if the mkiii comes with that 24/105mm option for a good price around 4000 i will get it, hey i am making a big upgrade from a t2i to maybe this or just get the mkii combo kit on bh,

4000 would be an attractive price, but I'm guessing it'll be closer to 4300, close to the difference between the current 5dII body and kit.

i can only dream only way to find out is couple hours when the event happens :] but even at 4300 thats not a bad deal 3500 for the body and 24/105mm is priced around 1050 on bh thats not a bad kit

DR and RAW bit depth on Canon's forthcoming...

Flake said:
"You need every scrap of DR you can get your hands on."

Well if you really do need every scrap here's something to consider.

The full exposure of a DSLR camera is acheived when just one of the three RGB channels reaches the 255 value (or close to it), so it makes sense to attept to try to balance the three colours which will give a higher DR. In situations where the white balance is not optimum, a return to using the old correction filters will help, tungsten having more red channel and fluoresecent having more blue. Removing these colour casts means that the light reaching the sensor is more 'balanced' there is no colour peak in one of the channels & therefore more headroom.

I guess thats an option. Some concerns with that would be the effect of an additional filter element in front of the lens...greater chance for flaring, reduction in contrast or sharpness due to the quality of the filter (which can be very high, but very rarely as high as the glass in the lens itself), etc. With 35mm film, resolution was generally not as high as it is today (with a few exceptions), so the impact of a filter on resolution, vs. the ability to correct white, was not a big deal. With incredibly high resolution sensors today, the quality of all the optics in front of them matters more and more.

What is the new 5d3 Groundbreaking Feature that will shake the industry?

Bonnau_Photo said:
Absolutely nothing ground breaking or game changing in those specs..
The link to Teds doesn't work anymore so who knows if those specs are legit at all even.. Going to be interesting to see what the real (complete) specs say...

I still do count on the Future Prediction Feature.

5D Split? 5D X & 5D Mark III [CR1]

This seemed to be spot on for the 5D III

I'm just glad Canon didn't decide to go with a high MP camera to compete with the Nikon D800 (s). I think the latest specs are confirmed. And Canon will be delivering a 5D3 with better native ISO (100-25,800...expandable to 102,xxx). Better than I expected. Bettering the native ISO spec of the Nikon D3s/D4.

Will be interesting watching the live cast tonight.

One item to add to my "gift to self xmas list"...I think next week Apple will be announcing the iPad 3 (2nd gift to self). :) Then, later this year, the iPhone 5 (will they finally give us at least a 4.5" screen & 4G LTE support?). Great year for techies...

Your opinion about my lenses and my photography attitude?

I had the 50/1.8 (with my 400D) and it was a good start, but I couldn't arrange with the focal length.
It was too close for me indoors, and even outdoors it was either too close or not close enough! That's the reason I bought a 28mm and right after that the 100mm, so I walk around with one of them :-). The 28mm gives me a nice to use 44mm full frame equivalent.
I'll probably will get a 50mm when I am going full frame, but as said the 80mm full frame equivalent didn't suit me, and now I am wondering for what you are using the 7D + 50mm indoors? :-)

50mm can be use on crop bodies as a portrait lens. 85mm can be used for head shots. The 50 and 85 on a crop would be similar to the 85 and 135 on a full frame. It takes some getting used to if you're used to shooting wider focal lengths, but the change in perspective can be refreshing.

Yeah, but a 50mm on a crop has a view of an 85, but the perspective of a 50, and for tight portraits that's not the best combo. The 85 or 135 (even your 200L) on a FF would be much better.

Availability (Based on past releases)?

kidnaper said:
With the 1D X being announced in, what, October with the release in April? I won't say it will be that drastic, but I'm assuming the Mk.III will start to trickle out in May, and I'll hopefully get my paws on one before June. That's just wishful thinking though. With supply and demand it may not be until this fall.

I doubt and hope it will not be that late. D800 is out March 22 and D800E is out in April. So I would expect Canon would be working very hard to have the new 5D out by March.

Canon 5d Mark III vs Nikon D800!!!

two totally different cameras. one is for fast low light photography where a low MP count high fps is key. The other is a detail monster for landscape studio.

apples vs oranges being compared on their grape taste.

There is nothing wrong in comparing these two ..we are comparing one camera vs another ..not apple vs orange ..depends on your taste , whether you are hungry for speed or resolution...you are going to vote according to that

While these are two different cameras seemingly targeted towards different people based on their seemingly different features, I think the similar price and product positioning relative to the rest of the company's lineup makes the comparison legit.

While more Megapixels are great, especially for crops and large prints, I personally would go for the 5D Mark III over the Nikon D800. 20 or so megapixels is enough for my needs, and I would rather have higher ISO and a faster burst rate than more MP. While we obviously have to wait for test shots to compare and contrast - oh, and an official spec list! - I'm really looking forward to the Mark III.

PowerShot S100 reviewed and compared to the S95

The vast majority of compacts have similar amounts of shutter lag.

There is one that I know of that does not - the Panasonic lx5. It's not "jeans pocketable", but it's still "could possibly cram it in a jeans pocket would just be really uncomfortable to walk around like that" sized.

Imaging resource's timing gave it's shutter lag timing almost the same as an entry level dslr - and more importantly I tried it out myself at my local camera store next to a Canon t2i and could not tell the difference in focus speed (unlike the s95, g12, and Nikon p7000 where I could tell the difference in focus speed). The lx5 has similar low light performance to the s100 (though not the s100's new noise reduction, which sounds like it would be a plus for you).

Good to know! I've been debating between the S100 and the LX5 for quite some time, going back and forth many times. Shutter lag (not just auto focus) is the big thing for me but I haven't been able to do a side by side comparison of the cameras (or even find either of them seperately in a local store...). The ONE thing I wish the LX5 had was the front control ring that I could set to aperture. That's one design the S95/S100 really did right. It feels like going back to my Contax RTS and controlling aperture on the lens, and shutter speed on the dial... Oh well, I'm sure I can get used to the LX5's control, it seems pretty easy to switch between the two controls on that rear dial.

CR99999999!!!!!!!!!5D3 tomorrow!!!!!

FINALLY!!! The night when suddenly all the specs and pics are revealed, perhaps as a result of the expire of the NDA. Now the 12 hour countdown to the Shanghai event!!! Can't wait for Canon to explain how this new baby is a game changer with speed and quality. I sure hope it would have a better metering/shutter life like the Nikon. That said the new 5D is not in the same breed as the D800, they go in different directions. Would Canon bring out a high MP '3D' that is actually competing against the D800 besides the 4K camera?

The 61-pts AF and 6fps are sure killer features, and is more than enough. 6.9fps or higher than that is simply an overkill. I wish it is capable of controlling the new 600/590EX through radio as well, mentioned at phototips.com. Be sure to watch Craig and James' live show 11pm EST tonight!

Other "nitpicks" ;D: "Only" 1080p video, only USB2.0, only CF+SD cards, no XQD, only yada-yada. :P

Agreed but pretty minor squabbles really. I take out my CF cards to dump anyways so the USB speed isn't a factor for me.

I kinda like the idea of SD in conjunction with the CF. SD is so common and cheap - good for just having in the body to dump JPEGS on for RAW+JPEG. Hopefully it has a mode where RAW can go to CF and JPEG can go to SD. If the CF breaks, then you have the SD as safety. So long as both can write at the 6FPS and record in the highest video mode, then that's all that's needed.

As for video...I'm not a video person so the 4K video thing isn't also an issue for me :)

What a great camera though - perfect for my needs. Can't wait to get two of them - I already have buyers lined up for the 5D2 :D

Upgrades on the 5Dii

Hey!

Do you think that with this 5Diii coming around, Canon will keep on updating the 5Dii?

I had read somewhere (rumor, probably) that they were waiting for the 7D to sell and age before releasing a firmware that'd allow, for example, 60fps video shooting on the 5D.

I know some third party firmware allow that (though, i'm not to confident in going for non-canon options).

Do you guys have any info/thoughts on that?

5Diii movie functions - realistic?

It's almost certainly a data throughput issue. Right now I think the processors are the bottleneck (for encoding), but if they get even a little better it won't take long for the interface between the camera and the memory card to become the weak link (although I think you could reach 1080/60p before hitting that limit). Ironically, I think the most exciting thing about XQD as a format is that it's internally based on PCIe, which is theoretically capable of speeds well over 1GB/s (read: it won't be the bottleneck for a looooong time, it's way more than enough throughput for 4k/240p if someone could actually build a card fast enough to take advantage of it).

Will the suggested 5d III specs satisfy your photograpy needs?

but thats my point the sensor tech needs to improve to address the issues that cause the APS-C sensor to be inferior to the full frame and APS-H sensors. just taking the same tech and making it bigger would be horrible.

Oh, certainly...I wasn't advocating that. I was using it as a basis from a resolution standpoint, at 116lp/mm, you would need a 47mp sensor to have the same pixel pitch. I would most certainly expect such a sensor to be "modern" in every sense of the word, pushing the envelope wherever possible...to enlarge three year old tech would be unacceptable.
