Video Resolution Comparison: 5D Mark III vs. Nikon D800

I don't think the 5D3 is worth more than the D800, but that's not the perfect camera for me either.

So far my choice has been... wait patiently, and in the meantime upgrade from my 550D (T2i) to a NEX-5N, which is a very nice step up for video (which is what I shoot), and cost me just about nothing (once I make sure there are no huge drawbacks and sell my old Canon)

1DX vs D4

drjlo said:
A little disappointed to see how much cleaner D4 looks when pushed 3 stops over 1Dx. On the other hand, it's shocking to see 1Dx AF is "3 times faster" than D4, especially considering they were using 85L, which is not a AF speed demon by any stretch. That higher battery voltage must really push the AF well..
They were using 70-200 2.8 for this test :)

Wide Canon L choice: 14L II 2.8 or 16-35 II 2.8

I just bought the 16-35II today. So far I'm impressed with it, and lovin the 16mm wide end.
Mine shipped today, so it should be here by Friday. I never warmed up to my 17-40mmL, so I am hoping I like this one. Right now, I have a old Tokina 17mm f/3.5 Prime that I do like, but I have a use for the zoom.

Nice. I was hoping to get the 24-70II first but it's not happening. I do like the UW end of it and should keep me happy for the next couple of months.

Just a prediction, and I'm not trying to be debbie downer. You will use the wides end of the 16-24 90% of the time. And as time goes by, you will notice that you'll wish it was a bit wider... Next thing you know you will be wishing for the 14...

This aside, enjoy the new lens...

Thanks, your probably right. I'm hoping that Canon brings out a 14-24L. ;)

Prediction of future APS-C bodies after Canon EOS-M announcement.

Now that we have the EOS-M here is my thoughts on the future of Canon's APS-C line.

The XXXXD line (T3) will be replaced by the EOS-M. (Logical based on the pricing and compatibility with EF lenses)

The XXXD line will take on the features found in the XXD line. (Logical based on the features found on the new Rebel, it's closer to a merge of a 7D and 60D in a smaller body)

Very possible merger of the XXD line and XD line into the 7D mark II. The 70D (if there is one) will not replace or be better than the 7D replacement. The 7D has been and will remain the flagship APS-C camera for Canon. (The 7D is one of the most popular cameras Canon has ever made, they will continue with the namesake for it's replacement)

The replacement of the 7D will not be FF nor APS-H as the marketing for the 7D has been towards EF-s users. Too many current 7D owners own/use EF-s lenses. (I am one) It would not make for a good marketing shift for Canon to change the body into a different crop of sensor from the APS-C. This is about Canon making money and the smartest choices to convince users to upgrade. If Canon is going to introduce another FF body or "bring back" the APS-H, they will simply call it something other than the 7DX (X being whatever)

If there is a 70D (and based on the August release of the version 2 firmware update for the 7D) it will push the 7D2 into 2013 or possibly 2014. I don't see that happening. There would be little reason for Canon to release such an extensive firmware update IF they were going to announce the 70D anytime soon. The 70D would have to exceed the current 7D in features and speed. (And the 70D will not be FF nor APS-H for the same reason, current XXD users who own/use EF-s lenses) My opinion is that they are trying to keep current 7D users happy while they develop a replacement for the 7D later this year or the beginning of 2013.

I think Canon is shifting the playing field from APS-C bodies to more FF bodies. The rumors of an "entry-level" FF is what makes this future interesting. I can't see Canon having too many camera bodies directly competing with each other. From what I have seen in the past, they like to spread out the choices. Canon taking away (merging) the XXD line will slim out the crop sensor field and make room for more FF cameras.

So goodbye Canon and welcome Nikon. I like the products of Canon more, but really can't take their policies.

Thanks for sharing. Hopefully, your gear will always work flawlessly - or maybe your research on 'policies' didn't extend to service performance.
If you think nikon is bad you really don't want to try fuji

Settings used for Time Lapse Still Photography...

bchernicoff said:
So far I've used manual, but then I haven't done what that changes from day to night.

As far as interval goes...a good place to start is when you know how long your final video is going to be. For instance if your goal is to make a 2 minute timelapse that plays at 24fps, you know that you will need to capture 2880 images (120s X 24fps). Next, if you know how much time you plan to capture, you can divide. So, if you want to capture 3 hours which is 10800 seconds, you divide 10800 by 2880 and get 3.75s for an interval. Round up or down as you like.

Interesting...I was coming from the opposite approach and can't figure out the math...

I hadn't planned how long the clip would be...I was just interested in capturing everything no matter how long it took.

Let's say I have 1000 images....taken at 12s apart...what would be the ideal length of the video (and accodingly, how long should each image last on screen 1 sec or a fraction of a second) so things would look smooth at 24fps...or 30 fps....?

Thanks for the reply!

Noob here. Feedback appreciated

A reflector, or even a $2 sheet of big construction paper (white) would have solved this no problem. :)

If you filled in her face with that paper, or small reflector, you could have balanced out the photo a bit and drawn us with light, to her face and eyes a lot more. Other than that, there are millions of ways to do any photo "differently". But that's what I would have done.

Or, if you could get her to listen, and not squint, then turning her the other way, with her chin up a little bit to get a nice shape/shadow that defines the face and doesn't have bad eye shadows, it would have worked too, but I rarely see that done well with kid photos, simply because they cannot express it properly.

Battery problems... How long does your 5D Mark III battery last?

Daniel Flather said:
I can get 700+ shots before I'm under 10% on my battery, and I'm still playing in the menus a lot as it's a new camera. The shot total per charge and percent is shown in the battery info in the menu.

I wonder if it makes a difference if:
shooting RAW only or RAW+ JPG?
To one card or CF + SD?
Haven't tested this till now.
I'm usually shooting RAW to CF and JPG to SD and getting nowhere near to 1k
Its more around 500-600 (some HDRs, but no video or liveview normally, but lots of setting changes and Display use)
When using a SD with several Eye-Fi transmissions I'm down to 200 or less

Just curious.
Any thoughts?

New 5D Owner. Why can't I autofocus? [video included]

wickidwombat said:
why didnt you just ask for a full replacement?
In the Dutch example I posted the camera eventually was returned and got replaced immediately under warranty. I'd try and give 'em a call, as wickidwombat suggests, because if you pay 3K+ for a camera you shouldn't have to wait for weeks for it... hope it works out for you :)

if i really wanted a compact and solid powerful camera.
i would go to OM-D from olympus. Not for an old sensor wrapped in new shell.

Most power comes here from the lens selection, which BTW makes it no pocketable anymore. :)

Let me re-quote myself:

If they were to front up with a decent, discreet EVF and a small triplet like the Perar below, I'd actually, surprising to myself, consider this.

*IMAGE REMOVED*

If we had a couple of really simple lens designs, even if only manual focus, I think this could still be considered pocketable. The OM-D body is much larger (if it was full-frame, I'd forgive them).

I personally don't mind carrying around large cameras, as I still use medium format film, but it would be a handy addition if everything was "right."

And u think Eos-m is pocketable with all the adaptors.
who care if some body wanted shitty old sensor which fairly poor low light quality.

go ahed fan boy, buy two or more. At least canon might compensate the losses from 5d3.

I think you misunderstood me. I was referring to the possible development of lenses that of a low profile similar to the MS Optical Perar (10mm), to be designed specifically for the EOS-M (ie. no EOS-M adapter) and leaving it with an overall depth of just over 40mm. I have a wallet that, when crammed with notes, cards and receipts, measures that wide - still fits in my pocket.

In terms of the sensor, I think you will find it is pretty, bloody good for a mirrorless. They could certainly do more, I do not deny, but as an entry into the mirrorless market, I don't think the sensor is the main concern here. I would like to see a rangefinder or at least an optical viewfinder, as well as a small pop-out flash, amongst other things.

I am no fan-boy and probably wouldn't buy one of the things mentioned above being included (which may result from a higher end version released in the future). I will say one thing, though - I don't think the 5D Mark III is a loss for Canon, with both it and the D800 selling in high numbers.

I think you need to start taking some photos.
