Thanks, everyone, for the nice feedback. P.S. My comments regarding the USB dock were not intended to suggest that no one would like using it (I say otherwise), but rather that some users might find this "extra step" in lens ownership somewhat overwhelming.

Oh...and Dustin...THANKS sooo much for including the link for the "Show Focus Points" plug-in for Lightroom!
That is just a valuable tool to have as the only other place I could check up on myself and my camera AF at time of capture was in-camera or with the Canon image software which I rarely use, if ever. That is just so cool to have loaded in LR where I do a lot of my post processing.

My pleasure. I have found it to be a great tool to have for evaluating images...and obviously very handy for my review purposes.

I always find it interesting that LuLa falls in love with each new camera model. They are true Hardware Geeks.

Their review of the new Pentax MF camera has me wanting one :)

Hardware geeks? Camera geeks :)

And why shouldn't one fall in love with each new model?

It's just a pity we don't get to do that when it comes to our partners ;)

Maybe Photography Geeks?

Do the words matter so much? Michael has a nice article about his recent foray into astrophotography, along with not only the camera but the mount used to point it and track stars and planets.

I like to read about his latest and greatest, and then 3 months later, when a clarification that points out why he has changed his mind, or some serious drawbacks.

Enthusiasm is catching.

R.I.P Metz Speedlites.

I never bought third party strobes for Canon. Price difference for Metz strobes vs. Canon speedlites was not good enough for me to take any compatibility risks with reverse engineered third party gear. ETTL II in itself is complicated and finicky enough to avoid any additional source of problems.

Actually, afaik metz (and nissin) don't reverse engineer but licence the ettl protocol from canon which would be a reason they are more expensive as well.

As for Chinese labour, it is now getting expensive to produce over there. I know of several smaller manufacturers in the outdoor industry that are thinking of moving their production back to Europe. It would cost virtually the same but cut lead time by months. In the coming years I expect a lot of production to start shifting to south America and the stable bits of Africa like SA.

Hello Hannes!

Please be a little bit more careful when inserting a quote.
Surely not on purpose, but you made a quote from AvTvM and by erasing the wrong lines made it a statement said by me, which is definetly wrong and in other cases can cause trouble for me and others.

Thank you very much, hannes, to be aware of this in the future.

Yours,
Maximilian

PS.: It'll be best to use the preview function to check, if it's okay.

Sorry about that, was doing the posting on a phone which is bloody difficult if you need to do anything more than just type a straight up response. I've fixed my post.

70-200 2.8 is ii vs new 100-400

No one has to read any thread, and it their choice to ignore the obvious, but sometimes you feel people should consult the topics list first before repeating the well covered topics.

With this kind of attitude, you'll get frantic around here :-p ... best practice is never to use the search box and start a "17-40L vs 16-35L" thread every full hour.

Most important, if you've got a question cross-post it to every photog forum on the internet, let lots of people try to give advice, and never get back to it ... which reminds me I didn't want to reply to 1st poster's posts anymore :-\ ... which doesn't mean this op won't respond, ymmv.

100-400 II and 135 f2 L to Replace my 70-200 2.8 IS II (+ remaining kit shuffle)

I'd keep the 70-200, add the 17-85, and get the 100-400. On a crop body, the 85 and the 135 both fit comfortably in the 70-200 range. I'd look to buy either of the other lenses if after living with the first three for a while and see where the "holes" are in your style of shooting. Then I'd buy a very big bag with a very strong shoulder strap and consider buying a gym membership if you don't already have one.

Canon 5DIV: 36 MP US $ 3799 TBA in March 2015

That page(source) is as old as the road to Rome.

However, looking at the c100 mark II (1080/59 for only $5600) released a month ago i can pretty much confirm the 5d mark iv will not have 4k for a lower price. Canon is very pro- product diversification so they like to keep cool features out even When it is technicly possible.. Its a shame tho, nobody will get a canon now for video... Buying a full HD camera for 3700 dollars when 4k televisions are flooding the market is just silly. You will be instantly 3 years behind

Add 600 dollars more and you have the Sony fdr-ax1 with 4k.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. They have to design the camera for a 3 year life span, and leaving 4K out will render it obsolete much sooner, remember, the 5D has served as their unofficial flagship video DSLR. Leaving 4K out will mean giving up that market share. IMO any high end camera released with HD only video is a short term stopgap product that intended to buy them some more development time, and can be expected to be replaced by an upgraded version on a much shorter cycle than 3 years. Most likely such a camera would be replaced by a new version within 12-18 months.

Canon have had more than enough time to get their 4K ducks in a row by now so I think it is unlikely that they would produce a HD only 5D4, if they did we can expect to see a 5D5 follow on relatively quickly.

They could always release a 4k firmware update couple of years later to extend the life of 5D4 as long as the hardware supports it.
The same way as they added DPAF to the C100 via paid firmware update.

First time shooting a wedding...

From the images you have uploaded so far, I'm impressed. It's not easy pulling off an outdoor backlit scene like that. And the 2nd shot with the bridesmaid on the left, that gives the whole shot a great dose of color!

From what I can tell, it appears that it was a pretty informal and casual wedding. That doesn't make it any easier to shoot, maybe even harder, but I think that might help a little with the stress since there isn't as much formal 'hoopla'.

I agree that I would NOT want to make a living doing weddings but the occasional casual wedding is a nice change of pace if everyone is laid back and not divas. Plus, there's always the free food and drinks once you got 90% of the shots. :)

The key to good sports photography is cropping. There is very rarely a shot produced by a professional sports photographer that can not benefit from cropping.
+1
I looked at your basketball shots and they are all horizontal and environmental. Try to shoot more often vertical and very, very tightly, cropped. It looks like your lens is too short.

Good luck!
If I had only the same chance you have when I was 17!

7DII w/300+1.4 vs 5DIII w/300+2.0 comparison

krisbell said:
Thanks Neuro - yes ideally a comparison with 300II. I have no reason to doubt you but have you seen any review or site that has actual examples so I can see with my own peepers what sort of difference we are talking about?

I haven't, and I doubt we will. Best option may be to rent/borrow a 7DII and 1.4xIII and try it yourself.

If this can be done with a 1.6x crop sensor, then the next generation of full frame cameras with 2.5x the sensor area should mute the critics, at least for a short while.

Fat chance. ;)

7D Mk2 vs 5D Mk3 Interesting Video Review.

Yiannis A - Greece said:
I know this kind of stuff between these two models is something all of us are expecting to see online so, i hereby paste a link to it.

Correct/Updated link on the very bottom (literally). Unfortunately, these specs reciting yt reviews are never "in depth" even if they say though. The author claims that the crop 7d2 and ff 5d3 show little difference in overall image quality (7d2 up in video, 5d3 in low light) which imho is misleading unless your name is Ken Rockwell.

But what can you expect from a yt guy comparing smartphones, gaming consoles, watches, computers, monitors, ...? If you want review, read this: www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EOS-7D-Mark-II.aspx

70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM - Loud noise from IS

Mitch.Conner said:
Mt Spokane Photography said:
The only IS noise I hear is from my 300mm f/4L It clunks so loudly that I can feel it. That doesn't mean that others are quite, my hearing is poor at best.

That sounds exactly like what a Canon technical service rep was describing as what you'd hear and feel if there was a problem that needed to be looked at.

You sure it's ok?

The 300mm f/4L has a early IS system, and is well known for the clunk when IS engages. It is pretty loud, but there is no problem with the lens.

Switching to Full Frame

wtlloyd said:
Judging by your statements, you don't have particularly deep pockets. For this reason alone I wouldn't consider anyone but Canon.
A Pro has business needs completely different than an enthusiasts. Canon has a range of bodies and glass that far outstrips all competitors, allowing you to assemble a main kit AND a lessor but crucial secondary kit that will function as backup.

No other manufacturer compares in support and service to Canon. Can you afford to replace a broken camera or lens out of pocket on short notice so as to not miss a shoot? Nikon has a downright lousy reputation for their repair service, Canon are stellar in this regard and often generous in their warranty repair. Nikon isn't alone in mediocre performance, no one is in the same ballpark as Canon.
Join CPS, get a 2 day turnaround on your repairs, and never look back.

Totally agree with wtlloyd! Great points!

Pros are (or should be if they're smart) much more frugal and pragmatic with their equipment purchases. The gear needs to be sufficient to satisfy the needs of the business and nothing more. (Where enthusiasts buy stuff because the want it, a pro buys only what they truly need.) Running a business is more about the balance sheet, not about the photographer. The photographer (whether it's you or an employee) is merely part of the business mechanism. The business of photography is more about marketing, sales, customer service/services offered and reputation. No one cares about the camera gear except the person holding it. And every item purchased, even if it's just a memory card, takes away from the profit of the business.

Good luck with your upcoming business venture! Just please realize it's a long, hard, slow process to profitability.

Canon 6D - RAW and stabilizer test

Walkramis said:
Hope you enjoy it, and please leave a comment or critique if you do since I am pretty novice at both editing and grading :)

Congrats on getting that working, shooting raw with the 6d is a pita not only because of the cropped picture, but because of the slow sd card interface. Unfortunately, this makes all 6d sample raw videos I saw look kind of similar - a succession of short clips with ambient music. Did you shoot .raw or .mlv?

As to the grading: I don't do video and don't like like over-grading, but probably fancying heavy post ops comes with playing around with the software. To /me as a simple viewer, this looks like the tint is off. It could be my monitor, but the greys look magenta - or is this a desired artistic effect?
