Sony Outreach to Sigma About Buying Foveon Technology and super-lightweight OEM lenses!

Since it's now after NAB 2024, my rumour mill electronics engineering source in Singapore, is now saying that INDEED Sony has made an outreach to Sigma for producing cheaper prime and zoom lenses under an OEM/ODM agreement for various Sony DSLR camera models. Priced below G-Master models they will be midrange lens products and it is likely that the first set will be coming out in 2nd quarter 2025.

My source had no further information on Sigma Foveon image sensor technogy being bought by Sony for eventual resale to Apple for iPhone/iPad but that does not mean it isn' happening.

It just means he has no further information.

We do know however than On Semiconductor and Canon are getting a look-see at becoming suppliers to Apple for 64+ megapixel image sensors! Apple it putting enormous pressure on Sony to get better image sensors at better prices for inclusion into Apple products!

I would not be surprised to see some sort of OEM/ODM product agreement announcement sometime between June to October 2024. Sony has to do SOMETHING in order to NOT LOSE SUCH a big image sensor customer as Apple!

Canon releases a full frame 19MP Global shutter sensor to Market

I've downloaded R3 samples and a9iii samples, it's not even close, completely disagree with you. As so many other reviews I've seen as well. What on earth are you talking about?
The A9III seems just to be awful in IQ.
Sony propaganda and marketing won't change and won't hide the reality : this first global shutter sensor has a Bad Dynamic and awful noise !

I would be curious about the sales of this camera...I expect it's only a success for Youtubers, but it's a miss for sales !

The truth about Sony is beginning to be shown : a lot of marketing promises...and a lot of lies ! Last examples : the firmwares for A1 and A7SIII, promised to be major MAJOR ones, are just a disaster ! They créateur problèmes and bugs on cameras ! And the improvements are ... tiny.

Meet Insta360 X4: Delivering 8K 360 for Unmatched Creative Possibility

Have the x2 and will get the x4. Its a fun camera. Incredibly easy to use. Super easy to tag along for casual footage, water shots, rides and funny family stills. Stabilization is unbelievable. Editing has a learning curve, but software has improved.

I used a X2 for a year, was great! However I felt it was lacking in low light performance (which I needed).

The software was good, but pretty sure it's improved a lot since. Many users, more R&D budget. Insta360 did a stellar job with this line-up imho. Easy to use, lots of power-features to make your life easy. Wish Canon would invest in similar ways in their software suite, which feels dated and clunky by comparison.

The Canon PowerShot V10 Mark II rumored for Q4 of 2024

The pocket 3 is one drop away from being useless.
Pretty much every gimbal is fragile.
Despite the name, I would not carry a Pocket 3 in my pocket.
The Pocket 3 still has its uses but that is one of my main attractions to the V10.
My biggest gripe about the Pocket 3 is that it has a fixed aperture.

Why did you switch to RF?

And your RF 200-800mm doesn't fit on it.
You do highlight another key point about transitioning to RF, if you want to partake in any new gear, like RF lenses, you will need an RF body. So, yes, while not a key factor for me back in 2020 when I picked up my R5, this thought was in the back of my mind and critical for those that want any of the new RF lenses, like say a RF 28-70 f/2.

Canon RF 35mm f/1.4L USM video features

When compared side by side, the T stops seem about the same.
The smoother out-of-focus background is likely due to the APO like the RF 85 f/1.2 vs the RF 85 f/1.2 DS.
What I don't get is how the Sigma 14 f/1.4 is also an APO lens but it seems like it is T1.5.
None of Sigma’s lenses are stated to be APO. The Sigma 35mm f1.2 having a smoother background than the GM is purely down to it having a wider maximum aperture. Just like the Canon RF 85mm f1.2 L renders an even smoother background than Sigma’s 85mm f1.4 Art DG DN.

Canon Patent Application: Hybrid IR/Color sensor to improve Image Quality

Using the existing bayer pattern and modifying the channels in-camera, could the result be better AF as the contrast seems to be better? Or perhaps used only in low light or when focus hunting?
Most likely, if there is any benefit to changing how the there channels are used in terms of AF, someone at Canon thought about it years ago. An inferred fourth channel should definitely have benefits in some situations.

R5 IBIS constantly vibrating with EF 70-200 2.8 non is

My R3 & EF 400 f2.8 IS with the Canon adaptor does this as well and drives me nuts. I’ve spent hours trying to find info on this online and YouTube, but no luck. I guess I should’ve asked here.
I guess we’re stuck with it if we want IS while simply looking through the view finder. What bothers me is how long it keeps buzzing when it’s not needed, usually on a tripod. Wasteful wear on the IS and batteries.
You can turn it off either with the lens switch or camera menu--if you don't want it on while using a tripod.
But remember to try ECO Mode for quick time outs, which stops the IBIS. Startup time is virtually instant when you press the shutter button or most other control buttons.

In theory, what you say is reasonable; however, in practice the characteristic you describe makes little difference to battery life or IBIS wear and tear if you are properly managing things, something which quickly becomes second nature.

As I mentioned previously, if the power issue is important to you, be sure to choose an EVF option that doesn't include having the proximity sensor constantly active. This keeps the camera from staying on all the time. Of course, in a studio, with the camera placed down when not in use, you wouldn't need to worry about this at all.

EDIT: Caught mistake regarding menu option for turning off IS.

Canon Patent Application: Filter system for Dual Fisheye

What would be the use case for CPL with VR?
CPL with wide angle that includes the sky during the day is problematic... with the sky hard to avoid with this lens if recording outdoors.
answering my own question but perhaps a CPL to reduce reflections could be used to avoid reflections of elements behind the camera (tripod, people etc) from reflective surfaces in front of the camera. I haven't used the lens but I imagine it would be tricky to avoid unintended elements in frame.

The first review of the Canon RF 10-20mm f/4L IS STM is here

Didn't know this...

By the way, I think you have had your 10-20 for a little while. How do you like it?
Great fun! In this recent shot, I was careful not to bump bulbous front elements, otherwise, I'd have gotten in closer. (Note: I did ask the subject if I may take a photograph, and she said, "I couldn't give a brass farthing.")

Canon’s upcoming announcements recap

Thank you for correcting my misconception about the R5c
:-) I take it that you checked the menus online. R5c is a beast of a camera, a camera that I greatly admire. The menu system is a beast too with a huge learning curve. Besides the complex menu, it also has permutations and combinations - if you select some resolution, some features are automatically disabled and the same for focus etc. This makes things tougher. So a person needs to learn the camera before working on it.

Canon Patent Application: Eye Control Focus Calibration Improvements

An old style rubber cup that completely seals around the eye would help with consistent pupil size, the only light would be from the EVF.
I think it's not a great solution for everyone because for example with wildlife we won't see an animal for a while and thin it could appear for less than a minute... I don't think anyone will keep their eye in the eyecup because they'll want both eyes to search for the next subject. I could be wrong - it's just my thinking.

Canon Patent Application: Dual Fisheye lens with AF

In this patent application (2024-052503), Canon is looking at providing autofocus for dual lenses, such as the Canon RF5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye lens. The current dual fisheye lens is manual focus only, so this would be a step in the right direction. From Canon; To provide a lens device that is equipped with an autofocus

Canon R5 Back Button Experience and (failure)

I have found a solution that works for me. The left AF ON button I assigned to AE Lock and hold, so i can toggle it off if i want/need to. Next I turned the joystick to be essentially “on” all the time without needing to press the AF Point button.

And my ‘solution‘ the have a BBF that works for me, is toi have set the * button on back to stop autofocus. It seems a better option than having to keep your thumb constantly on the *,( OK maybe not constantly). As was said - the R5 has a great AF system, and this solution works and allows all modes of focus that can be chosen from the AF Point select button. I am delighted at how it works for me! A bit unusual, but individuality make the world go round.

Canon U.S.A. Redefines Imaging Excellence at NAB 2024

Mainly, I've been posting silly things lately, but specifically the comment you replied to was inspired by someone that said they would go to Sony if Canon did announce whatever s/he wanted at the NAB show. I hope it's just one person thinking like this, but there is always the claim, "I'm sure there are more people like me!" We will find out if two days after the show every used photography shop in the world says, "we can't buy anymore used Canon products because of the NAB show..."

About switching between Nikon and Canon. Do you have trouble with the focus ring direction or any other differences??

Considering the focus of NAB, doubtful. ;)
