What are Sony's tactics?

Medium Format mirrorless sales must be orders of magnitude lower than FF. It's a huge jump in price for a marginal jump in performance, IMHO. (Would love to see data on this, actually. How is the Fuji mirrorless / H'Bad mirrorless doing commercially?)

I'm not saying Sony's not crazy enough to try a medium format product, but the body would be north of $5k and the lenses would be massive and expensive.

You are right, but I would love to see a Canon MF camera. The Pentax looks like a good offering, but for me it isn't a need. MF is just a want. I need

a Hyundai. I want a Bentley. Besides, for the price of the camera and two lenses I could buy the Hyundai. ;)

A Bit More About the New “Big White” Lenses Coming from Canon [CR3]

Yes, and you obviously miss read my original comment. Which was:

I am not buying this rumor, at least the version III part.
Those lenses just haven't been out long enough.

The EF 300mm f/2.8 L IS II and the EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS II were both announced in 2010 and released in early 2011. If their replacements are announced in Q3 of 2018 and ship in early 2019, that will be eight years.

That's not too far off the 8.5 years the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II had before being replaced by the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS III.

This would be especially reasonable in the case that the primary reason for the "short" updates is to make the newer versions compatible with features/performance enhancements of an impending camera body that require them for full capability.

Lensrentals.com: MTF Tests for the Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS II Lens

Roger over at Lensrentals.com has completed some MTF testing of the new Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II. A lens Canon has said will outperform it’s predecessor in every single way. Did they succeed?
Buy the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II at Adorama
At 70mm, it’s clear that the new EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II outperforms the previous version. As you can see from the MTF below, from the center of the frame to about 2/3 of the way out, the difference will be very noticeable.

At 135mm, the previous version was better than it was at 70mm, but the new version is still showing how much better it is...

Any rumor about a new TS-E lens wider than 17mm?

That's why LF cameras are still around. But it becomes a pain with recessed lens boards and bag bellows, no yaw free movements anymore, light fall-off, etc. There is a Schneider 47 mm ~ 15 mm in FF SLR terms.
Yes, I have the 47xl and unless you're being purposefully artsy with the severe falloff, you also have to use an expensive center filter.

There is also a 38xl but it won't quite cover 4x5. However, for the amount it would cover, it might be slightly wider angle of view %.

I love those lenses and have the 47xl, 58xl 72xl then also Nikor SW90, Rodenstock 120S, 180s, 210, 240.

Is it rude to just respond "LOL" to the original thread post ? ;) Basically, any wider and you're probably trying to use the wrong approach to make the image.

Kickstarter: The Travel Line: Versatile Travel Backpack + Packing Tools from Peak Design

This makes me feel better that I got the WANDRD backpack for my work bag instead of the Peak backpack.

But there was a very long and twisted path to get there. Read on for fun:

Industry News: More DJI Mavic 2 Pro Images Leak Ahead of Announcement

We were to have already seen an official announcement for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro drop, as it was originally scheduled to be announced on July 18, 2018. For whatever reason (rumored to be production issues), DJI delayed the announcement. It’s now rumoured that the announcement will come in September ahead of Photokina.
There are going to be two versions of the drone, one being the DJI Mavic 2 Pro and the other being teh DJI Mavic 2 Zoom. The zoom drone will have a 2x optical zoom of 24mm-48mm, which will used a built-in dolly zoom effect.
We knew earlier in July that there would be two version of the Mavic 2, thanks to these leaked photos.  But thanks to Argos we have even more details about what to expect from the new DJI drones.
Key Specifications:

1080p video transmission
8km (4.9 miles) transmission range
Max spped 20 m/s (44 mph)
31 minute battery life
APAS
ActiveTrack 2.0
Omnidirectional obstacle avoidance.

The other big update for the Mavic Pro line will be the use of a...

Are the latest "updates" intended to keep EF on life support?

It is far more likely that Canon is updating much of their current lens line to be (thus far, silently) compatible with some as yet unrevealed new feature or capability included in future camera bodies. These lens updates likely include compatibility with features or capabilities of planned camera bodies that the lenses recently replaced do not have the ability to fully exploit.

I think the likelihood that Canon plans to stay with the EF mount for a long time is increased with every "marginal" upgrade of an EF lens, particularly with upper tier lenses such as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS III and the two expected new IS III versions of the Super Telephoto series. What we don't know, at present, about these minimal improvements is how much other stuff has been silently upgraded in these lenses in preparation for the new camera models on the horizon.

That is a very good point. They are designing the lenses to a roadmap, not just to immediate requirements. As I understand it, the series 2 telephotos were much better when paired mkiii extenders because of the way the lens read the LUTs in the extender and how the future bodies interacted with both and you do not do that without an integrated design program.

Glasses on or off?

Hi Ken.
Thank you for your kindness, your pointers on photographing people are good, I will try to remember them, never really thought about name tags though so far the only time I think I have encountered that situation was on a reunion / memorial trip with my dad and some of his comrades back to the Normandy beaches and to some of the villages they liberated, the name tags were useful as I now still have some names for them as dad is no longer with us to fill in the blanks.

Cheers, Graham.

Graham,

Congratulations on surviving your first wedding! Kudos on getting some key moments, and getting them in focus. The first wedding I shot (years ago, similar situation, for free, but in my case not as primary photog fortunately) I had just switched to back-button focus... and hilarity ensued. I forgot to refocus on about 25% of the shots. It was a similar situation... relatives that couldn't afford a pro photographer so they enlisted two family members.

On photographing people, I go with just "reminding" the subject that they have their glasses on. "Hey... you have your glasses on. Not sure if that's what you want or not. It doesn't matter to me either way." About 80% of the time they take them off.

I've gotten much more confident shooting people, but only by continuing to shoot people. When someone is wanting to be photographed with someone they haven't seen in a long time (like at a reunion), I now try to be mindful of the fact there's no mirror for them to check themselves. For example, at events where people have name tags on, I always ask if they want to remove the name tags for the photo, and they almost always take them off. So basically, by shooting people more and more, you become more confident. You aren't thinking of the mechanics of the camera much at all. You're focusing more on the people and thinking "is this how I'd want to look in a photo?" Then just ask them, or point things out. - "You have some cake icing on your tie... let's get that off." "Do you want to keep your sunglasses on for this shot?" "Let's move over here where the light is a little better."

But all in all, you should feel good about giving your time, and the resulting photos are WAY better than cellphone photos would have been. That is a nice wedding gift!

Would you buy more EF lenses if new FF mirrorless uses a new lens mount?

One only needs to look at the FF lenses Sony has in its E mount range. The 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 or the 85mm f1.4 or the 70-200mm f2.8 are barely different in size or weight to the Canon offerings in the EF mount. The cameras are clearly smaller but the weight ratio makes holding a 70-200mm f2.8 lens on a Sony A7 series camera very front heavy and after shoot for a couple of hours you realise how uncomfortable that this. We rent them so I get to play with many combinations on Sony, Nikon and Canon and whilst you could say I'm old school and biased towards Canon DSLRS & lenses they strike the right balance presently.
Ive owned 4/3rds and micro 4/3rd Olympus cameras since they came out but they are "toys" in comparison, yet they are lighter, yes they have steadily improved but the end result is nowhere near as good as what I get from a Canon DSLR (5DS) & L optics its like night & day.

Maybe when Canon FF mirrorless arrives it will turn the world on its head, but somehow I think this is Canon response to Sony since Sony added the G master lenses which are optically very good.
