Three new RF prime lenses coming in early 2020 [CR2]

The RF 24-105mm f4L IS USM may look marginally better than the EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM II on test charts but the reality is this lens is superior in every way to its cousin. More flat field, less vignetting, sharper and better bokeh. Mechanically it is better made and now adds the custom ring.
I would never use the EF version for portraits but the RF version is a great portrait lens.
That's an interesting comment! The RF 24-105 is the only one of the released RF lenses I might actually buy (if I bought an EOS R). The size, weight and cost puts me off most of the others, especially since I'm happy with lenses such as my existing Sigma Arts. And I'm not overly impressed by what I've seen of the RF 35. We'll see about the recently announced RF lenses once they are available. Anyway, if the RF 24-105 makes a decent portrait lens, that would certainly help convince me it's worth getting. Do you have any portraits with the RF 24-105 you can share, by any chance? I've seen a few on Flickr but not sure how much you can tell about the lens from them.

Major AF firmware for R and RP (video)

Thanks. Sitting here cooped up with a head-cold, fretting about the monster hurricane, I have too much time to keep digging into potential problems with R. Sure, I'd rather wait and get the jack-of-all-trades version that may be released next year, but a solid portrait and product body now will suffice--just so I can start using those lenses sooner rather than later. (Plus we've just decided to go with sealed and painted concrete instead of porcelain tile for our studio, so the big savings is a relief!)

If it weren't for the emergence of the R line, I'd happily get another 5D IV to replace my second-shooter 5D III. I really think the improvements in the IV over the III were amazing in all the little ways photographers work---way, way, way underrated at the time of the IV's release.

Amazon has the IV, directly, not from a 3rd party, for under $2400 right now.

EF14mm F2L probability?

Hi guys, I've been waiting for an EF14mm F2L since it was rumored back in April 2018. Since then the R mount has been released. Do you think this means that any release of an awesome Astro lens would only be in an "R" mount? I have a 1DX II but just want a superb extra-wide angle Astro-photography lens.

Do you have any thoughts?

Mike.
That was not a rumor, it was a mention of lenses that people had written to CR about, none of them were actually known to CR Guy, so it did not even rate as a rumor.

I don't expect to ever see one.

Our favourite hands-on preview of the Canon EOS 90D and EOS M6 Mark II

I do like the idea of a burst mode that is already recording images 0.5s before you fully depress the button (Olympus has had this for some time now as has Panasonic). You could focus on a kingfisher on a perch poised to dive, fully press as quickly as your reflexes allow when you see it move and you will have recorded the full action of its diving and maybe resurfacing with a fish, despite the lag of your reflexes.

When Canon puts this in a body that can handle telephoto lenses and do birds in flight as well, I will pre-order!

EOS-R high resolution

What is ground-breaking about a Sony?
Is it ergonomics, color rendition, water leaking?
Yes, some specs are impressive, but they have an advance of a few Milc generations on Nikon and Canon.
I'm certain the next Canon "mirrorlesses" will be very convincing cameras.
Many of us out here in Canonland are hoping your last statement is so very true. Meanwhile, I have no problem with Sony, Fuji, Panasonic and whoever, pushing the boundaries of what they can produce, innovating where possible, giving us choices and hopefully, making us all better photographers.

Canon 5D mark IV. Internal microphone problem?

Hello. Yesterday I went to a concert and did some video records. I've record sound on internal microphone. And everything was fine until one moment. At the half of one song sound went bad.
I've uploaded the part of the video here (bad sound from 23 second) : https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ji81z_jIMTGjJY_HMpvxpLn_barP0ohR
And I think the sound became worse than before, some kind of flat..
Camera settings is defaults.
Any ideas?

Help please: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X for video editing

Thanks for this. I will now research what you're advising and see how prices are here in Canada. It's always better to spend a bit more if there is good justification. I looked at the Ryzen 9 3900X and it was big chunk of change more and most comments I've read say, while it's better it is a steep price to pay for modest gain. I'm not interested in gaming nor bragging rights.:)

Odd storage on 7D2

however we were looking at planes in flight, very predictable path.

As long as they're not performing aerobatics maneuvers (and you don't know very well the program). Anyway, there's also another factor to take into account. With propeller planes you may not want too fast speeds as they can make the propeller look bad. With jet planes, that's not usually an issue.

ON1 announces Photo RAW 2019.2, save 20% with our coupon code

as an update, it looks like CR3 is now avail.

posting here here because I keep getting frustrated as $#$%$# with ON1's colour management and maybe others trying it out have the same issues. It's a tool with a lot of potential, but this and its noise reduction have been keeping me from fully ditching LR

None of ON1's colour profiles seem to be close the canon 80d's landscape colour profiles (unlike LR6). Their interpretation of the Canon 80D landscape profile is horrible and the blues blow out badly and it gives weird artifacts when the background is busy (trees).

I finally did an export of some LR settings to build my own LR equivalent preset. With a bit of tweaking finally have a proper landscape preset that looks decent! lot of work, but now stoked.

Turns out ON1 tends to pre-process the 80D's RAW with excessive contrast, weird mid-tone levels etc. If you use the camera landscape setting the blues over saturate and when you try to lighten the pictures can introduce white halos. After importing and looking at their AI export tool's equivalent to LR I now have a much clearer understanding of how to adjust.. anyways, like any tool, it's about learning it's nuances, this was just a particularly irritating one for me.

Wireless RAW transfer, while writing to the internal SD card - not perfect - but, close.

So Canon finally listened to my moaning. I've called twice to mention that this feature is 'broken' in the image transfer utility.

But, with 'Image Transfer Utility 2', you can now wirelessly backup your RAW files, while writing to the internal card.

There is only one caveat. Canon seems to insist on saving batteries, so the image transfer is only initiated after you turn your camera on, or after it comes back from being asleep. Not a big problem, but when I have time, I'll probably call and make a 'feature request' to allow continuous backup.

I've tested this thoroughly on my Mac and it's pretty fantastic. Here's how it works; First, you link your camera to the computer and tell it to take your RAW files as backups and to always look for new files on your SD. Then you shoot. After you turn your camera off and back on, or after it goes asleep and you wake it up, your camera and Mac will start to sync any new RAW files to the folder you specified on your computer. You can shoot away during this process. I haven't noticed any slowdown at all in frame rate, or buffer clearing. Any files you capture while the sync is in process will be transferred to your computer. After the sync stops, any new RAW files will not transfer until you turn on/off, or sleep/wake your camera. But, other than worrying that I'm going to wear out my on/off dial, this has not been a problem.

For wedding shooters, having a computer may not be convenient, so I suggest you call Canon and impress upon them the importance of allowing this to work on your IOS/Android. But, for studio shooters like me, this is pretty fantastic.

You can also setup Lightroom and Capture One to read the backup folder as a hot folder and use this for wireless 'tethering'.

RAW transfer is not as fast as I'd like. With the wifi utility, it takes about 4 seconds a RAW file. With this utility, it takes about double, maybe a bit longer, but it's been completely stable for me, even over multiple days, without ever needing to reconnect.

It's a major step in the right direction and gives me huge hope. If they could do this to an iPad Pro, or a other smaller device, it would be perfect.

I image some others will like this as much as I do. For those of you who would benefit from improved functionality, please call canon and ask to make a feature request. I do it through my CPS phone contacts, but I would imagine any Canon customer service representative could do this for you as well.

Canon may be getting a lot of flack, but, behind the scenes, they're really stepping up their game. If they get this working on small devices, without major battery draw, and without needed an on/off, or sleep/wake cycle, The argument for the 2nd card slot - on most cameras - is gone...

An APS-C sensor equipped EOS R camera mentioned again [CR1]

You are getting confused between field of view and image size.
You put a 400mm lens on micro fourthirds, on APS-C and on FF and take a picture of a bird. The image projected on the sensor will be the same size on every sensor - high school physics will tell you this. The only difference between each format is how much stuff round the bird you will see in the viewfinder.
'Reach' comes from the number of pixels that cover the bird.
Exactly!

Take a 7D2 (crop) camera and a 5DS (FF) camera and put a 400mm lens on each. Go take a picture of a Chickadee that is 50 feet away. If the bird is 3000 pixels wide on the crop camera, it will be 3000 pixels wide on the FF camera because both cameras sample the image at the same density. The 5DS just samples more from the sides of the image.

Take a 90D and a 1DX2 and try the same. The framing will be the same as the above cameras, but the number of pixels on target will be different. With it's lower sampling density, the 1DX2 will have an 1875 pixel wide bird, while the higher sampling density 90D will have a 3815 pixel wide bird.

In general, crop gives you more pixels on target, but FF gives you better quality pixels on target. Your lighting conditions and lens quality will dictate which is better.

EOS R with RF to EF filter- adapter

Hi fellow EOS R users!
Before I order the quite expensive RF to EF filter-adapter, I'd need to know whether it does actually protect the sensor from dust.
I'm only episodically interested in the use of filters, rather looking for a way to "seal" the body during lens changes in dusty environments (EF lenses, of course).
I would most of the time use this adapter with the neutral filter.
Thanks for your answers!

From my use of it the past months: there's a lot less dust on my sensor, but still a few new spots have appeared. It's hard to do an objective comparison, but I would say it's 90% less dust, if not better. This is on an RP, so I don't get that fancy shutter closing the R has.

Apart from the dust, having a polarizer that won't reflect like crazy with macro flashes is so nice that I'm hesitant to replace EF lenses with the RF counterpart when they appear.
