<em>Candler to Write and Direct Hutcherson’s Next Hollywood Short Film Inspired by a Consumer Story</em></p>
<p><b>MELVILLE, N.Y., April 22, 2015</b> – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging, announced today that Kat Candler, a decorated filmmaker best known for “Hellion” and “Black Metal”, has signed on to Canon’s <i>Project Imagination: The Trailer</i>, a consumer contest helmed by Ron Howard. Howard and actor Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games”) will choose one winning trailer to inspire a Hollywood short film starring Hutcherson and written and directed by Candler. Ron Howard and Josh Hutcherson hand selected Candler for the project who’s film “Hellion” was in the 2014 U.S. Dramatic Competition at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to receive Honorable Mention for the Gamechanger Award at the 2014 SXSW Film Festival.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>“I’m so excited to work with Kat Candler and after watching ‘Hellion’, it was clear that she is extremely intuitive and can bring thought-provoking work to the screen,” said Josh Hutcherson. “The best part about the project is that I have no idea how the script will unfold with Kat or what type of part I’ll play — it’s totally up for interpretation!”</p>
<p>“Kat’s films are cinematic and she has a very real approach to capturing life experiences in a way that viewers can relate to,” said Ron Howard. “With everyday moments at the crux of this creative experiment, Kat’s technique and skill will lend themselves in the most authentic ways possible.”</p>
<p>“It is an honor to work with Canon, Ron Howard and Josh Hutcherson on this project,” said Kat Candler. “I’m a firm believer that there are many great stories living within each of us and the Project Imagination platform is the perfect opportunity to share and inspire others.”</p>
<p><i>Project Imagination: The Trailer</i> contest launched in February 2015 and is open for submissions through April 29th. Based on the concept that anything in life can be a movie, and every movie starts with a trailer, even those who have never picked up a camera before can easily turn everyday photo and video footage into a creative movie trailer, with titles, Hollywood style voice-overs and epic soundtracks. Consumers of all skill levels can create and submit trailers of their everyday moments using Canon’s Trailer Editor tool at <a class="bold_text underlink" href="http://imagination.usa.canon.com/" target="_blank">imagination.usa.canon.com</a>.</p>
<p>For the third iteration of <i>Project Imagination</i>, Francesca Silvestri and Kevin Chinoy of Freestyle Picture Company are once again producing the film, this time with Josh Hutcherson.</p>

Zeiss Distagon T* 2.8/21mm Review by Dustin Abbott

Zeiss addiction is right. There is just something about holding those beautiful crafted metal lenses that excites the inner geek!

Couldn't agree more. One of the few non-Zeiss lenses I have is the 180 macro, an L-series lens. Compare putting the plastic hood on that vs. the precisely machined metal hood of the 100 mm Makroplanar (or any other ZE lens for that matter, including the 21). Universes apart. +++

Patent: Sigma 400mm f/2.8 OS Sport

Hasn't it been more than a decade since any third party lenses have been made incompatible?
And even if Canon were to try something like that again, these lenses are all designed with upgradable firmware now.

Its going to happen!!

OOPS, it just did. A whole host of Sigma lenses were incorrectly reverse engineered and have issues on the T6i. Sigma is offering to fix the ones still in production, but any older ones that won't work are just throwaways.

6D or mirrorless

I have a 6D and recently bought a A7. The A7 was returned for a refund, so that is my short answer!

If you have a chance to actually try them in a store, then that would be a good idea as they are very different. If you get the 6D with a 24-105mm kit lens, it is much larger and heavier. That is about the only advantage I found with the A7. The Sony kit lens is pretty bad - quite soft away from the center. Big advantage to Canon. While some Electronic Viewfinders (EVF) are pretty good (the Olympus OM-D, for example) I thought the Sony EVF was a bit dark outdoors. If you like an optical viewfinder, then advantage Canon.

Not sure I follow. Are you saying only enthusiasts with money to burn would buy it? There would be no interest from pros?

I'm sure they'd sell some if they made a 70-300/2.8, but think about your original question:

Mitch.Conner said:
...what are the chances Canon might replace the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II with a 70-300 f/2.8 IS

You're asking if Canon might drop a very popular $2000 telezoom from their lineup and replace it with a lens that's likely >50% heavier, >25% bigger, and at >$6K at least 3x the cost. As I said the chances are nil.

If you want to know if there a market for a 70-300/2.8, independent from the 70-200/2.8, that's a different question, and one you didn't ask.

My mistake. You're right. I forgot my own original question.

Announcement: Canon EOS C300 Mark II. Full Coverage and Videos Here.

PureClassA said:
Well, Black Magic just released a a whole new firmware for their URSA cameras, which included firmware support a MkII Sensor that hasn't been announced yet. 120FPS in 4K RAW. Who wants to bet we see it tomorrow.... If they fixed their excessive FPN problem with this new sensor, it looks like I'll be looking to buy an URSA down the road. $5995 vs $15995 ....

And unless BM have transformed their lowlight performance you're buying a camera that is only usable in the studio. The C100 looks better at ISO20k than the BM4k does at 1600. And thew C300mkii should be significantly better than the old C100. And that's ignoring every other issue that has plagued every camera BM have released. You might not need a reliable camera, but professionals do.

6k for a studio only camera that might work or 16k for a 15 stops of DR at high ISO in a trusted package. If you had the money - and anyone working with a professional budget outside of a newly graduated one-man production company does - there isn't much of a decision to make.

Video Devices 4K External Recorder

<p><iframe width="100%" height="390" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2uDNAfU0KHU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p><em>Video Source: [<a href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/video/news/nab-2015-video-devices-pix-e-4k-monitorsrecorders" target="_blank">B&H Photo Video</a>]</em></p>
<p>Sound Devices are makers of great equipment. The have won a number of awards for their innovative products, particularly their audio recorders. However, their external recording monitors were successful enough for Sound Devices to dub the video-oriented division of the company Video Devices.   Earlier this month at NAB—where they won more awards—they showed-off a new series of external recording monitors, the PIX-E series.</p>
<p><!--more--></p>
<p>The PIX-E series is the company’s 4K effort. The series includes three monitors/records: PIX-E5H, PIX-E5, and the PIX-E7. The E5 and E5H both feature a 5″ 1080p screen whereas the E7 has a 7″ 1920 x 1200 screen. The Pix-E5H is HDMI-only. All 3 monitors can record 4K in a variety of Apple ProRes codecs. The E5 and E7 are capable of recording all the way up to ProRes 4444 XQ.</p>
<p>Some features of the monitors:</p>
<p>Waveform Monitor

Vectorscope

Histogram

TapZoom™

Peaking

Zebras

False Color

Frame Markers

Four Way View

LUTs</p>
<p>These monitors record to an mSATA-based SpeedDrive that plugs directly into the monitor using a USB 3.0 connection. This makes it very easy for dumping footage–no more looking for cables or a docking station. They have two versions of the SpeedDrive: a 240 GB version and an enclosure only version which allows you to choose your own mSATA drive.</p>
<p>The PIX-E monitors have a die-cast metal housing and feature a Gorilla Glass 2 screen. They will certainly be as rugged as the Pix-240i, if not more so. The screens on the monitors are in-plane switching (IPS) touchscreens. The touchscreen enables the great feature TapZoom™ to help get critical focus. The IPS panel provides a bright, colour-accurate, and wide viewing angle for your camera team. The monitors are powered by the very common Sony L-series batteries.</p>
<p>Optional accessories that are available include an XLR audio interface and a kit (hard case, articulating arm, batteries, 2 SpeedDrives, sun hood, and cables).</p>
<p>The series is available on <a title="B&H Photo Video" href="http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=PIX-E+4K+Recording+Video+Monitors&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=">B&H Photo Video</a> for pre-order. The 7″ version comes in at $1595, making these the most affordable 4k external recorders. They are expected to be released this summer.</p>

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Price - Performance?

jdramirez said:
The 5d mkii was revolutionarily better than the mkii. The launch price was $3500. I can't imagine that the price for the mkiv will be less than the mkiii, even though the advances in tech are evolutionary...

I assume the price point will be $4000. If I sell my mkiii @ $2000, then I'm still paying $2000 for a better camera, but how much better. I can't see it being $2000 better, especially since I'm still around 20-30k actuations... So I am assuming there is plenty of life left in the body.

I do get itchy wanting to upgrade, and I have all the lenses I want, save for some great whites, but the mkiv has to be mind blowing for me to upgrade. The mkiii is quite honestly, the prefect camera for me.

The jump from the 5D2 to the 5D3 was pretty large in all areas except for image quality. IQ was evolutionary. But the AF, speed and all else was substantial.

I find it hard to imagine that same kind of leap is made from the 5D3 to the 5D4. I think that is what fuels the 12fps rumor.

I'm with you on the price and upgrade question for owners of the 5D3. I have a 5D3 myself. Selling it would bring about $2K right now. Putting out at least another $1,800 is a lot of money for what is likely to be more mild evolutionary advancements than the previous generation.

It will be wonderful for first time buyers of a serious FF DSLR, but not so enticing for owners of the 5D3.

Canon Improves XF205 Functionality With Free Firmware Update

HTML:
<p>United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 21 April 2015 – Canon today announces new firmware for its popular XF205 Full HD camcorder, which improves the camera’s noise ratio in low light conditions¹ and enables live streaming of content over IP networks. Developed following feedback from a variety of XF205 users – from broadcasters to wedding videographers – the new firmware also enhances the XF205’s standard of performance and recording modes.</p>
<p><strong>Improved low light performance, reduced noise – a new image quality setting</strong>

The first firmware update, available now, will enable a new image-quality setting, allowing users to record footage with reduced noise, even in low-light conditions. The new update gives operators the freedom to choose their preferred image quality based on their shooting requirements. Users can select from the current default setting, which prioritises the camera’s high-resolution shooting, or the new setting, which gives priority to capturing video footage with reduced noise.</p>
<p><strong>Support for live IP streaming</strong>

An additional firmware update, available from late June 2015, will enable the XF205 to steam video footage over IP networks, a practice widely used by the broadcasting industry. By enabling this feature, users will be able to transfer live footage to news programmes and video-sharing websites. Additionally, the new firmware will allow the XF205 to work with Fujitsu’s video transmission equipment – the Fujitsu Network IP-900IID and IP-920D HD/SD Compact Video Decoders² – as well as software³ supporting IP streaming. With this new feature, users will be able to stream video over an IP network without having to alter existing video-capture and editing workflows, such as those employed at broadcasting stations.</p>
<p><strong>Enhancing XF205 functionality</strong>

In addition to the IP video streaming functionality, the new firmware will also enable XF205 users to take advantage of two new recording features. Firstly, when recording in MP4 format, videographers will be able to use slow and fast motion recording – slowing down action up to 40 percent, or speed up video by up to 250 percent. Additionally, when choosing Wi-Fi settings on the XF205, the selection menu will feature an improved user interface, delivering intuitive and easy to understand operability.</p>
<ol>
<li>The new image quality setting results in a slight decrease in resolution compared to the image quality setting originally employed in the XF205</li>
<li>The Fujitsu Network IP-900IID and IP-920D are trademarks of Fujitsu Limited, registered in Japan and other countries. The Fujitsu Network IP-900IID and IP-920D are scheduled to support the XF205 from April 2015. The Fujitsu Network IP-900IID and IP-920D HD/SD Compact Video Decoders may not be available/sold in all regions</li>
<li>Details regarding tested software are scheduled to be made available in late June 2015 on Canon’s Japanese-language professional digital video camcorder homepage: canon.jp/prodv</li>

Nikon Fullframe mirrorless coming?

AvTvM said:
Hmmm .. I see this on the linked NR page:

the camera will be small (about the same size as the Olympus E-M1)

Read more on NikonRumors.com: http://nikonrumors.com/2015/04/20/new-nikon-full-frame-mirrorless-camera-on-the-horizon.aspx/#ixzz3XvKWWddJ
Thank you! Didn't get that.
But as you stated if still with the F mount and no a dedicated mirrorless mount (+adapter for F lenses) there will be no improvements in overall system size and optimized optical design. There the Sony solution is still ahead (in principle, not with the existing lens portfolio).

I feel that it is unethical for a photographer not to photograph something he/she feels is interesting - visually or content wise.

You and I are on different continents of thought, then: by this logic, anyone can proclaim himself a "photographer" and photograph anything under any conditions, without regard to its effects on the subjects of the photos. Actions have consequences: photographers cannot step outside this reality, and aesthetics do not supersede kindness.

Let me modify my comment: I feel that it is unethical for a photographer not to photograph something he/she feels is interesting - visually or content wise as long as it does not DIRECTLY hurt anyone.

I expect of me, and other photographers to document the world uncensored for all to see. It could be war, sports, events, assassinations or poverty. If photographers censored themselves, we would not be able to see some other the shocking images of our past.

Ah, I see. I tend to take it one or two steps further: before I photograph someone (as an individual, not as an incidental part of a larger scene) I ask myself if my photograph benefits or harms the subject. If it benefits the subject then it's OK. If it harms the subject (including harm to personal dignity) then I need to ask myself if the real-world benefit to humanity makes up for that. I try to be modest about the effects my photographs will have on others, so in almost all cases the answer is no.

Censorship and ethical restraint are not two sides of the same coin. I agree with you regarding censorship, including self-censorship, but I try not to fool myself that my photographs are any kind of social documentation. If I were present at some important event, and I were in position to document it you can be sure the shutter would be clicking.

Faced with a natural disaster that people died. Seeing the devestation and being involved in it first hand. Knowing people had lost their homes, valuables and life. Being able to be their first hand as some struggled to survive or were devastated emotionally because of their loss. Having my camera gear at hand. Knowing that news organizations that were paid and were on the scene documenting everything.

With all this I looked at my camera and saw I was in the prime spot to document this, I choose not to. I do not regret the decision. I know I wouldn't want people taking pictures of my pain and suffering. People in this situation are seldom in a position to be asked if they can be photographed by the press. Their lives are put on display by the news media because the world needs to see, and in some ways that is beneficial.

Over the next few weeks the sight seers starting showing up, blocking traffic on the interstate they would slow to take pictures. A few times coming home I would pull along side of them and go the same speed they were going to block their view. These people weren't involved and taking pictures for of the disaster for their personal amusement.

So if some important event happens, if it doesn't involve taking pictures of people suffering, I would be taking pictures.
People hurting, in pain, loosing their lives and emotionally devastated. I do not pick the camera up.
Having taken part in a local triathlon, where my responsibility was to get pictures of the swimmers, I noticed that one of the swimmers was having troubles. I put the camera down, paddled over to check on her, and she grabbed onto the kayak and said "thank you" several times. It took several minutes to get the attention of the safety boat to pick her up, and by the time it was done, it was too late to catch the rest of the swimmers and continue shooting.

I paddled over to landing area, waited for things to calm down and all the bikes to depart, and then pulled up on shore to unload and put the kayak on the car. I was met buy the lady's husband who picked me up with a bearhug (I am NOT a tiny person) and then thanked me. Later, the organizer said something about how much they would have liked more pictures, but that they were even happier I helped the lady. (drowned swimmers are very bad publicity)

The moral of the story is, ALWAYS put your camera away when you have a choice of taking pictures or doing the right thing.
+10

I've never been in either of those situations, but I agree: there are few circumstances where taking pictures is the best choice at the moment. Taking pictures of official misconduct would be one example, assuming I were not in a position to intervene.

Best Video Gear of NAB 2015

HTML:
<iframe width="100%" height="390" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/fPvaLrrpFrk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
<p>Last week was NAB 2015 and there was all kinds of new and exciting gear for the industry. This video from TheCameraStoreTV gives a quick rundown of what they liked at NAB 2015. This year’s hot topics included new Adobe Creative Cloud updates, the mirrorless camera revolution, and drones.</p>
<p><strong>Adobe CC Updates</strong></p>
<p>Adobe has a bunch of updates to increase your productivity and creativity. The new mobile application that is in development, “Project Candy,” will be a useful tool to help match the colour of your shots or create looks based on whatever inspires you.</p>
<p>There is also a new Lumetri Color Panel which includes a lot of presets and better functionality.</p>
<p>One update for Premiere Pro that got many people excited was the new Morph Cut. This is a fantastic effect that will save many headaches for those that shoot a lot talking heads. It is a transition type effect that smoothes out any jump cuts so that they’re unnoticeable.</p>
<p>Another interesting announcement from Adobe is the Character Animator app. Use artwork created in Photoshop or Illustrator to create 2D animations. The program tracks your facial movements via webcam and records your voice to apply to the character you’ve created. The software is in its early stages but looks fun and easy.</p>
<p><strong>Mirrorless Cameras</strong></p>
<p>As stated in the video, mirrorless cameras were everywhere at NAB. These fantastic little cameras are finally starting to get the attention they deserve. They’re smaller, lighter, more adaptable, and have great video features. The Panasonic GH4 and Sony A7S were two of the most talked about cameras in the past year.</p>
<p>The Panasonic GH4 will be getting a firmware update focused on native anamorphic support. This update should pair nicely with the recently announced Veydra M43 anamorphic lenses. The GH4 is also expected to get V-log gamma which is apparently based off the VariCam. This should make the GH4 an even more powerful camera for the indy filmmaker or a great B-cam for the Varicam. However, there has been nothing confirmed regarding the release of V-log.</p>
<p><strong>Drones</strong></p>
<p>Drones have been blowing up in the past year and this year is certainly going to be no different. It gives the low budget filmmaker an opportunity to have the vast sweeping aerial shots in their films that the big Hollywood productions have.</p>
<p>DJI will release two versions of the Phantom 3. The Professional model will feature a 4K camera where as the Advanced model will be an updated version of their HD camera. Both cameras will be gimbal stabilized and able to take 12mp stills. The flight controller and sensors have been redesigned to give users a stable and more responsive flight experience.</p>
<p>3D Robotics has announced the Solo Smart Drone. Designed to be used with a GoPro, the Solo Smart Drone has several useful features such as: Cablecam for smooth linear tracking shots; Orbit to circle an object; Selfie to show yourself having fun; and Follow Me which will track with a GPS-enabled mobile device.</p>
<p>Blackmagic and Arri also have smaller form factor cameras to be used on drones coming out shortly. The Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera is expected to be available in July and the Arri Alexa Mini will be available for shipping in May.</p>

Kind of like how friendly Nikon folks insisted that more than 12MP wasn't necessary...until the D800 came out.

In all seriousness though, this is exciting. If this camera delivers on DR and video, I may stay with Canon rather than switching to Sony. This is your last stand Canon, make it a good one!

It is funny how excited all those trashing the 'Droners' are the second their is some talk about Canon possibly getting even just a trace more DR than Exmor! ;D ;D ;D ;D ::)

Kind of like how Canon didn't need to produce a camera with 36MP until it had one with 50MP?

Let me summarise the situation with said people:

Any measurement or statistic where Canon has the better number or statistic is important (until Canon is behind) and vital and any measurement or statistic where Canon trails is unimportant (until Canon is in front.)

Oooh, I get it now :)

sigma 120-300 or sigma 150-600 sports

http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=26037.0

Might be helpful, lots of links and information in there

A quick look at my written down data

100-400L on a 5d3 gives 13Mpix on a 5d3, and ~11 at max FL
120-300S on a 5d3 gives 20Mpis on a 5d3

On a 7d it's ~6mpix and 11 respectively ,

So 120-300S should be a major upgrade, even though you lose some focus length,

Dividing 11 by (1.3333^2), gives us 6.75,

This would mean the 120-300 on a 7D should be able to resolve very similar detail to the 100-400L(version1) on a 7d, despite having 100mm less, you do however have a 2 stop advantage.
---
Even thought it is claimed/proven that the sigma 120-300OS and 120-300S are identical in construction,
Numerous reviews/tests/data shows that the latter is slightly sharper...., Also it is A LOT more reliable, personally i would stay away from the 120-300 OS, and only opt for the sports.

I have not found very reliable data about the 150-600S yet, however indications show it should be similar to your current 100-400
