LULZ Nikon Used Canon 5D Mark II DSLR Footage to Launch D800!

http://www.steves-digicams.com/news/whoops_nikon_uses_canon_dslr_footage_to_launch_d800.html

Whoops.

Seems Nikon is not only using Canon EOS-5D Mark II-captured video from TSO's film 'The Mountain' to sell their new camera, but they never asked his permission and are, therefore and perhaps more disgracefully, violating his copyright.

Will you purchase the 5D Mk III?

very pleased with the spec, not so much with the price
considering D800
I'll wait until detailed reviews are out: I have a feeling the 5D3 could lose to the D800 in absolutely all aspects of image quality (resolution, dynamic range, noise), and only win in ergonomics and usability (which are important, but not so much when offset by price and IQ)

Flash triggering of older flashes

Forgive me if I missed this somewhere in the storm of information this morning, but does anyone know:

Can the new 5D3 can trigger older flashes (430EX, EXII, 580EX, EXII)? ... using the old protocol (non radio). I believe the 7D can do this, right?

I really don't need another flashgun, just for the radio thing, and the 430EX that I have can only work on camera, or as a slave (not master), so this would be really handy...

My wife's D80 has all this built in, and its years old. I'm getting a bit fed up with Canon short changing us on things like this...

5d Mark III AEB, what gives? Am I missing something?

Preface: 5D3 looks to be an IQ beast. Great job.

Now... As a software engineer, nothing peeves me more than limitations I know are purely in the firmware of a camera.

You want me to change 3 lines of code for you Canon? It won't take me 4 years either. I'll do it for free.

Hardware limitations I get... But when I know the marketing department has purposely castrated the camera to play an angle it's really disappointing. You might actually have some competition now, act like it! Those improvements are FREE to you! Good Lord, at least grab the low-hanging fruit and continue focusing on actual technological innovations.

This goes for a lot more than just bracketing. It looks like there are less intuitive ways of making that work, but my firmware wish list grows by the day.

5D3 available later this month?!!?

According to biccamera.com, the 5D3 is gonna be available by the end of this month (March) for Japan at least.

http://www.biccamera.com/bicbic/jsp/w/d_camera/canon/eos5dmarkiii/index.jsp

March release seems pretty fast. If anyone else can read Japanese and make sure I didn't read it wrong (I'm a foreigner living in Japan). Can anyone else confirm release dates?

And I'm really not liking that 358,000 yen price tag. That puts it closer to $4500 US for body only over here. Perhaps I'll be buying it from the US instead afterall. ::)

600EX-RT and ST3-RT

While I'm happy Canon finally switched to radio transmission, I really wish they would had worked with an existing company (i.e. POCKETWIZARD!!!!) so it would be less of a closed loop system and more open to allowing other lights. Almost making the transmitter into something like Paul C Buff's cyber commander.

The 100ft also disappoints me. Shooting basketball I have issues with PW at times, who knows if the Canon system will even work if the PW have issues receiving a signal when they are rated a 1/15 the distance as a PW.

Why all the hate for still camers?

I agree. I would love to go back to the world of a Still Camera. I FINALLY bought a digital camera because I thought that that camera was "there-there" (5D Mark II) with digital still imaging at a price I could almost afford! LOL!. The quality I sought was in that camera. The first thing I did was go into the menu and disable the video button, (one less way to make an error). I come from an era where still shooters were still shooters and film/video was something completely different. They certainly were (are still are in my mind), two astoundingly different disciplines/art-forms.
Not long after I made my major camera purchase did I come to find out that "my" cherished still camera was one of the hottest video cameras going and that people were shooting commercials, TV shows and Movies with it? I just scratched my head, kept shooting and wondered if my camera could have cost about $1000 less if it was EVERYTHING that was a still-camera and non of the video capabilities?????
I have to say, with the video button disabled, I though that the camera was an un-compromised still camera.
So..if the new 5D Mark III had no video would it sell for $2500????? I will never know. I just have to accept that it is a new world of combo cameras, (from point-and shoots to high-end rigs) and it isn't going away anytime soon.
So far I really think the manufacturers that I have bought and used a LOT (Canon and Panasonic MFT) are very courteous to us still guys in the way that the cameras are laid out. I do not know how it is for the video shooters!

Is the watch party working for you?

No live cast here, but it was a good idea.
I'm surprised by all the really grumpy comments about MK lll. How many megapixels do you really need, and want to store ?

I'm more interested in many of the specs. Happy to see the depth of field preview moved to the other side.
It's odd to see the spec "Aprox 100 % viewfinder" Really ! Aprox 100%, Canon, you're kidding, right.
Intelligent viewfinder, hmmm, what's that ? I always thought it would be great to have an image preview IN the viewfinder.
Electric level, cool.
Comparative playback??? sounds cool
In camera RAW processing sounds cool
Dual layer metering ? sure hopes it improves speedlight metering
High-density reticular AF. Everybody wants better AF, right ?
re-designed sensor, That's big, because most of us love the MK ll sensor, right ?

I'm not grumpy about the new camera, I ordered two. I will probably be very grumpy about the price of the grip.
