Now Shipping: EOS 7D Mark II with FREE 1TB Hard Drive!

Update:

Thought the LaCie bonus was 'in addition to' the pre-order bundle Canon Canada initially offered...but not so! Canon had previously advertised that pre-order bundles would be available if a 7D Mark II was pre-ordered by Nov. 15th.
Without notice...pre-orders offering these bundles ended, prematurely,on Oct. 29th. The LaCie bonus kicked in on Oct. 30th.
Although the link I initially posted does not indicate these offers are mutually exclusive, apparently, it's either pre- order bundle OR LaCie,but not both.

The following from a retailer's site ( and other retailers report similar):

"CANON EOS 7D Mark II
FREE BONUS OFFER
The introductory Canon Canada free bonus offer (with an estimated value of $139.99) is available to consumers who purchase an EOS 7D Mark II between October 30 - December 23, 2014
(Offer only to Canadian Residents and while quantities last)
Included BONUS is:
LaCie Rugged Mini USB 3.0 1TB Hard Drive
This bonus offer cannot be combined with the EOS 7D Mark II pre-order bundle promotion offer."

Auto focus BIF 6D vs. 60D

The golden eagle was back yesterday when we arrived at the house on the Pawnee Grassland in CO. I got some static shots of him perched that were sharp, but once he took flight there were no keepers. I grabbed the 60D this time since it was handy in the car, as my wife had used it the day before. Previous weeks I had always chosen the 6D, so it was a good test to try the 60D again, which I have owned longer. By the way, the raptors are usually perched 200 feet away on one of my ham radio towers. They weren't around this summer, as they must have migrated further north. I haven't noticed any front focus or back focus issues with either the 400mm f/5.6 or the 300mm f/4. Of course I am not shooting at f/2.8 with less room for error. Before I purchased these two longer lenses I used my 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II with a 2X TC III. That worked ok for static shots but was a disaster with the hawks or eagles in flight. The slow AF and getting totally lost in the blue sky didn't work with any of the four bodies I own. Maybe the 5D Mk III or 1DX would work with the zoom / TC combination. I sold the TC III since it wasn't getting any use anymore. I do use the 1.4X TC III on my three lenses that are compatible. I have not done well with the 300mm on a 5D classic or 40D for BIF, though antelope in my yard and waterfowl in a lake have been quite satisfactory.

Dilemma Which lens

jhwsfla said:
They only thing that sorta turns me off is the size of the 600 being it is huge to truck around with on a tripod.

For birds you generally need the longest lens you can get. Technically that's the 800/5.6, but the 600 II + 1.4xIII delivers better IQ in a lighter package. For birds, I usually use the 600 II with the 1.4x, sometimes with the 2x, rarely bare. 600mm can be too long for wildlife, but with the 300 II and extenders your covered.

I often handhold my 600 II or use it with a monopod, I hike/walk with it frequently. I use a tripod/gimbal mainly in winter when I'm setting up in one spot waiting for raptors. The 600 II weighs the same as the older MkI 500/4, which most considered a handholdable lens.

Canon 600EX-RT and Sekonic L-478DR LiteMaster Pro

msatter said:
It can manage three zones exactly as the AC3. If you want 15 speedlites you could go Godox/Cheetah/Neewer flashes and that has a basic controler but totally no support for Sekonic. ;-)

I only said 15 because the Paul C Buff Cyber Commander can control 16 lights individually, it has a flash meter in it too....

The Canon RT system does up to 16 flashes and or controllers in up to five groups. As can a variety of third party Chinese speelite and radio trigger systems. The Phottix Odin II's now have full five group mode, and several firms also have Profoto B1 style crossovers now that integrate with group radio systems too.

It is an exciting time for lighting, like the cowboy early days of digital cameras where a new or heavily improved function comes out nearly every week. To get the best advice for a particular user it really helps to get as much feedback on use and expectations as possible, the combinations of available gear are nearly limitless.

I have the Canon RT and PCB Einsteins but they don't play particularly well together, though I do use them both at the same time often. It seems the Odin II's are the leader in general functionality and radio control.

Modular DSLR Coming from Canon? [CR2]

rs said:
Nice idea, but Sony's SLT system is a far cry from an SLR. All the drawbacks of an EVF, coupled with a stop gap workaround before on sensor phase detect AF was mainstream, resulting in a significant reduction in light transmission.

A bolt on SLT mount adapter makes no sense with current mirror less tech, and a bolt on SLR mount adapter would be much more complicated.

An interchangeable EVF/OVF with a conventional EF mount and mirror box built into the body makes more sense, but I see no reason why a true hybrid EVF/OVF cannot be done - after all Fuji have had a rangefinder style version of this in production models for some time.

We can question the merits of an EVF vs an OVF but Sony's system does offer superior performance with SLR lenses to a standard mirrorless adapter.

Its also worth considering that whilst as you say it is of questionable use on a system that's sold on small size the same need not be true of a future Canon system. I would argue when/if mirrorless really starts to replace SLR we will probably see larger bodies with more controls and better grips(with larger batteries), such a camera would work a lot better with that kind of adapter compared to the small A7 system.
