Who is going to buy the new 5Ds's?

Two very fine looking specimens I must admit however the sensible part of my brain is telling me I have no business buying either of them now or in the future. As a hobbyist and occasional paid gig shooter the 6D is perfect.

It's funny how there was complaining from some about the lack of a high resolution camera from Canon and now it's announced it's not good enough. Didn't we do this with the 7DII? And the 6D? And the 5DIII? All three of those turned out pretty good IMO.

Edit - I will definitely rent one of these puppies one day. That'll be a good day for sure! ;D

Projected DXO Scores .... And some POTENTIAL good news about 5DS ISO performance

Tony Northup has an interesting take on how the 7Dii has finally caught up in ISO performance to Sonikon (but not in Dynamic Range).
Also interesting take on DXO projected perceivable pixels.

One thing to note about this is Canon has been planning for high MP and has developed many lenses many of us already own that already can take advantage of high MP's starting with the 100L to all the mkii zooms and latest L lenses to even the 24/28/35 IS lenses that acheive close to the maximum perceivable pixels in the current sensor.
I don't think Nikon planed as far ahead in terms of releasing lenses supporting higher mp when you look at their lineup. Luckily for Nikon, there are 3rd party glass that can but have compromises (super pricey or sub par autofocus like Zeiss/tamron/Sigma/etc..)

http://youtu.be/Ww6QGpryrLM
He did make an error in calculating percievable mp on the 70-200 and 500 f/4. They should be HIGHER

Now it's digestion time on new 5Ds

Back when I bought the 1Ds3, I wanted a camera that could do all that I might want to do.
I didn't want my gear to hold me back from trying anything, from BIF to macro...it has served me well.

That was then, when I was younger and more able to be out and about...now, age is catching up
and am more likely to shoot indoors and, am more prone to consider "need" as opposed to "want".
The improved versatility doesn't seem to be as important as it once was. That ole camera has the
feel of that ole pair of slippers that sure do feel comfortable when lounging around.

Regardless, I read this morning that availability is June...lots of time to change my mind.

Bingo! New Canon 5Ds has 50.6 MP new rumored specs

All I wanted was Sony/Nikon like dynamic range, great color, clean low ISO's.
I'm getting a Sony a7r for the time being

I just picked up A7r with Zeiss 55mm even before the 5Ds announcement, thinking I don't need 50 MP, even if it was Sony sensor with better DR. Finding out its a Canon 50 MP sensor with same DR as 5D III just makes me glad I picked up the A7r.

I will still use my 5D III for most things, but A7r is a nice portable/backup solution. I do wish the A7r had either a touch screen to utilize touch-focus or a 5D III type joystick for moving AF points. Pushing C1 button to activate AF point to move, then using the front dial to move AF point up/down and a separate back dial to move AF point left/right a slow, painful, annoying process for A7r.. :'(

CPN: David Noton on the new EF11-24mm lens

It's an interesting article. A landscape photographer who doesn't even mention once the word "filter". The new zoom lens doesn't accept any kind of filter. Maybe I'm old-fashioned and with the improved DR of the new Canon sensors you can fix all blown out skies later on. Oh wait, they didn't improve DR in 8 years or so...

I'll stick to my TS-E lenses - all of them offer shift and the use of filters. I can't remember a landscape shot in the daytime in the last couple of years where the use of filter(s) or shift for perspective correction or both would not have helped to improve the shot. But maybe I'm biased because of the available equipment at hand.

Euro Pricing for EOS 5DS, 5DS R & EF 11-24 f/4L Revealed

Re: Euro Pricing for EOS 5DS, 5DS R & EF 11-24 f/4L Revealed

Someone Who Isn't Me (SWIM) ordered a 6D at a cost of about £1,200 and the (well known) retailer fraudulently stated the price on the import paperwork as about £300.

Your customs guys seems to be very kind...
In Germany the price on the import print usually don't count anything, if the custom guy disbelieve it. Then you get a mail, you have to come to the customs and show the invoice of this 300whatever. If you haven't or only have a real invoice of the complete price, you have to pay the whole price - and the custom price isnt the problem, its the sales tax, currently 19%.
And all that in mind an import isn't as good as it looks like.
I was in Hongkong and Tokyo 2013, and see the prices there. (the displayed price, didn't ask for any discount)... If I add the ~20%, I got about max 10% cheaper than the amazon.de price - and then I dont risk anything, no warranty etc.

POLL: Do you need 1/8000s shutter speed?

The original 1D managed 1/16000 sec according to DP review:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos1d

If they could do that back then why can't they do it now? Would it be used often? I doubt it but on a "Do it All" camera like the 1DX I think this sort of facility should be available. After all there are some (me?) who fancy the idea of freezing insect wings, or at least getting close!

Because the shutter curtains are traveling at the same speed, the 1D curtains had less far to travel than the 1DX curtains.

And the 1/500 sync is due to the fact that the 1D had a CCD sensor so had an electronic second curtain.

If you want to freeze insect wings do it now with equally short, and shorter, flash duration speeds.

As mentioned, it's a 1.3 crop camera. But no 1.3 crop cameras after that could. But can we see some of your 1/8000 second images with motion blurred insect wings? And how much light do you plan to dump on the insect? I shoot with a f2.8 and have to use ISO 400-800 to get 1/8000 sec exposures in full sunlight. Are you sure you won't light you insects on fire?

I've considered getting a 1D just to shoot 1/16000 sports photos, they are $100-300 on eBay. Still I think I'd shoot 2-3 good ones and then stick it in the closet.

Not quite sure that I have properly interpreted your post, however my point was that "it would be nice to have" and that they could do it in the past. Also that, in their flagship models, manufacturers should incorporate everything they can. Maybe you won't need some of the features - I certainly don't, I haven't even looked at the manual to find out how to turn on the video function as life is too short!
Would I like higher available shutter speeds - yes. It is no biggie but it might be handy/interesting occasionally. There are lots of other things I would like as well such as 6 ISO etc..etc.. The shutter speed thing is something that we know they can and have done.
Incidentally if you look at a slow motion sequence of Canon's shutters working one can see that (at high shutter speeds) the exposure is effectively a slit between the shutter blades that passes over the sensor. Therefore the exposure speed is determined by the speed of the blades and the size of the slit so sensor/film size is not important.
This is not a new idea (see Leica focal plane shutters) or the fixed shutters (slits) that RAF cameras used in the 1940s producing the characteristic strip images that my father's squadron (RAF 225 Sqdn) used to shoot in 1942/3.
There may well be issues, such as durability or Auto Focus, which make such high shutter speeds impractical but if this is not the case then I would like to have it.

John,

To answer your fundamental question, Why are there not faster shutter speeds? Because the slit between the first and second curtain at 1/8000 is tiny, I expect they see reliability and consistency issues going faster, essentially, making that tiny slit smaller.

When you reply, But they did it before with the 1D? The answer is that was different technology and it didn't have so far to travel. CCD's (the 1D) and CMOS (everything after the 1D) are fundamentally different and even at this point they can't make global (electronic) shutters work on CMOS sensors like they can on CCD sensors, so the newer cameras have to rely on mechanical shutter tech, not advanced sensor tech like the 1D did. Also the 1D sensor is 1.3 times shorter than a ff sensor, this means it covers it's sensor in 33% less time.

The advantages of CMOS over CCD for general photography have been very apparent for a long time and so outweigh the advantages CCD have over CMOS that even the quality holdouts, medium format digital, have now all moved to CMOS from the last generation which were all CCD's.

What do/don't you like about the 5Ds?

LetTheRightLensIn said:
The thing is you can get an adapted Sony that will offer a lot more dynamic range and only modestly less resolution for a ton less money.

Personally it's clear nothing anyone says matters and they are, as I feared back in 2007, just lost the plot totally, all this talk about kings of the hill who saw no need to do anything.

<snipped>>

That post is almost enough to make me go out and order something from Canon that I don't need.

Well, Canon kind of exploded all at once !!

Well, it seems to me with a 50mp, and the option to transform into a 1.3 or 1.6 might mean the true CF will no longer be beneficial.

Then again, 5 fps is pretty slow for an action camera -- so, maybe I jumped my 'tech weak' self out there too quickly on that one. MOF, I own both 5DM3 and 7D2 and like both for different reasons. The 5Dm3 will capture action pretty well tho' ... no problems here anyway, although the choice would still remain 7D2 action when that option presents itself.

Have not 'tested' under extreme conditions yet, as my work doesn't require it normally. Both 7D2 and 5DM3 shoot BIF and athletes well, so depending on the actual shooting conditions, I'd depend on either one for most types of shoots, except maybe indoor with weak light, and the 5DM3 would then become first choice.

I'm not very tech savvy, but I imagine the 50mp takes a bit more time (even micro seconds) to capture that image, and thus, the 5 fps limit. But I'm curious what kind of image one will get at 50mp and 5 fps on action. Altho you're right -- 7D2 will top the action category for quite some time, I'd bet.

But generally, it seems Canon released 'not much' this past year, and suddenly jumped out with numerous new cameras and lenses as well all at once, like "time to bombard the public". I'm not in the mood, nor do I have the need, to upgrade at this point. The equipment in my bag now suits everything I shoot at the moment, and I don't see myself upgrading just because something new arrives. Be interesting to see what guys that can use the 50mp come up with ... looking forward to seeing what the guys in the field capture, rather than what the lab or mfgr produces under ideal conditions...

Dynamic Range example please

Otherwise I don't believe.

I don't see your problem, unless you disbelieve the dr measurements done by various sites:

Take any scene you had to bracket with 3 exposures and ~1.5ev spacing. With an exmor Sensor from the Sonikon empire or Magic Lantern's dual_iso you can capture the same scene in one shot. And if something moves (like a windmill in front of a sunset), this is your only option to do it.

Wait for 5D4 or go for 5D3/6D right now ?

Hey guys,
My old DSLR body is canon 400D....it's very very out of fashion.

I'm going to take a 2-week trip to Germany in June and I should bring a good and reliable camera with me at then.

Should I wait for 5D4 ?

If we are talking June and you are considering a 5DIV wait - it will be on the shelf at that time for sure. Already in SEP 2014 Canon said a high megapix body was on the way because Canon customers wanted it and needed it. This was reiterated in DEC. Its coming now.

And you know that because you have inside knowledge on Canon's release dates and supply schedules, or because it is what you, personally, hope for?

Further, who said the 5D MkIV will be high MP and why do you think the OP might need that?

Hi there Maiaibing,

How is that advice of yours looking now? Now we are in Feb and the 5D MkIV isn't even rumoured to be announced let alone released until late 2015, it certainly isn't going to be anywhere before June! And the new 5DS and 5DS R, which are almost certainly not the cameras best suited for the OP, are not due for first patch deliveries until June, which even if they were the camera for the OP and he got one in the first batch, leave precious little time for getting to know it before the big June trip.

I don't think you could have been more wrong or given worse advice.

My advice was correct and spot-on. Snipping part of what I have written just makes you look even more ridicoulous.

The original poster knows much, much more today about the 5DIV, about the high megapixx camera, about Canon's strategy for its next high end bodies, about Canon's pricing and s marketing strategy. All it took was a few weeks - exactly as I argued for. So now the time is ripe time for a much better informed decision. OP is going on holiday in June - he could - and should - of course wait a couple of weeks as suggested.

"I have no idea if there will be a 5DIV ever or what it will look like if there is. But I'd be very happy to take a substantial bet on Canon launching a high megapix camera before June. Will it be called 5DIV? This was how the question was put to the forum - and why I used that in my answer. I am sure the original poster understands."

Your personalised attacks are irrelevant, counter-factual and boring. I will never ever read one of your posts again or participate in another exchange with you.

I'm done part III - Until Canon comes out with the following

mackguyver said:
That said, if Canon releases any of the following rumored or imaginary items, arranged in no particular order, I'd be in the pre-order line:

Lenses
1. 16-35 f/2.8 III (with improved IQ)
3. 12-24 f/4 (I loved the 12mm FOV with my Sigma)

Bodies
1. 7D II with near-full frame IQ and still 8FPS or better (would love built-in GPS as well)
2. 5D IV with 36+ MP
4. M3 with the 70D sensor
It looks like some of my wishlist has come true. The 16-35 came, but with IS and f/4. I bought it and love it. Sold the 16-35 f/2.8 II. The 7D II arrived, but I'm passing for now. The 12-24 f/4 arrived as the 11-24 f/4 and I've pre-ordered one. The M3 has arrived as well, but not in the US, so I'll hold off for now. The 5Ds has also been announced and after looking at the sample images, I think I might have to order one to replace my 5DIII.

I think it might be time to sell some gear - maybe one my TS-E lenses and my much beloved, but dust-collecting 24L II. I think I'll hang on to the 16-35 f/4 IS for now as it's about as close to the perfect travel lens as you can get. The 5DIII will also go as we head into summer if I decide to the get the 5Ds.

Has anyone figured out what this does?

Improves the AF controllability when shooting in Live View mode with a wide-angle lens (fixed focal length or zoom).

I'm curious also, wonder if the 2470 classifies as a "wide angle" lens?

Installed and working at least.
I'm hoping it fixes the issue that happens when you scroll to the edges of the LV AF area (which isn't the edge of the screen) and the cursor/zoomed view snaps back to the center. Hopefully it will just stop now, and won't surprise me by jumping back to center making me scroll all over again. Or better yet, maybe it will go to the edges of the screen and stop there.
I finally got around to updating my 1D X & 5DIII last night and I'm very happy to report that it does fix this really annoying issue! I'll be a much happier LV camper now ;D
