The ultimate Photokina bet poll...

hey why's everyone only talking about the big bodied professional and semi professional cameras what about the midrange cameras like the G1X, the EOS M and the now hinted at Powershot G12+ there are some of us who dont want dont need, cannot justify a big bodied camera but do want to control what we shoot and do want a reasonable IQ.
For me that means that if Canon do announce a PS G12+ I'll be a happy bunny and won't have to move to Nikon or Sony to satisfy my need for a replacement for my G11.

Avoid them at all costs! They kill flashes and aren't consistant for a hefty price. PW even admitted to me over the phone that the canon TT line had problems. I returned them.

Used them for years with my 5d M2.. I know that people in the US had problems but mine are EU versions and I've never had any issues whatsoever.
I've read somewhere it's not about PW version, it's about the country you live in (due to frequencies used in PW). I'm not 100% sure about this.

Should I stay with Canon or moving to Nikon

Do you use magic latern? Is it worth installing on the 60D?

Argh - ml is the absolute killer, just install it. It even improves still image quality because the ml isos are *better* than the Canon isos due to different digic configurations!

thanks. I´ll install it after getting my 60D repaired (stop down button has no function anymore).

85mm f/1.2 ii or 135mm f/2

NY Wedding Photographer said:
The 85mm 1.2 II is very is Extremely sharp wide open, at least my copy is. It all depends which body you use, for example those that say the 85mm 1.2 II is "no so sharp" wide open probably use a low level dslr like the 5DII.
I use a 1Dx and 5D3, Crazy sharpness, I also have the 135mm. the 85mm gets most use for casual portraits but for fashion its the 135mm, and the 200mm f/2.
all these lenses are crazy sharp. Most versatile, is the 85mm. Get that!

Wait...

What? "Low level dslr like the 5dii" as a cause of a lack of sharpness?

Give me a 5d2 and the 85 1.2, and I'll give you an image so sharp you'll need to view it with safety goggles on.

I bought a 24-70mk1 and it is working perfectly fine now but...

Roger Cicala of LensRentals have explained why & how the 24-70 go 'soft' in the long end in this article:
http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2011/10/the-limits-of-variation
I had my 24-70 checked and they replaced 3 bushings. Waiting for the lens get through the line and the workshop: 3 days. Actual work time: less than 1 day.

Nikon D7000 vs Canon 7D In the AF Area + Others

Danielle said:
Contrary to popular belief, you can't simply rely on your fancy camera to nail it for you regardless.

No I haven't tried the d7000 for real but I'm a content owner of a 7d. Personally I think the 7d has a great af system particularly for it's price. If you learn properly how to use it is definitely a good system. Do I ever swear at it? Oh yes! Is it faultless? Oh no... Of course not. Would I expect a 1dx af system to be faultless at all times? No.

I have had experience recently with a nikon d90, it's af system isn't on the same plane as the 7d. My partner was having trouble tracking really fast (I mean fast) penguins in the water at our city's aquarium. They couldn't do it, I showed them even with an af system nowhere near the capabilities of my 7d... It can be done. I got some clear of some extremely energetic penguins in the water. Actually clearer than the shots I got with my 7d because there was a cpl filter on the nikon, I don't have one myself.

What am I suggesting? I'm suggesting who cares, yes buy a camera which suits your needs, but before, after and during, skills matter more. Btw, the d300s has a better af than the d7000.

I agree to an extent.

I want to word my opposition this way though. A better camera will get you out of an adverse situation more so than a lesser camera, skill being constant. You can be skilled as hell but you're not getting any good shots during a soccer game that starts at 12 noon. However, if I have a 1DX with me, and someone else has a 7D, my shots are going to look good and his aren't, accepting that we are shooting equally into bad sun angles and we both have the same talent/skill. This is of course with post-processing too. Technology does matter.

I do agree, however, that basic photography skills should be mastered first. After that, the camera does actually matter.

Where can I find a 24-70 Series 1 sample file?

Sample images won't tell you much, many of the lenses are not up to par, all of the lenses have curvature of field. Lens testers have had a tough time trying to find even one good one, even after sending them to Canon for adjustment.
I have some from the 5 24-70mm L lenses I've had, but they are so bad, I don't post them.
The really good ones (apparently there are some) don't seem to appear on the used market.
I'll not consider the new one until I see a few carefully done tests.

Canon 5D Mark III - Soft images

In an ironic twist, my problem went away once I turned AFMA off.
Same here ... disabling AFMA worked for me when I used 5D3 with the 25-105 f/4 L lens ... but all of my other lenses work better with AFMA enabled

That just means the 24-105 is a good match for your 5DIII. You just set Adjust By Lens and leave the 24-105 at zero. Personally, my 85L II and 135L require no adjustment on my 1D X, my other lenses do.

Just got the Reikan Focal PRO i just did the camera/adjusted(all) haven't tried the lens yet, does it give you the same results? just wondering if they'll have an update so we don't have to manually set, but otherwise it's money well spent.

IMAX is 220 megapix, Canon's max STILLS are 22 megapix.

I sure hope no one is expecting 200+ MP in a 35mm format sensor... heck medium format may be too small... sensors can always improve, DR can be steadily increased, but sensor density, for this size format and quality, is starting to get to max out otherwise as we see with the 24MP APS-C sensors, they just get crappy quickly.

Macro Photography - DLA vs. pixel density considerations for camera upgrade

A camera with a larger sensor does not overcome the diffraction problem.

Reason being - with a FF camera (and same 100/2.8 lens) you'll be closer to your subject for the same framing (field-of-view) which reduces DOF. This offsets the gains made by higher fstop permitted by lower pixel density.

Same goes for landscape photography.

1DX & 500mm f/4L IS II Varsity Football

Here's a few shots from yesterdays Varsity Scrimmage shot with the 1DX and 500mm f/4L IS II:

How is the AF compared to an f/2.8 lens such as the 400 f/2.8?

-PW

I don't own the 400mm f/2.8 but I have demoed it, however I do have a 300mm f/2.8L IS version one. The AF on the 500mm f/4II feels equally as fast as the 300mm f/2.8 during the day. I haven't tried the 500mm f/4II at night yet. The AF of the 500mm f/4II is extremely fast and feels instantaneous, whether in AI Servo or One shot. When I press the shutter button in One Shot the AF confirmation beep occurs simultaneously with the shutter press. There is no lag whatsoever, as a matter of fact it does feel "a little" faster than the 300mm f/2.8 and I can't believe I just wrote that (all bets are off for night games). When I press the shutter button in One Shot with the 300mm f/2.8I, the sensation is shutter-press then an instant beep, with the 500mmII it feels as though the shutter-press is actually causing the beep without any lag.

Now, with the 500mm II in AI Servo when tracking the player, if you loose the player for a second and then have to reacquire him, there is a longer delay with the 500mm f/4L as the glass moves forward and backward to reacquire focus (I have focus search off which is recommended for super-telephotos in order to prevent extreme de-focusing, for extreme de-focusing I reacquire with the Manual Focus ring). I don't view this as a concern with it's AF ability, as I feel it has more to do with the longer focal range, just taking a little longer to re-lock onto the target. In other words the de-focused 300mm f/2.8I will move back and forth faster so it re-acquires faster and of course it's also easier to track your subject with a wider FOV angle.

70-200mm f/2.8L IS II not fitting securely to 5DMKIII body???

lopicma said:
This would be a problem if the lens/body combo is supposed to be weather sealed! I was under the impression all the white "L" series lenses are water sealed. I don't know about the 5D.

They are weather sealed, not water sealed. Dust, sand, mist, rain etc.. are mostly blocked. They are certainly not weather/waterproof and care must still be taken. I have been in steady rain as well as off road dust storms without anything getting into my 1 series bodies.

Even with some wiggle I have not had any issues whatsoever with weather getting into the body and affecting the images. A bit of wiggle in the lens/body mount does not mean that it is not still weather sealed.

How to complete my lens lineup? Help!

I understand from your post - that your basic next step is to upgrade the canon 50mm 1.8 by adding additional fast primes, for people pictures.

You seem to have a nice collection of glass - in quality zooms.

The 85mm L is a slow focusing lens, probably not best for shooting kids, who tend to move around and require a more casual style of shooting.

I would recommend the 35L and 50mm 1.4 - both very useful on a crop for portraits and kids shots. I have them both used on a rebel. The 85mm 1.8 is somewhat tight but also an option. On a FF is more usable.

will we see a entry level FF camera from canon at photokina?

Canon is very tight lipped.... they are not know for uncontrolled leaks. A few happen... but they have at times totally bewildered the photo trade as well. I attended dinners, as Canon's guest, back in the 70's and 80's, for product rollouts that we had ZERO clue on. Other items, my rep would say, "we're gonna have a new (whatever) out in the fall... maybe Photokina, maybe PMA", and that was that.

Didn't they knock one out of the park with the Rebel/300D ? That was a leakproof milestone for Canon.

So, ya just can't tell.... ya gotta wait.

In Seoul

from backstage at event I am involved in Korea, the choir and a very enthusiastic drummer. Have processed in colour and black and white and like both. I suspect the colour is stronger but still like the black and white:
