Industry News: DJI to release the MAVIC Air 2s very soon

Absolutely right @Hector1970.
What a brilliant piece of kit. Can’t recommend the Mavic air 2 drone highly enough! I bought it from here and the ocusync 2.0 is phenomenal, I’ve no idea how it can be so good! At an ideal location, you can fly this thing 6km easily and you’ll have to turn around before losing signal because you won’t want to run out of battery! (At night you see this thing for miles due to its bright light so you can keep it in line of sight). I fly this out in the countryside with low interference or obstacles in the way, but even in built-up areas it performs seamlessly well, giving you clear footage from the drone - and will travel pretty far too, although I haven’t tested exactly how far.

Industry News: Lomography launches two new Instax cameras

I dunno about a tomography install unit, (except maybe the LomoGraflok 4×5 Instant Back back for use on LF view cameras)....but I've been eyeballing the quality install cameras from Mint,
Such as the InstantKon RF70

That thing looks like a way to get as much quality image on install film that you can in a still portable fashion.

Ah...so many toys, so little money....

canon lens query

I second what others have already suggested about taking a look at the 55-250 IS STM. If I was using a crop sensor camera and wasn't about to switch to full-frame, I think I would probably go for it over a 70-200, because the 55-250 IS STM is smaller, lighter, cheaper, I think the range would probably be more useful for me (particularly at the wide end), and the image quality is pretty good from what I have seen of it (my dad has one). The 70-200s have better build quality, even better image quality (although you need to ask yourself how much better you think it is) and wider maximum aperture. Obvioualy, you need to decide how important those things are to you.

Need help with M42 to RF adapter (vintage Helios-44-2)

These thinner ones is definetly a EF-M42 adapter, not RF. The marking "M42-EOS.R" on this thinner adapter is a lie. The flange distance in RF mount is 20mm, EF is 44mm, so RF-M42 adapter should be 24mm thicker than EF-M42.
However, you are still able to use M42 lenses with this thinner adapter on EOS-R Cameras, but you need to use an additional RF-EF adapter.

Problem with R7

Sounds very similar to the issues my R5 and R3 have had. It has gotten a little better with each firmware release. Unless it occurs frequently I would not bother returning it. The next one might be worse. I’m reconciled to living with it. Sometimes just opening the battery door will reset it without having to remove the battery.
Yes. Sending it back after one freeze would be ridiculous.

Canon issues a service notice for the Canon XF605, Canon Cinema EOS C70 & Canon EOS R5C

Hmmm - I wish they'd get around to fixing the "rare phenomenon whereby the R5 becomes inoperable due to random freezes"......

.... and as a little bonus, it would be nice if they fixed the "rare phenomenon whereby the IBIS unit reaches the limit of travel and then makes multiple attempts to reset itself, but needs to be rebooted to stop it"....

EF vs RF 50 1.8 STM MTF chart comparison

A truly new and good 50 1.8 without the macro capability probably could have launched for about $300 (with a sale price of $250 or so), and actually would have been worth buying over an EF 50 STM + adapter.
I don't mean to sound unfriendly but I can't figure out a nicer way to word it :-D Is there a "truly new and good 50" for $300" from any other make that shows significantly better image quality for anything like the same size and budget? What I'm seeing is that 50's are basically either double-Gaussian designs like we've had for 70 years, whereby 6-8 elements are kind of symmetrically repeated in a front half and back half that kind of match each other, or, completely new-school designs that are surely produced by computer algos and look like nothing in particular (such as the Leica 50/2APO, Otus 50/1.4, and Canon RF50/1.2). The new-school designs are far, far sharper, but also 3-4x the size of the old-style designs.

I've had the EF 50/1.8 MkI (pro build), 50/1.0, 50/1.4, 50/1.2, the new RF 50/1.2, and this. The RF 1.2 is 10x sharper than the rest but too big to carry and too expensive to break if I drop my backpack, etc. The RF 1.8 still produces far better images, to my eye, than my iPhone 13Pro, and I think it does a better job than any of my EF's. Not much, perhaps, but does.

That leaves the amount of bokeh from f/1.8. Well, in film days, to shoot friends at a dinner I'd need 800-1600 film, 1/15 at f/1.4, and between camera shake and huge grain you couldn't quite tell that DOF was also robbing you of sharpness. Today, with the 50/1.8 reliably hand-holdable at 1/6 on the R5, and practically no noise even at 2500, and of course 45MP, the sharpness lost to DOF is a lot more glaring. I simply never find myself suffering from bad subject motion, camera shake, grain and so on. If they come out with a new 50/1.4 I'm not sure I'd buy it, unless it's far sharper, and if it is I'm sure it will be far bigger. If it's much bigger at all, even the size of the EF50/1.8 on adapter, I'd probably put it in my camera bag not my backpack.

Given how much shallower it is mounted on the camera, for me the RF is a huge win even if costs more. Mine was quite cheap though.

Canon Launches Five Versatile 4K Camcorders

I do shoot video occasionally, but almost never on my ILCs. I may pick up the Vixia HF G70 to replace my aging Vixia HF M41.
It's been a while since I looked at camcorders. So I had another look, and agree with the posts above that there's really not a significant benefit to the HF G70 over the HF G50. The basics are identical – same sensor, same lens, same video formats, same dual SDXC media. The bigger, high resolution screen is nice, but even my old HF M41 has easily enough resolution to properly compose shots. USB-C transfer is nice, but since unlike my M41 these don't have internal memory, a USB-C card reader will do just as well.

But comparing the G50 and G70 got me thinking about the numerical gap between them, so I went looking for the G60. Turns out that will better meet my needs, which include a fair bit of low light video. The G60 has a lower zoom ratio with a slight bias to the wider end (15x from 25.5mm equivalent vs. 20x from 28mm equivalent), and a slower lens (f/2.8-4.5 vs. f/1.8-2.8), but that's driven by the larger sensor (1" vs. 1/2.3"). I really dislike the vacuum tube-based sensor sizing that is an irrelevant anachronism, but the G60 sensor is 4x the area of the G50/70 sensor, the equivalent to the difference between FF and m4/3. Since I frequently argue the benefits of FF over APS-C in low light, going with the larger sensor is a logical choice for me.

I know I can use the FF sensor in my R3 for video and have a much larger sensor, but the form factor of a camcorder just works better for me, as does the convenience of having a 25.5-383mm superzoom lens.

I did look at other brands, but almost all the camcorders with a 1" sensor are 'pro' models with XLR inputs, a rigging handle, etc., i.e. a much larger form factor. There's a Sony model similar in size and form to the G60, but with a 12x zoom starting at 29mm. Add to that the fact that I already have Canon mini-shoe accessories like the directional mic and video light that are compatible with the G60, and I decided to stick with Canon.

The B&H Deal Zone today for a 2-pack of 128 GB UHS-II v90 for $189 goes well with the G60, so I ordered both and B&H shipped them this evening.

The Canon EOS R5c is coming in Q1 2022 [CR3]

I'm getting the Overheat issue. I shot motocross all week last week and through the weekend. After an hour of shooting I was getting my overheat warning. Does not matter what battery I use, does not matter what lens I use. Temps were 100 all week/weekend. I do have a wrap on my camera. But i've been shooting in these temps all summer and this is the 2nd weekend I've gotten overheat warnings. I have somewhere around 80k pics through this camera since Mid February when I purchased it.
The overheat warning is meaningless if you are only shooting photos.

Would you purchase another R5

Do you really measure your exposure by judging how bright the image is in the viewfinder? I suppose we are all different but I rely on the camera's metering system to set the correct exposure.
With wildlife photography there are many, many cases where the meter gets fooled - like the iridescence of a kingfisher against greenery or the whites of swan. If you forget to set exposure compensation for backlit subjects - it is immediately obvious with EVF. Also with EVFs you have the option of setting blinkies warning of over exposure on highlights, or having an in-EVF histogram for ETTR. Some people don't like these things in the viewfinder, I am one of those who approaches the VF (OVF or EVF) as a compositional tool and use these functions as and when the situation needs it.

L Lens Packaging and Hoods, Cost-cutting Effort?

Did the goods arrive damage-free? If yes then let us look for ways to reduce the carbon footprint.
Well, as far as I can tell for now. The wobble factor initially concerned me. I know it's L glass, but I do prefer the solidity of the Styrofoam.
Perhaps they could make the plastic more form-fitting.
Also, I'm not into waste, either. I keep all of my boxes and packaging in case of resale, I never throw them away.

Nikon Releases Z 800mm at 1/3 Cost of Canon’s

Here are two images with the 800mm PF. PF lenses can have an odd bokeh from specular highlights, but it's a very limited case that I have only seen with photos of backlit shorebirds using the 500 PF. I have not tested the 800mm PF in that scenario.

Good images.

TBH for 1/3rd the cost & 1/2 the weight of the original EF 800mm I see this as a winner even when it's 1/3rd stop slower.

Canon has slowed down two noteable lenses by 1/3rd stop.

- 200/1.8 to 200/2.0

- 50/1.0 to 50/1.2

For the purpose of comparison here's the weight of select RF L & EF L the long lenses

The Canon RF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM appears to be getting closer [CR3]

Weight difference of the past 25 years of select Canon EF & RF lenses.

Bonus: NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S

I would not be surprised that these RF lenses will be less than 2.2 kilograms when released within 20 months

- RF 500mm f/4.0L IS USM
- RF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM
- RF 200mm f/2.0L IS USM

Canon will release an RF mount ‘vlogging’ camera in 2022 [CR3]

[..]I want a phone that fits in my shirt pocket. [..]
Since I started selecting shirts to be able to fit a Kindle, I noticed that it isn't so much the size that makes keeping a phone in your shirt pocket annoying, it's the weight and grip. Bend over slightly and that glass and metal brick will come sliding out at warp speed!

EOS R7

Has anyone else noticed how Canon seems to have no problem supplying R7s with 18-150 lenses to all their retailers but have been back ordered for many months for bodies only?
Love Canons products but hate their greed! Wish I wasnt so heavily invested in canon equipment, if I had it to do over I would've gone with Sony.
Previously stores would unbundle it and sell the lens as 'white box', Canon started discouraging that a few years ago. Canon also strongly discourages listing things below the MAP they set.

The upside to that is that stores are more likely to offer you a discount when you ask, although with demand outstripping supply currently they can just wait for someone with slightly more money and slightly less sense to show up.
