Article on F-Stoppers; R5 falling apart?

The comments are amusing. Like the guy who says, "The error 20 got more frequent and I eventually took it to Canon for repair and they replaced the shutter and the main PCB board of the camera, costing £630 and 6 weeks away. Not very reassuring for a camera less than a year old," then when asked about the warranty comes back with, "The camera was just out of warranty when I took it into repair." So the warranty is 'just less than a year' or you're having problems with a camera not yet a year old then decide to wait a few weeks for the warranty to expire before seeking repair. Ok.
Which confirms my suspicion about a money-fed slander campaign.
Far too many elements converge.
One more reason why I'll never again buy a S..y product.

Lens Error 60 (RF 85mm F2)

Thanks very much for the reply. I had the camera resting on my lap, so there is a strong possibility I was putting some pressure on the front of the lens. I also have a battery grip, so when I place the camera down on the table with the RF 85 F2 on, the camera leans forwards and rests some weight on the lens. Perhaps I should get the lens hood to help with this? A shame it’s not included.
A lens hood should almost always be on your lens, except perhaps when it's in its bag/case. I rarely shoot without it on any of my 4 lenses.

Opinion: Canon’s mounting woes

Canon has always been the worst for being aggressive against 3rd parties. Camera firmware updates or new camera releases would constantly break compatibility. Companies like Tamron and Sigma used to offer free AF chip upgrade services in the days before being able to flash new firmware into a lens. Canon is the reason third party makers started coming out with USB docks and, later, in-lens USB ports.

If a strong 3rd party ecosystem is important to you then Canon is not the right company to buy into.

Are two versions of the RF 35L coming? [CR1]

I find that corrections work with my Tamron lenses with the Tap-in Console.
It is only for newer lenses and they do not work at all without it.
That's great news! I didn't know that also Tamron got the in camera corrections, I was avoiding the recent EF Tamron's for that; you opened me new possibilities and alternative to Canon glass, thanks. So the camera shows the correct Tamron naming, like it does for Sigma lenses?

Review: Canon RF 15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM

"The 85 f2 with the extending barrel may be the most decent of the bunch, but...its an extending barrel 85..f2. Yuck."
Yes, the 85mm/2 is a great, sharp lens and the 1:2 "macro" is very useful.
I'm okay with the extending barrel if it keeps the lens smaller (as suggested by Neuro). There is one issue, though. A couple of times the lens barrel has extended when attached to a camera in my camera bag. I try to switch the camera off when placing it in the bag, because if the camera tries to focus, the lens extends and this doesn't sound healthy.
This is one of the reasons I bough the matching lens hood and keep that in the extended position almost all the time.

Canon Patent Application: More Super Telephoto Zooms

Thanks for the heads up. A 200-800 f/8 would be nice but I think a 200-800 f/9 would be easier to handle, weighing less and would take a 95mm filter.

I also think I would prefer f/9 in the long end for size, weight and handling (and price). But for sure, a lot of people will be complaining :)

Multiple RAW image resolutions coming to the Canon EOS R5 Mark II?

Who are we fooling? I'd never pick lower resolution.
But keep in mind that MP count ≠ resolution. For example, the 24 MP sensors in the R3 and R8 both out-resolve (in terms of actual spatial resolution) and thus provide more image detail than the 30 MP sensors in the 5DIV / EOS R.

Canon executives address third-party RF future

It's not about not understanding what you are suggesting, it's just that no consumer would care what's best for Canon. If closing their system and overcharging for their gear is best for them that's fine but any customer in their right mind wouldn't support them since it results in them missing out on great gear and them having to pay more for less.

So losing their advantage equals going completely bust to you? lol. Nikon was previously the strong number 2 with no chance of ever moving until Sony came along, so there's no reason why in the future that Sony couldn't take number 1 and knock Canon down to number 2. In fact it could be a great thing to happen since Canon would be forced to be more about the customer again.
Only the internet says that Canon has closed their system. The internet has been saying it for a few years now, despite the fact that Canon has never said it. They stopped lens makers from violating their AF patents. Manual focus lenses are being made and sold. They have publicly said they are open to negotiating licensing agreements with 3rd parties. So, in other words, we don't know yet. It took Nikon a few years to negotiate license agreements with 3rd parties, so we just have to wait and see.

The perception that Sony is more about the consumer than Canon is one that I just don't understand, other than the fact that Sony is "trendy" and "in.' and Canon is perceived to be "old fashioned." and "corporate." Canon has the most consumer friendly priced mirrorless lenses, including long telephoto lenses (600mm and 800mm) that allows consumers who would never have been able to get into bird and wildlife photography a chance to do so.. Canon has created 3 adapters for EF lens users, adding functionality to those EF lenses with 2 of those adapters - I don't see anyone else dong that for their customers. If you compare the pro lenses from Sony, Nikon and Canon, they are almost all in the same price range. (Yes, the really big super-teles are not, but almost all other lenses are.)

Companies and their stock holders are interested in the bottom line. Yes, that means Sony, too. Maybe that is why Sony has never spent the money on improving their ergonomics to the point where their customers can actually hold the camera comfortably for a few hours.

R5 Screen Issue?

Yes..they replaced the LCD panel. Camera is working fine now. Seems that this issue maybe some sort of manufacturing issue or design issue.
It was a common failure mode for iPhone displays a few years ago. Got mine replaced and the phone has been fine since. So I wouldn't worry about it too much.

At least on the R5 the touch feature can be disabled altogether, so if it were to happen again on a trip you could set the touchscreen sensitivity to [Disable] until it can be repaired (the other options are [Standard] and [Sensitive], aka glove mode).

Are two cameras going to replace the Canon EOS R5? [CR]

This is just an expection carried by the hope, not more. The conditions between the 5DM4 and R5 is different. That time, Canon had plans to move to the DSLM technologie and the stock needs to be get empty. The 5DM4 was quite cheaper as the R5. In 2018 i got my cam for €2800.- / ~$3000.- and the R5 i had payed €4400.- / ~$4700.- in Feb 2022. Quite different prices and development of them.
Nikon and Sony are around €1000.- cheaper and they are also fine systems. I owen a bunch of Canon cams (80D, 5Ds, 5Dm4,R,R5) and several lenses and other pheriperal gear from Canon and Sigma. To move to an other brand is very expensive, so my decision to continue using the brand and buy an R5 instead a Sony A7R4 was guided by the usage all of them without lacks. Sony A7R4 was around €1200.- cheaper as the R5 and i could use the newer Sigma lenses, that's actual not available for R-Systems.
The entire Canon R/RF-System is quit more expensive as previously - not just the body. The next Body i will buy, will never be canon again.
Sigma starts to produce Nikon Z Lenses. I maybe move to Nikon. I like the Z6-II and compare the prices between the Z6 and R5..

You said "Canon will not lower the price of the R5".

I merely observed that Canon has already lowered the price of the R5, at least in the U.S. in much the same way that they lowered previous models near the introduction of their successors. You continue to postulate that Canon will not lower the price of the R5. That's not up for debate. It's already a fait accompli. The R5 is $300 USD cheaper now than it was at introduction, and has also been offered with a free BG-R10 battery grip (List price $349 USD) more often than not over the past six months. I'd expect the BG-R10 deal will be back again in 'Black November'.

Canon cashback date in Spain

Hi everybody! I am planning to buy a new Canon EOS R8 in the Spanish market and I think that there is an upcoming cashback from Canon during the winter sales. Do you know in which dates is this cashback offered? Is it different for each country in Europe? I cannot find the past cashback dates in 2022 in Spain and it would great if I can save some money if I wait until November or so for buying it.

Thanks a lot.

Canon Patent Application: Motorized Tilt / Shift

I agree Samyang's mechanism is plastic-fantastic. If we are talking about Samyang's fragility in the original post, honestly, why would Canon solve Samyang's problem? Where we believe these lenses will go price-wise, if coming to fruition, Samyang customers will not buy them. :p :D

It's not just the beast mode to tighten, it's how people twist and torque (pitch/yaw) the knobs while adjusting. The screw looses its straightness and beyond the point of curvature, you cannot shift or tilt anymore as the adjustment knob cannot traverse beyond that point. I have seen it more for shift than tilt, given the smaller screws/knobs.

I think she ended up paying $50 as her part, she was/is a long-time CPS Platinum member from film era. When the lens came back, it was as good as new. Canon does take really good care of such customers.

On a side note, to me, looks-wise, TS-E 17 is the most beautiful lens, an "engineer's art work".
I paid about $900... Gaasp!

Canon announcements coming in late September [CR1]

I am more sensitive to people not wanting to adapt EF and EF-S lenses to these tiny new RF-S cameras.
The small footprints are part of their selling point.
I see your point, but at the same time if a person buys into the rf system without any intention of using an adapter before the lenses they want are available, it's hard for me to think they didn't just make a mistake.

Canon releases firmware v1.5.1 for the EOS R3

Went to a show in London a few months ago and when I was on the Canon stand was bemoaning the fact that newer cameras have options that I would expect on my R3 (pre-capture was one) and I asked when they thought firmware might be released to make them available. The answer I got was that they wouldn't be doing so as it was a Pro camera; and Pro's didn't need them as they always just "get the shot". Now I'm not a Pro, so not in a position to argue, but I would have thought that a Pro would want any tools available to ensure the best possible chance to "get the shot". Suspect the guy I was talking to didn't have a clue, I doubt it's Canon policy, but wasn't happy with the response.
He is clueless, and I too hope it‘s not Canon’s policy.

Canon EOS R5 firmware update [CR2]

Perhaps I should have been more careful in using the word "every". I am not a full time SW engineer but have done enough coding to see the advantages of modularisation. A custom solution makes sense where it makes sense. Your point about "tweaking" is exactly my point that it is a small change rather than total re-development. I would suggest that code for heat management and battery management would be essentially re-used if there are heat sensor(s) in the body and for the 3 types of battery that Canon uses.

HW will have different capabilities so developing an algorithm for AF detection will work on one processor but not all in their fleet. Clearly the code for the RP will be different to the Digic X platform.

KISS
i am a full time firmware coder and when i read this thread about cut & paste related to porting a firmware on a different model, it's seems that the most people don't know mutch about the hard work of firmware engineering. A firmware for a camera like an R5 is not as simple as coding an Arduino board or a Raspi.
Magic-Latern will be never work on hardware based upon their own developed RTOS called DryOS, that they use since 5DM4, 80D. What's different? The debug interface is not available in the production code and none know's the API's and the handling off. No documentation is public available. All of them was available from VXWorks, the RTOS that canon uses before.

But, i agree in that, that canon is went to an apple iphone price course. Expensive, hi-quality and properitary. But Apple support their devices for a long time - also releases new features if the hardware does'nt limit's.

R5; How To Select Single Focal Point While Using Viewfinder

Thanks for that recommendation. I didn’t realize I could backup my settings to a card! Wow, wish I’d known that for times I’ve sent in my other cameras over the years.
I’ll give this a try later today and let you know.
I just reset my camera settings and now things work as you have described!!
Thank you for your help!!
