If you don't mind me asking are you using ACR to process RAW files? I played with a cityscape that I took with my 5Ds tonight. I looked at Photoshop using ACR and Adobe's lens profile for the 16-35/4L IS lens, Canon's DPP 4.2.32 and their Lens Optimizer, and Phase One's Capture One 8.3. DPP was the sharpest but looked artificial in some respects. Photoshop was the weakest in terms of correcting lens softness in the corners. Capture One was impressive right from the start. The defaults they applied were closest to what I would want. They also had a Canon 16-35/4L IS lens profile and auto selected it. Sharpness was somewhere between Photoshop and DPP and the overall look of the image was very good with minimal tweaking. I have a large number of 3rd party tools to work with in Photoshop so I can adjust just about anything but Capture One saved a good bit of time getting me close to where I wanted to be just by opening the file. It also transfers the image to Photoshop a lot faster than DPP.

Hello Joe,

In this series I was just using the latest Lightroom CC since it is most common for all. I generally use LR for a quick preview. But most all my production images begin with Capture One. I also used to play with DxO, but Capture One just became a fave for import. Interesting news on 5DS and Capture One. I guess I need to play with it now.

Capture One definitely has a different take on the 5DS raw. With these new high MP files, it looks like there is diversity in the importers.

Too little, too late. Maybe I would have been interested if the Panny was available in North America in 2014, with MUCH less price tag. Now ancient Android 4.4, Snapdragon 801, only 16 GB, small 4.7" 1920 x 1080 screen for that price?!

I just picked up the LG G4 with its 16 MP f/1.8 lens, full manual control, and the beautiful QuadHD 5.5" screen. Takes great photo's with RAW/DNG support, and LG is giving away free extra battery and SD card with G4 purchase currently 8)

I just sent mine to Tamron for service in April for the first firmware update. The lens was returned saying they adjusted the autofocusing system and disassembled and cleaned the lens. There was no mention of doing a firmware update.

Now I'm wondering if I should send in my lens again. Tamron's page says

the system automatically selects the optimal VC mode by detecting the motion of the camera/lens outfit. Thus, no switch-over is required between "ON" and "OFF" after the update.

Does that mean the lens now has an auto-sensing panning VC mode, or that you just don't have to turn off VC anymore when panning? It sounds like the lens now has VC for panning, but I am feeling skeptical because that would be such a big upgrade. Especially for the photography of birds and aircraft that I do.

I bought it from Wex Photographics online (they have a showroom in Norwich), but as I mentioned I had a 10% discount code to use that they sent me as a customer and newsletter subscriber. So it made their price go from £399 to £359.

Otherwise as you say the Amazon UK price is probably going to be the lowest but I agree it's probably best in your case to check one out in a store. I like Park Cameras as a company too and they have a store in London.

Its just the age old problems of af... a trained camera man knows instinctively what way to rack a lens, and can do so creeping, fast but still with smooth ramping, even without set marks or lens marks... nice smooth tracking.

With a dslr, even a cropped sensor dslr you are dealing with a massive sensor area, even compared to the 2/3" HDCAMs that were leading the digital charge 10 years ago...

And 10 years ago if you were fairly well off you might have had a 32" crt in your living room... Now 40 or 50 even seems modest so any imperfections are enlarged also...



Bupt a human instinctively follows the subject no matter where they are in the frame, no matter what the background or foreground is.

If you shoot an 8fps with a fancy dslr you are not going to get every frame sharp every time with af. So you don't show folk the ones where you had selected the wrong af point... and everybody things you are uber talented to capture the moment.

Video is a faster fps, and you have to show everybody every frame between your in and out points, you don't have to be in focus once, but always, or at least follow a focus logic.

I've not found a video af system that is there yet.

Its a big ask with huge sensors and huge viewing environments.

What is 'good enough' will vary by the demands of and upon the shooter. If I wasn't confident using mf just yet I'd go for a small chip camcorder.

My old digibeta was miles and miles above the hi8 I used for holidays, but it wasn't always the best tool for the job (when other folk sere using it... )

I suspect the 6DII will have better AF. If a 400-series flash with RT comes out, it'll most likely be a slave only. I highly doubt we'll ever see a vertical button on a body.

Worth pointing out that this isn't the place for requests you want Canon to see.

The 20D is still a good camera, I loved mine when I had it.
A friend of mine is still producing competition winning images with her 20D and 40D cameras. So long as the light is good and the subject is not too challenging for the AF then all the rest is excuses!
Is her 20D as good as my 1DX = NO! But she often gets better images, simply she is a better photographer so the camera is not a handicap.

Vello makes a ton of replica lens hoods, but they do not appear to have made one for the 16-35 F/4L IS just yet.

I recently purchased the Canon 85mm 1.8 but had to return it as it was full of dust inside the lens. Although I'd love an 85mm right now, I've decided it's not essential and I am now keen to see what new offerings we get in the future rather than just re-purchase the 85mm 1.8. Sadly, I'm not holding my breath for an 85mm IS announcement from Canon any time soon.

Here are some 100% crops from my LR + PS version showing great detail, sharpness and dark tonality.

Be sure to mask the area around the lcd you don't need to polish the painted area or get grit in the buttons. Frog tape is the best for masking.

Although I do not like screen protectors, I went ahead and bought glass ones for my 5D MK III top and rear LCD's. They cost just a few dollars, and, since the entire LCD must be replaced if its badly scratched, it seemed sensible.

Prior to the 5D MK III, LCD's had a easily replaceable cover that is available for a few dollars. I've replaced several of those.

There is a diminishing return on performance as sensors get larger. At one time, it was said that APS-C was the largest to have any noticeable benefit.

However, as photosites get smaller, the game changes. The percentage of space taken up by the wiring gets larger, and even for FF, there is a improvement. The sensor technology is mature, so small improvements are the best we can hope for. Stacked sensors are yet another type of small improvement that were originally aimed at the cell phone cameras, we will see them move into the large sensor cameras in a couple years. The 1 inch sensors are now here. They may yield APS-C noise performance, or nearly so, so it will be interesting to see.

As sensors move to higher MP's, BSI is going to be common or even standard.

A 5DSR switched to green square mode is a much more expensive point and shoot...

At the industrial end of the camcorder market (rx10 mk2 as xc10 beater) it's common to have a 'built in' or integral lens..

The credit card companies call the shots, they publish a extensive set of requirements that sellers must follow. They have issues a common set of rules that apply Globally, no matter what country you are in. If you want to accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, AMEX, you must abide by them, and the rules require a independent verification that you are following the rules.

That's one of the reasons that I finally stopped taking credit cards last July. It had become expensive for a small business. There are indeed different procedures for Brick and Mortar, but everyone is connected to the internet now, and card data is transmitted over the internet, so the computer security is very tight (Some still don't get it).

Yes but there are some that still get around that practice...for example..I go into a restaurant to buy food, I never have anyone ask me for my billing address. When I order online some but not everyone ask for the CID...which I thought was a requirement.

Anyway, I think we can say for the fees charged, the system still is not perfect.

The billing address is optional, and a cid check is also optional. Its up to the business. PCI deals more with security of data and protecting credit card numbers. In cases where a customer I have dealt with for years places a order with just his card number, I don't bother him for the CID, I just turn the check off for him. Another thing about the address check, is that its just for the zip code. I don't know why, but that's all the card companies provide to the gateway companies for a address check. They all act as though its a check of the address, but its not. Scammers know this. I can set it to the basic 5 digit code or the zip plus 4 (US customers). When accepting International credit cards, many banks still do not have all the data online, or its unreliable, so its common to ask for a scan of some ID.

If a business is not worried about a customer, they are allowed to take the risk, but are fined for a excessive number of chargebacks. Those engaging in professional fraud are usually looking for something in high demand, cameras, lenses, video games, smart phones, anything they can resell quickly and easily.

When I've had to deal with big charges, I've actually called the card issuer and asked to validate the address I was given in the order. If it didn't match then I cancelled the order or had the customer call his card company to register his shipping address. It was huge manual PITA but it helped root out fraud. Any of these automated verifications are also suspect. Once a hacker gets into a merchant he pretty much has access to all of the resources needed.

While the manual person to person address verification was a BIG pain, it was the best way at the time. I now outsource all of that so the liability is not on me as a merchant.

Top end write/read speeds of each card type.

167MB/s = CF UDMA 7 cards
312MB/s = SDXC UHS-II cards
600MB/s = CFast 2.0 cards

As of today no Canon dedicated still camera uses SDXC UHS-II or CFast cards. Buying the SDXC UHS-II card will not improve the write/read speed of any Canon EOS camera nor will any CFast card physically fit into any Canon dedicated still camera.

Replacements for the 7D Mark II, 5D Mark III, 5DS, 5DS R, 1D C and 1D X may use SDXC UHS-II & CFast cards.

Timeline for these replacements can be as short as 6 months to 5 years from today.

By 2020 I expect 512GB CF and SDXC cards to sell for less than $100 (adjusted for inflation). SanDisk 512GB Extreme Pro UHS-I SDXC U3 Memory Card (Class 10) sells for $499.95 and Lexar 512GB CompactFlash Memory Card Professional 800x UDMA 7 for $749.95 on BHPhoto.

The only Canon cameras to use CFast cards are the C300 Mark II and XC10 announced earlier in 2015.

I have been out of the DSLR (actually SLR) scene for a while but just got back in with a 70D. I am very surprised and even shocked by how little innovation and technology has trickled into DSLR's in that time. It is after all 2015. Some of the things that drew me to the 70D was the touch screen, articulating EVF, and Wi-Fi.

Why are these things so special in a DSLR? They should be in EVERY DSLR. Heck by now should be mainstream and expected. Every smart phone and many point and shoots have these features for years. Yet in 2015 I had to spend money for a separate GPS unit for my 70D! I love the GPS and the GP-E2 is nice but come on really Canon and you want $250 for it?

Seriously guys... you know if you want/need this camera or not. Why spend time criticing random RAW samples out there? I think many of them show the real potential. But then again I don't focus on the photographers skill to nail critical focus or if the target is right for that camera. I appreciate more subtle qualities like tonality and how colors and hues are rendered in various situations.
