Lens as a gift. Non Photographer buying... :)

The links still show up for me. But I don't click links much. I hover over them first and usually I'm not remotely interested in the destination. As far as I'm concerned, I figure if CR is getting paid, no big deal. Heck, I barely even noticed them until the comment brought them up. The CR site works pretty well and it's not free to host. In the end, we all win since this site benefits us all. If one doesn't like the link, ignore it and don't click on it. I think most of us know it's par for the course these days anyway and don't assume the poster went to all the trouble to link to a non related site. ;)

Capturing Still from Video, best practice?

All-I might better if it's important to capture stills from your footage.

With IPB compression the camera compare frames and throw away information.

For example: You have a person talking to the camera with a background which doesn't change. Then it doesn't need to save all the information from background portion of the footage, since it doesn't change. With All-I compression every frame is saved in its entirety, so you have 25 complete frames per second to choose from, but it needs a lot more storage space.

Godox AD180 / 360 rebranding

Viggo said:
I bought the Y-cable that lets you use both outlets and by that half the recycle time. I think it's 2.25s with the ad360 with full power, I never wait for it. I use it a lot at 1/16 power and keeps up with 9 fps.
I have two Godox branded AD 360's. Viggo is right...get the Y cable. Recycle time is QUICK! Make sure to get the protective covers that really should be included in the kit. http://cameraflashaccs.com/products/bulb-protective-cover-witstro/ Check around on eBay and you'll find them for just a few dollars.

I get very successful high speed sync using the extraordinary Phottix Odin triggers. Godox may have HSS capable triggers by now, no doubt cheaper than the Odins. Worth having in your AD360 kit.

My understanding is there is no difference at all between the rebranded AD180/360's. There may be differences in warranty offers. Mine have two years. Godox is a company that has no problem at all distributing to resellers who choose to re-brand. This may change at some point in the future as the Godox brand becomes more internationally recognized and mainstream.

Critical View of 70-200 f/2.8 mkii+2xTC III

and if i was hiding the bird would be closer to me

"Birding" is indeed a bit like being lucky at hide and seek, and that's one problem: You can take an "ok" shot with your mighty expensive gear, and then the next guy with a Rebel kit lens happens to walk up right next to the bird, taking a better shot...

but if i didn't have 1/2000 he would be blurry.

... and that's the other problem: Even if you have a tracking camera (I wouldn't even bother with my 6d), "sitting duck" in lower light has an *entirely* different iso requirement than "in flight". With IS on and snapping a few frames, you can high iq shots w/o movement. When something starts moving at higher speed, you indeed need 1/1500 (horses) or at least 1/2000 (bif), and the iso value goes through the roof.

Yeah and 1/2000 is only the starting point >:( , at least with better light the pictures are not bad, until i get a dream lens

260mm 1/2000 f/5.6 ISO 1000, cropped and processed

It's just gone 8.30 am here now and their online phone line will be open .. time to explain to someone there now.

OK.

The topic was about Canon direct in the USA, I didn't think you were discussing the same thing.

Sony revolutionizes the sensor world? Active Pixel Color Sampling sensor (APCS).

Some more information on this:

The commentators still seem to think it's a hoax, given the discrepancies and errors in all of the data. Take it for what you will.

I just...thought I'd quote this, maybe make it stand out more. So far, guys with WAAY more knowledge than any of us here regarding sensor technology think the whole thing is a cleverly deployed hoax. It could be real...but, these guys usually don't claim hoax unless there is something really wrong with the information... :P

The entire concept seems infeasible at first glance. Among other things, it trades a spatial shift between colors for a temporal shift, which is probably very undesirable....

Sony making another DR leap? Some 21 stops in a 1.5" sensor?

Bummer they are using a 16bit ADC...I guess with S-LOG they are basically shifting the shadow tones up in-camera, so in some ways they could be benefiting from that 21 stops...which is fine for video. For stills, they should really be using a 20-bit ADC. I guess we'll see if they stick this sensor in a stills body or not, but if they do...I certainly hope it would use 20-bit ADC.

Ideally, a 21-bit ADC, to be pedantic.

Indeed. :P

Upgrade current body or wait?

By today's prices, 6D is a bargain, but requires lenses with decent sharpness at the image edges.
So do yourself a favor to yourself and get rid of the terrible 75-300mm. The bad news is that there is no substitute for Canon under $ 500. Tamron 70-300mm VC, seems to me the best value for money.

IMO, if you're used to a crop body, you're not going to like such a big loss of reach if you stick with the same focus range. You'd be going from 480mm equivalent to 300mm. That's very noticeable, to such a degree that I almost never take the 1.4x teleconverter off my 70–300L these days.

With my 70–300L, I can tolerate the IQ loss from that 1.4x TC, but even with that combination, I'm seriously considering moving to something longer. I've mainly been waiting for Canon to ship the new version of the 100–400L so I wouldn't be buying a 16-year-old lens design. If you're going to upgrade the 75-300, my advice would be to save your money until you can upgrade it to something with a longer focal length like the 100–400L II or Sigma's 150–600 (if you can deal with its huge size). For now, just get yourself a cheap Kenko 1.4x and swear at it.

What mechanics for a America DJ 200w 5R moving head light?

Can anybody please recommend a good quality and decent stage light for events at a reasonable price?

I need a new moving head light. I don't like wash light , so something on a stand is what I aim for.
It must be able to smooth scanning, horizontal scan 540 degrees, 260 degrees vertical scanning.

I originally bought two RGBW LED Beam Light Fixtures, but Some do not work right out of the box, and

others have issues after very little time or use. :)

Review: Canon MR-14EX II Macro Ring Flash

I have a 50 macro, and I'm planning to buy a 100L as soon as funds allow. Should I be tempted by this as both a macro flash, and also for use as a standard (albeit low powered) flash to save me buying another?
Buy a conventional flash, you can use it with a diffusing screen for macro work, and it'll be much more useful for other stuff than a ringflash would be. Other comments about lack of power apply here.

The review you've linked to in my view is poor. Awful. I have the camera, lens and flash they've used and could have written a much better review. The writing style's dreadful, for a start, and their repeated statement that the flash would have given better results with a better lens is nonsense - the 60mm efs lens they used is superb, optically comparable to the 100mm L.

In my view you can do without a ringflash but you can't do without a conventional speedlite such as the 430EXII.

Using filters from a video camera with the 5DM3?

Yes, you can. All you would need is a square 4" filter holder and the respective lens adapter(s) for it.
I use a Formatt-Hitech filter holder that can be adjusted to take filters up to 4mm thick.
I'm sure the other major manufacturers such as Lee, Singh-Ray, and Cokin (Z Series) all make filter holders that will suit your purpose, too - you'd just have to check they can take the thicker filters.
