Is the 50 1.2 still relevant in 2019?

I've never owned the EF 50/1.2L so I cannot comment on what it's like to use, but I like the photos it can take, even if it isn't the sharpest lens. What I don't get though, is the comments I see above criticising the Sigma 50 Art, eg the comment that the Sigma 50 Art is more like a Canon EF 50/1.4 with better build quality. The 50 Art renders a little differently from the EF 50/1.2L, and at it's best I would give the edge in bokeh to the Canon, but that edge comes at the expense of sharpness and I think the 50 Art bokeh is still right up there (for a 50mm).

I particularly don't understand comments criticising the 50 Art's bokeh but praising lenses like the RF 50/1.2L and the EF 85/1.4L IS. The 50 Art is quite similar to those recent Canon lenses, in my opinion. They are sharp but that sharpness is accompanied by a slightly different bokeh than less sharp lenses such as the EF 50/1.2L.
I had the Sigma 50 ART for a week or so before I sold it. It is sharp, and the bokeh is good enough, just looking at the bokeh. The main problem for me was the lack of depth rendering. It made subjects and images look flat. The EF50L is four leagues ahead in that department.

Canon announces the VIXIA HF G50 4K UHD Video Camcorder

I totally expect this thing to turn around the fate of budget camcorders... NOT! What a waste of time and money, Canon.
I just registered on this site to say to you I haven't bought a camcorder since 2002 but I am buying 2 of these the day they come out. The 4K resolution and low light capabilities are something I want to check out first hand. I've been a bit of a hermit in Manhattan and if I was running around town shooting live music for fun with on a $2K investment, that would be well worth it. I'm glad to be doing my part to keep budget camcorders alive, these things feel awesome in your palm and the screen moving around in directions while you change angles and try to stay out of peoples way is something a DSLR cannot do.

But yes, I will yearn for slave timecode capabilities of the higher end camcorders but for the price point you can't beat it. I don't want to lug around a bunch of lenses with a DSLR unless the creative choices of the piece call for that type of depth of field control. I am very excited for this Canon VIXIA HF G50 camera release.

Canon maintenance cartridge chip resetters on ebay

Yeah, I'm not all about the "recommended" procedures for transporting these printers when it means plowing through two or three $90 maintenance cartridges. And based on Keith's estimates of how much ink a PRO-2000 empties out to move it (one and a half liters), you're looking at losing about nine hundred dollars worth of ink just to move the printer. :cautious:

I'm not saying that the need for emptying out the ink to move them is completely unnecessary. I'm sure Canon has their reasons, but I don't think avoiding the risk of moving it with ink still in it is worth over a thousand dollars of ink and maintenance cartilages that you have to blow through in order to get the printer ready to move, especially when I see this post about someone who foolishly tilted his PRO-1000 on end with ink in it, and seemingly was ok afterwards.

When I bought the printer, I tried to execute the command to prepare to move the printer "to a different place on the same floor" which to my understanding uses the least ink and locks the print head in place, but the cartridge said it was full shortly after I did that. And without a spare cartridge and with a rented moving van waiting outside to get the printer into it, there was really no choice but to move it.

The printer didn't seem to protest too much once I got it set up in its new home, but it's not going to do anything until I get a new maintenance cartridge in there. I broke down and bought a new one because right now I just want to get it running and make sure it's ok. It should arrive in a couple days. I'll update with how it is. But again there wasn't any sort of error noticeable when I turned it on, aside from the cartridge being full.

Canon releases firmware v1.1.0 for the EOS R and it’s disappointing

Would it be face detect that tries firstly to nail the eyes?

Jack
I can’t remember where I read this, but it was of an interview with someone from Olympus, where they said that their face detect tried to focus on the eyes and then it tried to ID the face....

It does not mean that Canon’s face detect focuses on the eyes, but it does mean that some face detects do.

Samyang officially announces the XP 10mm f/3.5, the world’s widest prime lens

Calling it "the widest" is a little misleading, as Voighlander makes a 10mm f/5.6 full frame lens for the Sony E mount.

Sounds like an interesting lens, I'll be waiting for the reviews.
Strictly speaking, they said “The world’s widest rectilinear prime lens for full frame cameras with a claim of being distortion free”. Add enough qualifiers and then you can claim to be first :)

When can we expect the ND Filter Adapter for EF 11-24 use, etc. ?

Jack -20°C here this morning, so I guess I can't complain, except we are going to get slammed with a massive snow storm tonight!

I bought the Canon PL-C52 (WII) several years ago and never used it until last year. For several years, I have been photographing this same pair of bald eagles along the Grand River. As you are probably quite aware, being a nature photographer you have to cooperate with mother nature. She provides the light often changing from one minute to the next. I use the polariser in situations where it is difficult to control the highlights, to reduce reflections in the water and to increase the blue colour tone in the sky. I use it with my Canon 200-400mm 1.4x and the 300mm 2.8.

Wanting to be more creative with my photography, I looked into buying ND filters but didn't want to pay the price...until the EOS R came out.

Hope the ND adapter arrives soon for you.

Sue

Thanks for this. I really must dust that filter off and take it with me for the next shots where water is involved. It's easy to buy things and then kind of forget that you "really needed them". Reminds me of my sky tracker that wasn'tt very handy without a flip screen when I was using the 6D. An R changes that. No ND as of today but warmer temperatures ... maybe and not much snow.

Canon to announce an RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS (Defocus Smoothing)

with the increasing processing power of smartphones, the next market at risk would be cropped sensor(s)....
You are right, but before, the 1 inch sensors of high-end compacts, followed later by micro four thirds will be at risk. But generally, the classic camera makers will more and more be under pressure by the freaking fast progress in the image processing technology used in smartphones.

Two more RF mount lenses could be coming in 2019 [CR2]

Ultimately, Canon cares about how many yen their products generate. Period. It matters not to them if those yen come from Japanese customers or from U.S. Dollars that came from their U.S. customers that are converted to yen, or from Euros from their EUropean customers that are converted to yen.
I think Canon has found its market for M products and now its seeking the positioning of the R product.

When to switch from EF to RF ?

Love my 5Div but it is sometimes too big and heavy for grab and go travel stuff. ............... So, I am sitting looking at my entire M5 and lens entourage right now, really thinking of selling it all and jumping into an RP to replace my M5 for those reasons. A little bigger? Yes. A little heavier? Yes. Less than wonderful battery life? Yes. But a FF secondary kit seems to make sense to me just now.

I am going to jump to the RP. Just put my M stuff up for sale.

MicroSD adopts NVMe standard.

But, does speed still drop by a huge factor after a high level formatting of a SD card because a block erase must first be done to clear the contents of a memory block before writing to it?

I seem to recall that it has to do with the difference in how housekeeping of data on the card is done by the controllers on SD versus CF cards. Perhaps, someone has a technical information. SD cards do have a command which low level formats the entire card very quickly, but does not physically write 1's or 0's to each memory cell, it just makes them appear that way and recovery software will not work, but experts may still use a custom controller to read out the values in the cells, making sense of them is much more difficult.

The SPEEDMASTER 50mm f/0.95 III coming for the RF mount

I assume an MF lens for the RF mount.
I would imagine, at this early stage (in 3rd party manufacturing/reverse engineering) that it would have to be manual focus. I would imagine that all of the lenses this distributor resells are manual focus. (But I do not know with certainty.)

Tamron announces the 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD and SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD for Canon EF

I'm really glad that Tamron has introduced two new lenses for FullFrame DSLRs. But they could introduce some fixed maximum apeture lenses for APS-C cameras as well. Something like a 10-20mm f/2.8 Di II VC USD (instead of 16-35mm), a 20-50mm f/2.8 Di II VC USD (instead of 24-70mm) and a 50-120mm f/2.8 Di II VC USD (instead of the 70-200mm) lineup for those who don't want or can't allow to use FullFrame lenses and cameras. :)

Tamron adds EOS R support for the 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD

I tried it as well and was complete mush. Soft and poor AF, even with the included Tap In. Returned it to B&H within the return period. Dustin gave it glowing remarks but as with everything, YMMV. Still looking for the 100-400 that isn't with the Canon price tag that fits my budget and style. (It doesn't exist)

Preorder: Canon EOS RP camera and kits

oh yeah I do a fair bit of what you describe and it's a pleasure that someone else gets it, but I what I was rebutting the answer about not knowing or caring about controlling your environment. Meh I think point has been hammered to death.

this is the kinds of shots I try to take, FF really might help.. Trying to freeze motion in low light is... challenging. now to see if I can convince wife n kids to allow me to plonk $3-4k on my non-paying hobby.

Timing is everything. If you can catch them at the apex of the jump, there's that split second between when they are going up and coming back down...

Ditto for convincing the SO/kids: timing is everything!
