OPEN BOX PHOTTIX MITROS+ FLASH FOR CANON AND PHOTTIX ODIN.

Hi Mr. Surapon,

I was not that big surprised to see the lack of comments. For a lot of gear here there is immediately reaction. However when it comes to Chinese flashes and triggers, then everyone holds back.

I really want quality for my photography, never the less, it's only a hobby, I'm purely amateur. I only buy Canon lenses. I know how good they are, and they keep there value quit well.

For flashes, I really like the flashes with built-in RF remote controllers. Less battery's, less connections, so much more stable solution. I did focus myself on Yongnuo. I know there are a lot of negative reactions here on the forum concerning this brand. But I like it very much. I did buy in mean time for more then 2000$ of Yongnuo products. Everything works well except one RF603 transceiver. I never had any problems to get my products directly out of China. About a year ago I changed all my flashes to the YN568III which is a manual flash with build in RF receiver for about 75$. The YN560-TX controller, on which you can change the power output and the zoom level remotely of all the RF connected flashes makes it really a dream product. Never the less I also needed a few TTL flashes. For sure in use with big white and better beamer. The YN568EX is great, however has no external power connector. The YN565EX has an external power connector but no HSS. And compared to the YN560iii they are really missing the build in rf receiver. So a few months ago, I pulled the trigger, and did buy the YN600EX-RT in combination with the YN-E3-RT. Very good combination. In fact a copy of the famous Canon flash but a lot cheaper. I will keep both systems, as for manual use the 560iii of iv version are really unbeatable, and so easy to setup. Yongnuo is including in all the flash sets a flash diffuser cover (looks like omnibounce) nothing special, but usable.

For this reason, as I made my choice, I can't tell anything about your Phottix Odin system, but I will for sure look at it and follow your information thereabout closely. I like to know not only the products I use, but also products used by other and for sure if those others can really tell what are the positive and negative sides of these products. Products can always being improved, however every product has his price, and the flashes of Canon are to pricy, I rather like 3 flashes of Yongnuo instead of 1 Canon. But of course, that's my idea there about.

Have a nice day,
François

Canon EF 50m f1.2 L Review

Its not new and nobody says its perfect, but I needed a fast 50mm and least expected to end up ordering this lens. I felt I was taking a bit of a chance, considering various adverse comments on the web, but wow...I am enormously impressed. I wrote an initial review here (http://thephotofundamentalist.com/?p=1605) and will follow it up, but I have seen enough to realise that this is one of the few modern character lenses. It is far from perfect. It is not an ideal all-rounder IMHO, due to weight, size and cost (as well as some optical compromises), but as a 'people lens' it is absolutely phenomenal.

Looks like a lot of the harshest criticism is down to user issues like focus calibration, focus accuracy and movement (its f1.2) as well as some design compromises, but oh boy am I glad this lens is NOT one of the many perfect lenses we see nowadays. That would kill it as a portraits lens IMHO. So glad I bought one before there is a risk of a new Mk II version with 'improvements' LOL.

I am itching to use this lens for serious work. Alongside the 85 f1.2 L II... for portraits...well, what more could you want?

I will admit that I have been very frustrated by Canon's inability to produce bodies with more dynamic range, but lenses like this remind me of why I have not left the Canon stable.

The 100-400 II isn't even listed yet, that's why. You must have registered the new lens as a Mk I. It usually takes Canon a few weeks/months to add new products to the CPS list. I had to email them about the 16-35 f/4 IS to get them to add it. I bet it will be 12 pts once added.

The MkII was listed and I just double checked. It is the 4th lens on the list on the "Add" drop down list
It didn't listed when I logged in that day, but I see it now and you're right it is 8 points. I might have missed it the other day because it's out of order. I would write them to ask why the new lens isn't worth more than 8 points. They are good about email, so I'd give it a shot.

Tethering lag

After many years using DPP and EOS Utility with my 1Ds3, I have been playing with both LR5 and C1v8. I find that DDP is the fastest at 3 seconds and has the largest full screen preview. The others are around 5 seconds and I just don't care for the smaller previews. I shoot quite a bit on location and shoot tethered to a MBP and 27" Apple display, so my clients can review images. I would download their 30 day trials and see if you prefer someone else's application. At $300, I thought that Capture One would have been more flexible to configure.

How to fit your Canon 1.4X Extender to a Tamron 150-600 lens

Oh lord, so much love and support here! :o

I think what you did is very cool. And the photos look good. I would suggest you take some with and without the extender of something detailed, like a news paper at 250 feet or something and see if you are getting more detail with the 1.4X. I just googled "lens test" and found bunches of test patterns you could print and photograph.

But regardless, doing this is cool, a little experimentation is how we figure things out. And by all means let's see some cool bird photos or other cool tele pictures.

The Sonikon empire strikes back : The Nikon D7200

Marsu42 said:
Sure, but I don't think it's meant to be a 7d2 killer. Nikon is probably quite content to leave the premium and niche market to Canon while grabbing the mass market with better value, i.e. more features for the same price or the same performance for less €€€.

I'm sure there'll be pages over pages on Nikon service, oil leaks and whatnot - but imho even Canon fanbois might have to ack that Nikon is damn competitive with these crop cameras ... esp. as the 70d doesn't even run Magic Lantern too extend features and boost dynamic range.

After all, we Canon shooters should be happy for a strong competition, or the 70d would still have 9 af points and the 7d2 would have a €3000 price tag :-)

I don't think there will be pages and pages about Nikon service or anything but it's patently wrong to try and ignore those aspects of owning a DSLR. Seems to me in terms of what they are aiming at Canon, Sony and Nikon are all "competitive". Canon are just aiming for a quality approach across the whole system rather than trying to put out the best specs sheet for individual bodies.

Without Canon, the Nikons would be much more expensive so the point about competition benefiting Canon users applies equally to the Nikon users or the Sony users.

5D mark ii or 70d

Mt Spokane Photography said:
It is simply a matter of what your usage is.

The 70D had autofocus for video, while the 5D MK II has better low light response, and will give better IQ and wider angles given the same lens.

If you find that you are using telephoto lenses a lot, the 5D will appear to be much wider, so you will need a longer telephoto lens to get the same view.

Autofocus is not a issue for me, I've taken many action photos with my 5D MK II with great results.

I looked at new 70D's several times, and I wanted to like it, but it just turned me off each time.

70D af not working with 50L. As far as I am concerned.
Im stuck with live view.

No exposure compensation on Canon T6s?

lavenderia said:
I noticed that there is no AV +/- exposure compensation button on the back of the new T6s. (There is on the T6i). Will there be an easy way to use exposure compensation on the T6s that does not involve going into a menu?
I think, it is going to be like 70D. There is no EC in manual model. It comes with 2 dials. One dial is to change A or SS based on corresponding mode. EC can be set using other dial. No need of separate EC button like T6i. I really need EC in M mode which is not possible with my 70D also.

Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L Initial Impressions and Photos

Very nice photos that showcase the lens well. Thank you for posting.

But flare? I didn't notice flare problems in your images. Though you didn't have many images where that would be a problem. Other reviewers have said it's difficult to get lens flare with this lens, even if you try. Canon's special coatings, I guess.
The second Science Center image (walkway across the highway) has some lens flare, probably not very noticeable at the smaller image size. I do have shots from the same location with more pronounced lens flare. As you have pointed out; other than those couple of images at night there aren't really any other images where flares would typically have been a problem.

Welcome.

What was the thinking behind the selling the D750 for a 7D MkII?

The D750 was the last straw in a 45 year Nikon adventure. First was the D600 oil/dust issue that required a trip to Nikon. Decided to dump it - at a larger than normal loss because of the reputation of the issues - before the late and reluctant recall by Nikon. Then the D800 left focus problem & recall. Then a failed Df sensor at 300 shots. Then the D810 service advisory. So to get a nice small camera we got a D750. Got home and while charging the battery, found the serial number was subject to a recall by Nikon for a relection/light blocking issue. Took it back and left the store with the 7D2.

How has less dynamic range and fewer mp's affected your company's output/workflow?
No. Actually I prefer the Canon color rendering, especially skin tones. The dr and ISO are only noticeable to me in poor light where I have to fix in post. Auto white bal is better and the flicker control has made a difference.

Educational Videos for Interviewing

This past weekend I create 8 super short video tips for interviewing/videography.
Educational Videos for Interviewing
The videos are aimed at those doing doc/interviews with no budget - so no professional audio gear and a lackluster video cam as well. It's really just fundamentals.
Thanks for posting these good basic tutorials. Simplicity is an under-rated goal!

Possible Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Spec Talk [CR2]

I don't care about having 10 or 12 fps, that's what the 1dx is for, if I want fast shooting I'll use my 7d Mk 2
I don't care as well for high resolution camera, if the quality, DR, noise, is the same as the 7d2 (which is ok but not impressive at all).

This is why I will skip the 5ds /5dsr.

What I care for, and the reason I chose 6d over 5d3 was the better image quality AND the capability of the AF to focus at -3 EV (instead of -2EV for 5d3)

I shoot a lot of evening and night parties, and portrait with ambiant light (or whatever light I have), and my 85mm f1.2L II @ f1.2 is my secret weapon for that. I cursed the 5d2 for that, being a camera that I used a lot, i did not understand why canon underestimated the need for technology improvements in AF technology for so long. That's how i became skilled in the "switch to live view + zoom + manual focus + shoot" when the AF was unable to catch anything (which happened a lot, given the -0.5 EV AF sensitivity of 5d2)

I find the AF points of 7d2 too thick and wide, difficult to get a very precise focus with my f1.2 lenses. The 6d center point is much more precise in this area.

What is the need for super high iso or image quality if you cant focus at all...?

What I want in the 5D4, what would really make me buy it would be :

A new AF module :
-3EV able AF (or -4EV !), all cross points, ideally all compatible to f8 lenses (maybe more?) no need for 65 AF points, 20 or so is Ok if all of them are cross type, and more than one is double cross type.
I don't want to see any differences between 1600 isos and 6400 isos (the really usable max iso setting is 3200 of the 6d, and a little less of the 5d3, like 2500). Acceptable quality for portraits, or high quality printing, or fashion.
I want clean 12800 isos, clean enough to make something of the pictures (like downsized printing).
Dual card CF / SD UHS II
Antiflicker technology like on the 7d2 (great idea)
A really improved sensor with more DR (at least 1 stop more). If Canon would make a technology partnership with sony to leap for their old sensor tech, to exmor like BSI design, they would be king of the hill.
24 to 30 Mp not more
5 to 8 fps is enough
heavily tropicalized body.

What would be "nice to have"
50 to 120 fps 1080p video shooting
on sensor AF points like on the 7d2 and latest rebels, for continuous AF in movie mode.
different Movie AF algorythms (like the power focus feature on long telephotos lenses), quick, progessive, ...
Wifi/GPS (GPS is nice when traveling), I never used wifi for my 6d yet.

I don't care about 4k vids yet, but a 4k mode at 24 or 30fps would be nice for marketing purpose. 5d serie has a tradition of breaking through (first affordable FF body, First FF body that shoots video,...) The 5d3 brought nothing really new (that says a lot about canon lagging on one of the core tech of photography today : sensors...). If Canon keeps playing solo for sensor tech and/or bring nothing new that the same technology for their next sensor, they will have to include 4k for marketing.

And of course, I would like bold decisions for lenses (like the come back of f1.0 lenses!).

Too much dreaming i gess...
