I don't use video either but I expect a certain standard especially something that was on a 10 years old camera 5DII. It's about getting the most bang for your buck. Who knows, I may use video options on my expensive camera if it produces better video than my GoPro7 or SmartPhone.

I also don't play games on smart phone, but I expect any recent SOC have decent gaming performance when I do decide to play when I have major down time.

There are alot of things I don't use, but others do, and it sort of become an industry standard since all the competitions has it.

I do make camera-buying decision I do need but Canon think $2300 camera shouldn't have it - dual card slot, IBIS, better eyeAF, newer sensor.
All the competitions have IBIS and better 4K options but Canon still do not offer it because users like you than enable them "I don't use it".

I don't care about the video. I care about Canon continue to gimp features just because.

I had the Sigma 50 ART for a week or so before I sold it. It is sharp, and the bokeh is good enough, just looking at the bokeh. The main problem for me was the lack of depth rendering. It made subjects and images look flat. The EF50L is four leagues ahead in that department.

Yeah, I'm not all about the "recommended" procedures for transporting these printers when it means plowing through two or three $90 maintenance cartridges. And based on Keith's estimates of how much ink a PRO-2000 empties out to move it (one and a half liters), you're looking at losing about nine hundred dollars worth of ink just to move the printer.

I'm not saying that the need for emptying out the ink to move them is completely unnecessary. I'm sure Canon has their reasons, but I don't think avoiding the risk of moving it with ink still in it is worth over a thousand dollars of ink and maintenance cartilages that you have to blow through in order to get the printer ready to move, especially when I see this post about someone who foolishly tilted his PRO-1000 on end with ink in it, and seemingly was ok afterwards.


When I bought the printer, I tried to execute the command to prepare to move the printer "to a different place on the same floor" which to my understanding uses the least ink and locks the print head in place, but the cartridge said it was full shortly after I did that. And without a spare cartridge and with a rented moving van waiting outside to get the printer into it, there was really no choice but to move it.

The printer didn't seem to protest too much once I got it set up in its new home, but it's not going to do anything until I get a new maintenance cartridge in there. I broke down and bought a new one because right now I just want to get it running and make sure it's ok. It should arrive in a couple days. I'll update with how it is. But again there wasn't any sort of error noticeable when I turned it on, aside from the cartridge being full.

I can’t remember where I read this, but it was of an interview with someone from Olympus, where they said that their face detect tried to focus on the eyes and then it tried to ID the face....

It does not mean that Canon’s face detect focuses on the eyes, but it does mean that some face detects do.

Strictly speaking, they said “The world’s widest rectilinear prime lens for full frame cameras with a claim of being distortion free”. Add enough qualifiers and then you can claim to be first

Anyone hoping to attain my level is in for a rude surprise! My gear far exceeds my capability and perhaps that explains why I love it.

I bought the Canon PL-C52 (WII) several years ago and never used it until last year. For several years, I have been photographing this same pair of bald eagles along the Grand River. As you are probably quite aware, being a nature photographer you have to cooperate with mother nature. She provides the light often changing from one minute to the next. I use the polariser in situations where it is difficult to control the highlights, to reduce reflections in the water and to increase the blue colour tone in the sky. I use it with my Canon 200-400mm 1.4x and the 300mm 2.8.

Wanting to be more creative with my photography, I looked into buying ND filters but didn't want to pay the price...until the EOS R came out.

Hope the ND adapter arrives soon for you.

Thanks for this. I really must dust that filter off and take it with me for the next shots where water is involved. It's easy to buy things and then kind of forget that you "really needed them". Reminds me of my sky tracker that wasn'tt very handy without a flip screen when I was using the 6D. An R changes that. No ND as of today but warmer temperatures ... maybe and not much snow.

You are right, but before, the 1 inch sensors of high-end compacts, followed later by micro four thirds will be at risk. But generally, the classic camera makers will more and more be under pressure by the freaking fast progress in the image processing technology used in smartphones.

This is so much more fun than the Invariant ISO thread, yuck.

The 5D4 and the R is the combo I currently have. I haven't had that much issue with the EVF outside (don't wear glasses). The 5D4 is better for moving subjects.

But, does speed still drop by a huge factor after a high level formatting of a SD card because a block erase must first be done to clear the contents of a memory block before writing to it?

I seem to recall that it has to do with the difference in how housekeeping of data on the card is done by the controllers on SD versus CF cards. Perhaps, someone has a technical information. SD cards do have a command which low level formats the entire card very quickly, but does not physically write 1's or 0's to each memory cell, it just makes them appear that way and recovery software will not work, but experts may still use a custom controller to read out the values in the cells, making sense of them is much more difficult.

I would imagine, at this early stage (in 3rd party manufacturing/reverse engineering) that it would have to be manual focus. I would imagine that all of the lenses this distributor resells are manual focus. (But I do not know with certainty.)

I'm really glad that Tamron has introduced two new lenses for FullFrame DSLRs. But they could introduce some fixed maximum apeture lenses for APS-C cameras as well. Something like a 10-20mm f/2.8 Di II VC USD (instead of 16-35mm), a 20-50mm f/2.8 Di II VC USD (instead of 24-70mm) and a 50-120mm f/2.8 Di II VC USD (instead of the 70-200mm) lineup for those who don't want or can't allow to use FullFrame lenses and cameras.

Tokina "pro" lenses have always been excellent value for money. Very satisfied with my 11-16 f/2.8 (which BTW mounts just fine on FF & is perfectly acceptable as a "real" 16mm f/2.8).
