RF 24-105 f/2.8 and 28-70 f/2 Comparison

Hey everyone, I added some final comparisons: sunstars and flare at f/22, and some outdoor portraits. On the portraits, the camera was in same spot for each pic. There's one shot with both lenses where I'm standing in same spot. Then, I moved closer to the camera to try and get same framing with the 28-70 as the 24-105.

They really are about as good as you can get without a prime. As far as I can see, the difference is really about preference of aperture or range of focal lengths.

Canon releases firmware v1.9.0 for the EOS R5

Hi, I saw several fw updates for EOS R3, R6, R7 and so on over 1 month ago but nothing for the R5 which is still stuck at version 1.9.0.
I like the camera very much but of course AF could be faster and bit more precise, or other features to be added.
I hope Canon will NOT stop developing updates for the R5 firmware now:-(...?
The R3, for example, did not get the pre-shooting buffer added via a firmware update. The latest R3 update added:
1. Adds support for RF-S10-18mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens.
2. Fixes an issue that may cause the camera, in rare instances, to experience a delayed restart after the camera has gone into Auto Power Off.
3. Fixes minor issues.

When a 'replacement' model is at a certain point in the pipeline, Canon stops adding features to the current model. Note that the rumored spec list of the R1 does include the pre-shooting buffer. If you want that, Canon wants you to buy an R1.

All Nikon F-mount gear is officially out of production

On a related note, the good news here is that we are finally starting to see some price relief on high end Canon pre-owned EF glass and that's a good thing, for sure. While I have sold off most of my EF glass, I continue to hold my EF-R adapters, until such day as I see a bargain on a super tele EF L lens or maybe an EF24-70mm F2.8L or other high end zoom lens. I never thought I would see the day when you could purchase a pristine pre-owned Canon EF11-24mm F4L lens in the $1-1500.00 range. Now, I frequently see them listed on Ebay and other sites in that price range. Can't wait to see how the new R1 body's upcoming release will ultimately affect pricing for EOS 1DX lll bodies, both new and pre-owned. While I will probably never own an R1 body, I might consider picking up a 1DX lll body to use with my 500mm F4L lens.

R5 wifi and iPhone

I can tell you what worked for me, what i did was this turned on by themselves without your input, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue. Here are some suggestions:-
1. Reset Network Settings:-
-Go to Settings on your iPhone.
-Scroll down and select "General."
-Scroll down again and tap on "Reset."
-Choose "Reset Network Settings."
-Enter your passcode if prompted, and confirm the reset.
This action will reset Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN settings, but it could help fix the issue.
2. Forget Bluetooth Devices:-
-Go to Settings > Bluetooth.
-For each connected device, tap on the "i" icon next to it and select "Forget This Device."
After forgetting all devices, check if the issue persists.
3. Turn off Handoff:-
-Go to Settings > General > Handoff.
-Disable the Handoff toggle.
Handoff allows continuity between Apple devices, and turning it off may help resolve the issue.
4. Reset All Settings:-
-If the above steps don't work, you may need to perform a more extensive reset.
-Go to Settings > General > Reset.
-Choose "Reset All Settings."
This won't erase your data, but it will reset system settings to their defaults.

Remember that these steps may vary slightly depending on your iPhone model and the iOS version you're using. Always make sure to back up your important data before performing any reset or restore procedures. For more details follow instruction.

Canon takes 3 out of 5 spots in BCN’s top cameras of 2023

Flickr's stats are photos taken, right? Maybe R5 owners take more pics/take more pics worth posting/are more likely to share on there etc. It's a totally different type of insight compared to sales (units or revenue).
Stats based on photos shared/uploaded. Maybe "higher quality" shots than Apple snapshots or maybe old guard Canon shooters like Flickr (like me).
Photos taken on a R5 would be a very different data point but my keeper rate is higher than my 5Div to the extent that it is hard to choose which best shot to share sometimes.
Sales and revenue data have their place for Canon's future viability but it is fun to see how Canon shooters share the results of their purchases.

Canon Patent Applications: Camera Lenses in other equipment

In this patent application (2024-011653), Canon explores using electronically controlled lenses (aka EF or RF lenses) in other fields that they currently offer products for such as medical and industrial imaging. Essentially Canon is looking at the industrialization of the EOS platform. Where all our external controls would be either network, ASIC-controlled or by various

Canon EOS R1 prototypes are in the wild [CR3]

I see. So the 1D X with 18 MP and the 1D X II and III with 20 MP weren’t true flagships. What were they? Dinghies? Rowboats? Canoes? Sculls? Kayaks? Water wings??
S/he probably thinks "The 1D X series was a life preserver which Canon was hanging on due to being late to mirrorless Blackberry/Nokia"

BCN 2024 Awards for the Calendar 2023 year

I think price has a lot to do with it. Olympus has a lot of cheap cameras they sell off into the Japan market.

Nikon just sadly seems lost these days. I say that as a long time Canon fanboy. Always liked having a strong competitor in Nikon. As long as they finished second ;)
IMO Nikon has some better lenses. Especially in the telephoto category. And in the midrange category.

But canon has a much better portfolio of camera bodies. The AF with canon bodies has been exemplary, from what I’ve used.

That’s a gross oversimplification. But it’s been my experience from trying a smattering of stuff across both sides of the aisle.

R6 II Anti Flicker with Sports

I think there are two issues here (but I could well be wrong). Antiflicker is primarily a response to fluorescent tubes and works reasonably well. LEDS are a different beast and they operate at 50 or 60Hz. When shooting events with LED lighting I try to use a slow shutter speed if possible, although that doesn't really work for sports. Is flash an option?

R5 tilted screen going blank

Greetings,
Sorry to hear you are having an issue. If the display goes blank when rotated (vari-angle), then yes, there is a problem with the LCD. It doesn't matter what happens when you close it screen facing out. The behavior indicates a problem in the connection shaft .

If you are in the US, visit My Canon and open a repair request. If you are in another region, visit Canon Global and select the region where you are located.
