Sony announces #1 in FF cameras in US

I don't think it's as a big a deal as it is being made out to be. There is always going to be a boom in camera sales following new releases. Sony released 2 full frame cameras since November 2017, while Canon and Nikon released none. Push back further to May, and Sony has released 3 full frame cameras while Canon and Nikon released 1 each. Of course Sony will sell a lot of full frame cameras right after releases when the competing brands have not released anything in the same timeframe.

Looking at Nikon specifically, they announced being number 1 in full frame camera sales following release of the D850 last December and they even based that statement on the same data sources referenced by Sony now. Nikon's lead obviously didn't last long, because the growth in sales was directly linked to a boom in sales for a new model.

Claiming to be first for a short snapshot in time really only tells part of the story. Now, if Sony remained first in market share for full frame cameras over a full release cycle of Canon and Nikon bodies (as in each company gets to re-release their full series of full frame cameras), then that would be some serious bragging rights. Until then though, I would expect each company to cherry pick data that aims to catch headlines.

What Bloomberg thinks of Sony, mirrorfree and CaNikon

The companies are so different that comparing stock movement would be pretty irrelevant to the question as to how individual products or lines are seen. Sony's mirrorless camera line relative to the corporation might be like the Apple Watch, or maybe better Apple TV, in the weight given to overall performance of the stock.

Overseas certification list updated: LP-E6 battery cameras with same radio parts as 'KissM'

DS 126721 (from a prior certification post, pan about 2/3 of the way down) was listed as "Mirrorless or SLR" and the larger battery put this in to 'FF Mirrorless possible' territory.

K424 / K433 / EC 811 = Three new mirrorless cameras, but sensor size is unknown. Could be crop.

PC 2357 = may be a new ID for us to track.

(Someone here has surely been tracking these -- can any cross-reference the latest tell in the original post above vs. the prior long certification list we saw here in july?)

Hidden gems of Japan: Tokyo and beyond with the Canon EOS M50

I guess I’m a little different than everyone else posting here. I was looking at this and thinking ‘wow, what a great little documentary with excellent images’. Especially on the shots at high iso.

When your target is web, you don’t really need much else. And it’s the skill of these two that brought life to the images. I doubt there would have been much, if any, difference to the final product if they had used a full frame mirrorless. And then they’d have sacrificed the portability of the eos m.

You can produce seriously good stuff on that line of cameras.

Alternative Generic Charger

Battery chargers that do not talk with Canon batteries are likely to ruin them, and you won't even know it. Canon batteries are "Smart" and tell the charger when they are charged, or when they are overheated. If a 3rd party charger fries those electronics, you lose the protection.

I've also seen RAV LP-E6 users claim their genuine Canon batteries were destroyed by it.

You might be better off getting a power bank with AC output, there are lots of them. Then use your Canon charger. Saving just one ruined Canon battery will pay for the power bank.

Tamron Announces the Smallest, Lightest Ultra-Wide-Angle Zoom Lens in its Class

Really???

Much prefer something that affords me the opportunity at 2.8 @ 17mm even if by 35 it’s 4.0, as long as the image quality is there and not compromised. At least I get a choice this way :)

I never understand when people say things like this. Give me less!!!

I can understand why people would prefer a non-variable aperture, but for me I'd be happy with variable aperture on this lens - I think it could have a pretty interesting niche use. I am pretty keen on finding a lens which is:
  • Ideally 16mm wide (but I could maybe manage with 17)
  • small and light (so I can carry it long distances with my camping gear and other camera gear)
  • fast at the wide end at least (so I can do some wide astrophotography without having another wide/fast lens to carry)
  • has a normal filter thread (so I can mount a 100mm filter system)
The only other lens that ticks those boxes is the Canon 16-35 f/2.8L iii (and its predecessors), and it is likely to be quite a bit more expensive, heavier and larger. I'm very curious to see performance on this versus the 16-35 2.8L iii - no doubt it won't out-perform, but I really just want to see if it will be "good enough". My hope would be to take my Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 and Canon 16-35 f/4L out of my bag for this lens which would reduce my packed weight, but let me come close to the same flexibility.

Think Tank Photo and MindShift Gear Announce Merger

Bummer... I used to use a couple Tamrac bags, but then switched over to GuraGear, but I prefered the GG designs over the Tamac/GG combined offerings. Now I have replaced the Tamrac bags with ThinkTank. Love the Streetwalker Pro v2. It's my most used bag. The GG bags carry more but are not used for walking about. I'd rather use the streetwalker and swap lenses that I need from the GGs.

Tony Northrup: I Made a Mistake: The Canon EOS 6D Mark II is the BEST Vlogging Camera. Seriously.

:D OK Touche

There are those of us who believe that a digital camera is better with an AA filter. Personally I'm pleased that Canon produced the 5Dsr for the likes of you and the s for me. I hope that in the series 2 they still offer this option, unlike Nikon. Who knows ? They may. Canon are quite good at offering what is fundamentally correct.

The usefulness of the AA-filter decreases with increasing resolution as basically it filters out the high frequency noise, which gets less important with increasing pixel density. It is telling that Sony use an AA-filter for their 20 Mpx A9 but not for their high mpx bodies.

Comparison: Tamron 70-210mm f/4 Di VC,Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS II & Nikkor 70-200mm f/4 VR

These reviews always ignore resale value. Pay less today and get less tomorrow.
I would say that is a good thing. Resale Value isn't a propertie of a lens in question. It is determined by the marked at the time it get's resold, which should be the future. I prefer reviews that Review the lens properties and don't speculate about the future.

Review: Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS II by Dustin Abbott

That may well be your opinion, but that hasn't been my experience over doing well over 100 reviews. Using this technique has revealed truths that test charts have not.

There is major lopsided distortion in the lens, you held it at an odd angle or the wall was laid by drunk masons. I agree with AlanF on this one, the chart would be more telling and we would know the chart wasn't made by an inebriated brick tender.

EOS EF-M version of the EF 11-24?

In two different occasions, I've come close to picking up a Canon EF 11-24 lens...but have resisted, in part due to mount-related questions surrounding Canon's soon-to-be-released large-sensor mirrorless camera.

Fascinating people treat those questions conspiracy theories seriously.

There are reasons to suspect Canon will change the flange distance and throat diameter, which could be resolved with an extension tube as done for EOS-M, but there's no reason to think Canon would break backward compatability in any other way.

White Counting at World Cup Final

Some non-whites were still canon (2nd or 3rd bodies) by strap or by red L-ring, most big blacks are obviously Nikon. It is seen either by rounded eyepiece (if it is visible), or by a wheel near the shutter button (and they have some red stripe there).
I don't have any meaningful clues how to detect Sonies from that distance.
Some very unusual lens is seen (white, but very strange shape).

The shooter with the lens hood on backwards appears to be lost.
