I seem to be very good at subconsciously regrding the button with the red dot on it as a power button, but only on my Lummox point and shoot, where the power button (the correct one) is actually a button rather than a lever like on my Canon ILCs.

With a front protective filter I consider my EF 17-40mm f/4 L a "flare/ghosting monster." It's bad enough in that respect even with no filter.

But then I use it under the lights at night for wide angle shots of sports. I've shot with it in moderate rain with no filter and no ill effects. (I rarely have the pretty much useless hood for it with me, though I never use any of my other zoom lenses without a hood.)

What is it about human nature that seems to come into play so often, and certainly in gear oriented forums? What stands out for me is the tendency to focus on my needs, to pontificate about how important my opinions are. Perhaps, it's ego, given that a forum thread is like a grandstand where I can demonstrate (supposedly) how smart I am and how important I am.

Consider this, what if we were now having to stand before an audience of say 200 people in an auditorium to give our little talk, which would be followed by a question and answer period where the various experts in our field were going to question us.

What's different in this scenario?

Yep, the only way to get it to output at 24p is to turn on a special 24p mode, which states very specifically that it is 24p, not 23.98.

Well, after some looking around, it looks like yes, they only allow you 59.94, or 24p over HDMI. Why does Canon have to be so arbitrarily weird like this??


I guess it's not a huge deal, other than some broadcasts seem to require the specific frame rate of 23.98, not 24, but I will probably never need to worry about that.

Dudes and Girls, we have to be honest with ourselves. Earth is changing it‘s climate and we are part of the problem. But we must be part of the solution aka stopping the problem, too.

If the solution would be to consume more and to waste more plastic and ressources, I guess everbody would be in... but it‘s the opposite. We have to make a change to our lifestyle, each and everyone on his/her own. And that is not easy and it means making compromises and has real effects in our everyday life. Less car, more bike. Less meat, more vegetables. Less „buy new“, more repairing old stuff and using old stuff for a longer period of time... Less power consumption - turn off what you don‘t use right now etc...
Basic stuff but especially when it comes to food people tend to take it personally.

We here in Germany have the hottest January since recording began, 4 degrees Celsius above the longterm mean... just another spike you might say, I am starting to get uneasy when I think about that.

I am a physicist, no mad man. Just take a look around (we can „look around“ worldwide nowadays). Put that bit of media insanity aside and judge for yourself... and ask your local politicians to do the same and to start acting for a more sustainable society tomorrow.

The cost has played a large factor in my adopting the R system, I haven't!

If purchasing a mediocre body and three f2.8 zooms is going to cost me over $10,000 I want to see the differences in output and I just don't. That kind of investment puts the R system out of reach of most working pros, that is, those that buy their gear with the money it earns them.

True enough. I'm assuming one of the Marketing/Web folks at B&H was dinking around with their ads, probably pulled this one up to make some modifications and accidentally turned it on. Clearly, it wasn't ready for prime-time. Just the fact that they're fooling with these ads currently is interesting to me. I had to look up each lens seperately, the Canon site(s) have no way to show all updates. I knew the 24-70 and 24-105 had updates, since I always update lens firmware when I rent them

If you took this shot with a DSLR, then if the focal plane was out, you would see it by either back or front focus of the numbers on the buoys. Have you seen this? According to the depth of field calculator, the dof of a 400mm at f/5.6 on a FF is 110-144m at 125m and 200-340m at 250m. The DSLR AF must be considerably out of kilter not to be in these dof zones.

I'd probably wait since the 80D is already a great camera. If you're on a budget, the price of the R will drop eventually. If you're not on a budget, the R2 will offer more features for a higher price. Currently, there are a lot of reasons to wait.

The preamplifiers on all Canon DSLR and mirrorless cameras are garbage (and the microphones too).
In your situation, you need to adjust the output from the Tascam to have a strong signal, so that you can turn down the volume in the 80D's settings all the way to minimum. This way, you are using the Tascam's microphone and the Tascam's preamplifier to amplify the signal as much as possible (so that you are using the 80D's preamplifier as little as possible.
However, even if you do that... the audio will still be better when recorded on the Tascam.

I have tried something similar with the Zoom H5 connected to the Canon EOS R.
The most noticeable missing component in the signal recorded to the Canon camera (even when sending the strong signal from the external recorder) is bass.
There will be more bass on the external recorder.

For some people the results with the external recorder connected to the camera will be 'good enough'... however, ideally you will record on the external recorder and then synchronize in post.

However, you are in luck with one aspect... concerts are usually loud... the poor preamps are most apparent when you record quiet things... then you get a whole lot of hiss/hum... etc.

DPR did early testing using XQD cards and I didn't see any whimpering about the buffer. I think the buffer is real. What kind of memory is in the buffer is up for grabs. It could be LP RAM. It could be very high quality (I.e. log life) NAND. It even could be 3D Crosspoint memory from Micron. So far, Only Intel has released open market products with 3D xpt memory, but Micron is the manufacturer and they have the right to sell the stuff, so it is not out of the question. However, I do think that if the buffer was persistent, Canon would have made a big deal out of it, so most likely it is RAM for speed and ease of access (for as much concurrency in read and write as possible). In today's world that is only a few RAM chips.
